Wayman Tisdale, the Tulsa native who met greatness at Booker T. Washington and the University of Oklahoma, was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame posthumously Sunday night. Tisdale, who died of cancer at the age of 44 last May, was represented by his widow, Regina Tisdale.

"One of the best things for me is that he was aware of this," Regina Tisdale said. "He was excited, called a few people after he found out and told people, 'We're going with a pretty good class.'"

Among Tisdale's fellow inductees were Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Others who attended the ceremony in Kansas City included Tommy Tubbs, the son of Tisdale's coach at OU Billy Tubbs, and current Sooners coach Jeff Capel.

"It's an outstanding honor, one that's well-deserved," Capel said. "Obviously we wish he was here to be able to receive it in person. But his family will be there and his spirit will be there. Wayman has meant so much to college basketball, not just to our university but college basketball in general. This is one of the highest honors you can get, and it's well-deserved for all of the contributions he's given to the game of basketball."

This year's OU team honors Tisdale's memory with a patch on the front of their jerseys. It includes his No. 23 and his signature.

Tisdale is the Sooners' all-time leading scorer with 2,661 points. He also holds OU's single-game and season scoring records. A three-time All-American, Tisdale also played for the gold medal-winning 1984 U.S. Olympic Team.

He was the No. 2 overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft, and went on to average 15 points over 12 pro seasons. Upon retiring from basketball, Tisdale launched a career as a jazz guitarist that became just as successful.

Tisdale was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame Nov. 12. Others inducted into the basketball hall Sunday were former Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote, former UCLA, Memphis and UAB coach Gene Bartow, former NCAA executive director Walter Byers, 4,000-point scorer Travis Grant and USA Basketball executive Bill Wall.
