Kinne gears up for Oklahoma

Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne, a Texas transfer, was recruited by OU while in high school. "I'm ready to go out and show them what I've got," he said. Patrick Semansky / Associated Press

Tulsa's G.J. Kinne is familiar with the Oklahoma Sooners.

As a high school senior, Oklahoma and many of college football's heavyweights showed interest in the dual-threat quarterback.

On Saturday, Kinne will get a chance to play OU.

"I know a lot of their coaches," Kinne said following Saturday night's 44-10 victory at New Mexico. "I was pretty heavily recruited by them. I'm ready to go out and show them what I've got."

Kinne could have had a first taste of the Sooners in a different venue.

The quarterback began his college career at Texas, but he transferred to Tulsa two seasons ago in search of playing time.

This game is not going to be in the Cotton Bowl, where half the stadium would have been rooting for him.

He'll enter a hostile environment in Norman, where 80,000 strong will be cheering against a quarterback making only his third start.

"It's going to be a big one," Kinne said.

Kinne has completed 37-of-55 passes for 521 yards and five touchdowns. He hasn't thrown an interception, which isn't unusual after he had a 47-to-1 touchdown-interception ratio in his senior season at Gilmer High School.

The sophomore quarterback also leads Tulsa in rushing and is averaging 65 yards per game.

For Tulsa to have a chance, it will have to protect Kinne from the Sooners' strong defensive line. It will also have to open holes in the run game to keep OU off-balance.

Kinne has shown the ability to make plays on the run. He's bought time to set up long passes (he hit six different receivers for gains of 21 yards or more against New Mexico) and had a 45-yard run against Tulane.

What does the Hurricane have to do to find success against a defense that racked up 17 tackles for loss against Idaho State?

"We just have to go out and execute our offense," Kinne said.

"If we do that, it will turn out good for us."

I sincerly hope that if G.J. can not execute the most effective weapon in the TU Offensive play book (the downfield forward pass)then Todd inserts Jacob Bower early in the game to keep pace. In fact it may be a wise choice to platoon G.J. and Jacob in alturnating quarters to keep the Sooners off pace. Coach Patterson and his Defensive Staff need to earn their money this week and come up with something to defend the passes to the 'flats' and corner routes.

GD, your idea stinks. Alternating QBs works when the starter sucks. Kinne is more than capable of leading Tulsa to a victory. It's upset time because TU's defense forces Landry Jones to three interceptions...

Being in Tokyo it must be legal to smoke that stuff, because Rhymeister always sounds like he is smoking something.

This is a great game for both universities and the state of Oklahoma. This is Tulsa's best year to pull off the upset. I look for a tough game just like the last time Tulsa went to Norman. I still think the Sooners have enough speed on defense to slow down Tulsa.

Both offensive lines will have trouble protecting their QBs. OU's d-line is nasty and I believe Tu has 10 sacks in the first two games. The game will be decided up front because either QB is capable if they get protection.

This will be a great game and I love both teams. I hope TU can pull it off though.

Nobody knows which OU team will show up. TU is more than capable of beating this team if OU plays like it did against BYU. Looking forward to a great game.

I'm a die-hard Tulsa fan, but we need to get real here. Yes, Tulsa COULD pull off the upset, because anybody can beat anybody. But it isn't likely. OU lost to a VERY good BYU team. Tulsa and BYU have a common opponent: Tulane. Just take a look at the box scores from those two games. Tulsa had trouble stopping Tulane, and gave up a ton of yards. BYU had no such difficulty. They destroyed Tulane, and could have scored 75 on them had they wanted. I hope we catch OU on a bad day, but that's what it would take to beat them: our best, and their worst.

Rhymeister- Given I have seen the team upclose at practice and in both of the games whereby I believe by your location has you at a disadvantage not to have seen anything post internet, blogs and clip video you may want to consider my observations that G.J. and Jacob have different skill sets and that for OUR TEAM to be successfull, Todd needs to employ both QB's talents.

you are an idiot golden driller1 you dont alternate qb's when you the best qb in the nation in kinne, hes been doing this for years. so what bower can run better i bet he can throw int's better as well. IF IT AINT BRKE DONT FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

GoldenDriller1 must think GJ does not have the ability to throw it deep. I have watched him play for years and believe me he has a cannon for an arm. He has been sacked 7 times in the first two games. Given more time, you would see that power.
What GJ has done so far is show his amazing athletic ability to avoid more sacks. He does something few QBs can and that is throw back accross the field while on the run in the opposite direction. That takes real talent. I have seen both games this year and GJ'S performance has been remarkable. No one and I mean no could have done better.

My comments were not meant to take anything a way from Jacob Bower. He threw a perfect strike to Slick in the end zone against New Mexico. It was beautiful.

Oops! I meant a pass to Trae Johnson not Slick. Sorry Trae

I, too, have seen Kinne play in dozens of games, and he definitely has what it takes - give him protection and watch what he can do -fast feet and quick thinking along with incredible passing skills - he has the ability to throw it deep or run it - Go, Tulsa - God bless you with a safe game

hornhater2, yes, i have all of my teeth and nope, have never smoked anything illegal. You just don't like it when someone disses your Land Grabbers team. You'll see at the end of the season when you end up 9-3 or 8-4, they're not that good this season.
