Tulsa's torture chamber
Hurricane has lost its last two games at UTEP.

TU coach Todd Graham, yelling during last week's loss to Boise State, says he has never experienced an easy game at the Sun Bowl, home of UTEP. STEPHEN HOLMAN/Tulsa World

EL PASO, Texas — Sun Bowl Stadium can be a tortuous place for opposing college football teams.

UTEP's rowdy fans can make life miserable. Their cheers echo off the mountains that surround the historic venue.

Tulsa knows all about this house of horrors. The Golden Hurricane's last two visits ended with losses in the final minute.

George Clinkscale, a fifth-year senior linebacker, has played in both those nail-biting defeats.

"We had some tough losses and turned the ball over in both of those games," Clinkscale said. "You can't do that in front of that crowd.

"Once they get the crowd into the game, they become a monster."

The calendar hasn't hit November, but Wednesday's 7 p.m. ESPN contest in El Paso could have long-lasting Conference USA implications. Both Tulsa and UTEP can maintain control of their destinies with a victory.

History has proven that winning at UTEP won't be easy for Tulsa.

The Miners captured a 2005 victory when Reagan Schneider hit a 23-yard field goal with six seconds left to boost UTEP to a 41-38 victory. In 2007, the Miners won 48-47 when quarterback Trevor Vittatoe hit Joe West with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 57 seconds remaining and a last-second TU field goal was wide.

"I look at those games and I talk to the kids about them because those experiences are important," TU coach Todd Graham said. "There have been some epic games there. The one in 2005 was heart-wrenching and the one in 2007 was the same.

"I've
never been there with it being an easy deal."

UTEP coach Mike Price was asked about his memories of the two matchups.

"It was exciting football at its best," Price said. "The games were just so close and so hard fought and so fun when you're on the end of them like we were."

Houston took a No. 12 ranking into the Sun Bowl earlier this month. It left west Texas with a humbling 58-41 loss.

"Obviously we didn't do very well there," Houston coach Kevin Sumlin said on Monday. "We caught an extremely fired up UTEP team that was celebrating their homecoming.

"They'll be fired up to play on TV and, in a midweek game, you're going to get their best."

One reason that UTEP may be energized for TU — UTEP's players haven't forgotten the 77 points that the Hurricane posted on them in a 2008 blowout.

"When we went to Tulsa last year, we really embarrassed ourselves," Price said about the 77-35 loss. "The players remember that game and want to redeem themselves.

"They killed us last year. The defense did on outside blitzes and the offense did in their executing."

Graham has been preaching to his team how tough this challenge will be. He also reminded his team that the last time UTEP played on its home field, it pulled off the Houston upset.

"They came out and played their best game of the year," Graham said. "That's what they do at home.

"Houston is one of the best teams in the country. That showed us that you better get prepared to play and you'd better play well.""When we went to Tulsa last year, we really embarrassed ourselves."

Show me a coach who hasn't yelled like that, GoldenDriller.

GO TU!

I think their homefield advantage has been overhyped. Buffalo's only win of the season was @ UTEP. They just like to use the Houston game as a scare tactic and the TW uses any story it can find to make a joke team like UTEP look half decent.

UTEP is 1-2 @ home! Their stadium has been about half empty for most games! It is hardly a tough place to play unless you just give them the game like Houston did.
GO TU!!!

Remember how tough it was supposed to be to play @ UNM?
It can be tough there, sure, but TU is a solid team, and crowd noise shouldn't stop them from performing. It certainly doesn't affect defense much, and so far TU's defense is the best thing about TU this year.

Laughoutlound...conference games are different, simply said. You can be 0-4 in non-conference games, yet when conference games start, you have the same chance as the team lining up across from you to win the game and conference.

TU needs to come to play...they need to run the football and stop Buckram. If TU can do that, they will be fine. O-line needs to BLOCK SOMEBODY!

Having played there, I can tell you they always have a big crowd even when their bad. The crowd is always into it and it's a difficult place to play. That being said, UTEP is not very good and if TU is any kind of a team, they should go in there and win. If you don't play well, you'll get beat. If you play well, you should win. The crowd won't be a factor if you don't let them be.

BLA, I know that. UTEP is 1-1 in conference. TU knows this game is critical. That doesn't take away from reality: UTEP is 1-2 at home this year. Most of the TU players which beat UTEP 77-35 last year are back. Home field won't give UTEP THAT much of an advantage.

Yes, "on any given day", "they beat Houston", etc etc... I agree with hawkdaddy "if TU is any kind of a team, they should go in there and win."

TU is NOT Houston. Houston's D is not even close to TU's and thats the key to winning on the road. TU has allowed only 1.6 points per game in the 4th quarter! If they played that well in every quarter, they'd be #1 scoring D in the country.
Their D is not only mean, they also play very well down the stretch. Last year TU was a 2nd-half team. This year, TU is a first and 4th quarter team which bodes well for most games.

Houston gave up twice as many points in the 4th quarter vs UTEP than TU has given up in the 4th quarter all year long!

Besides the Houston game, UTEP's RB averages 71 yards per game... hardly impressive considering no one else on the team has more than 70 yards all season. Its not like Tulsa where 4 or 5 guys share the carries.

Again, exclude Houston and UTEP averages 86 rushing yards per game.

Houston is ranked right around 119th in nearly every major defensive category. Yes, they played OSU & TT, but UTEP, Tulane and Miss St all had as many yards or more yards than OSU & TT! Houston is lucky Tulane can't score. They racked up 430 yards and drove down the field 6-7 times and only came away with 16 points.

Sick of hearing about the the O-Line - at the Boise State game Kinne had lots of time to throw the ball but didn't. Maybe he is so used to scrambling that he just scrambles and don't look for his recievers on both sides. This is killing TU - He needs to trust his receivers and running backs. His receivers have so much talent that if he even throws the ball in any of their direction most likely they will catch it. Please throw the ball Kinne. If everyone steps up and play their positions TU will not have a problem beating UTEP. Thank God for Defense because they have been all been playing their "A" game. GO TU - Beat UTEP like you did last year.
