Miner issues for TU
UTEP deals Tulsa more heartache with late TD

Tulsa running back Charles Clay is brought down by UTEP defenders Wednesday in El Paso, Texas. Victor Calzada/For the Tulsa World

Correction: A Thursday Tulsa World Sports story incorrectly reported the college football record for Texas-El Paso. UTEP is 3-4 overall and 2-1 in Conference USA games after a win Wednesday night over Tulsa. This story has been corrected.

EL PASO, Texas — Halloween came a few days early for Tulsa football.

The El Paso nightmare continued for the Golden Hurricane on Wednesday night, as UTEP rallied for a 28-24 win over TU in the Conference USA game's final minute.

Donald Buckram's 3-yard touchdown run with 28 seconds remaining lifted the Miners to the win. It completed Tulsa's third straight trip to Sun Bowl Stadium that has ended with a league loss in the final minute.

"It's very disappointing," TU coach Todd Graham said. "It seems like every time we come out here, it's very difficult. Give UTEP credit. They wanted it more tonight. They outplayed us and outcoached us."

In 2005, a UTEP field goal with two seconds left gave the home team a 41-38 win. In 2007, Trevor Vittatoe's touchdown pass with 58 seconds remaining helped the Miners grab a 48-47 win.

This time, Buckram did the heavy lifting. The junior had 72 of his game-high 165 rushing yards on the final two scoring drives to erase Tulsa's 24-13 lead.

Buckram capped both possessions with scoring runs, the first two rushing touchdowns allowed by TU's defense this season.

"The biggest thing was once we took that (two-score lead) we started to decline a bit," TU defensive
end Cory Dorris said. "We need to keep rising that was the problem, we weren't playing passionately like we always do.

"We weren't playing Tulsa defense or Tulsa offense like we do. We weren't playing Tulsa football."

Things looked bright for TU after quarterback G.J. Kinne scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 12:37 remaining to make it 24-13. Momentum seemed squarely on the Hurricane's side.

But UTEP — which had struggled offensively since scoring 13 first-quarter points — came to life.

Buckram was a battering ram. He made it 24-19 when he scored on an 8-yard run with 6:25 left. A two-point conversion pass changed the score to 24-21.

After Tulsa went three-and-out following consecutive run plays, the Miners completed their rally.

"We let the crowd get into it," Graham said, pointing toward the 37,368 fans. "We had our chances. We had a two-score lead ... and then it went to one score. We got the ball back.

"You have to drive the field and we went three-and-out."

There were plenty of "could'ves" and "should'ves" during the final moments.

Tulsa (4-3 overall, 2-1 in C-USA) had a chance to stop UTEP on fourth-and-3 on the Miners' next-to-last scoring drive. But Vittatoe hit Buckram with a 4-yard pass to move the chains to the TU 8.

On the first play of UTEP's game-winning series, TU's John Destin jumped an out route and let an interception and possible touchdown slip through his hands.

The Tulsa offense also never got on track after Kinne's TD run. It didn't have a first down and gained 6 total yards on its final three possessions.

UTEP (3-4, 2-1) scored the game's first 13 points. Each of its first three series included one pass play that covered at least 24 yards, including Vittatoe's 80-yard scoring strike to Donavon Kemp.

"We just gave up too many yards and too many big plays in the secondary," Graham said.

Tulsa captured a 14-13 lead with 5:44 remaining in the third quarter when Charles Clay plunged in from a yard out. Clay, who has battled injuries all season, rushed for a season-high 84 rushing yards on 16 carries. He added 74 receiving yards.

UTEP led 13-7 at intermission, but it could have been worse for the Hurricane.

TU's Dexter McCoil had an interception in the end zone, and Destin picked off a Vittatoe pass at the Tulsa 4 on back-to-back drives.

UTEP entered the game with four sacks all season. It recorded five against the Hurricane.

"It's a big pill to swallow," Clay said. "We played a hungry team today and a team that wanted it more. We have to go back to the drawing board and improve some things."

Too late. We lost. Lousy, lousy offensive play calling for 3 quarters and 3 man defensive line rush does nothing but allow QB time to find a receiver. I'll go to SMU Homecoming game and that's it. No more of my time with this worthless offensive co-ordinator.

Todd Graham will learn that delegation is the key to victory. Give up play calling, that was a total disgrace to a very mickey mouse team.

It got to the point in the game where I could call the offensive plays Tulsa was going to run.

Your coaching sucks when it comes to how to win a game.....you gave it way with your conservative play calling and lack of imagination. UTEP is a terrible team and you played to their weakness.

Go get an offensive coordinator and stop trying to be everything to everbody.

Houston and SMU will eat you alive.

The more I think about it, Tulsa's offense was flat.

That was s totally let-down in terms of offensive effort and coaching.

UTEP............you have got to be kidding.

Two words for this loss: Herb Hand.
Three more words: Not Gus Malzhan.

TU was up three with the ball late in the game. On 3rd and 2 UTEP puts 8 in the box, daring TU to pass, or go wide. They knew TU had been having success running Clay in the middle. EVERYONE knew that was what Hand was going to do. And he obliged them by running Clay up the middle for no gain. TU punts, UTEP scores, we lose, end of story.

Thanks for nothing Herbie...try mixing it up a little next time. You get too fixated on a play that is "working". You can't keep going to the same well.

We should have won, even with a lousy first quarter (and part of the second).

Dang it, OU and TU both blowing chunks this year...now I have to root for OSU.

As someone who has watched football for both a living and entertainment, I have to say this game was not lost on the field, it was lost on the sideline. After every loss, Todd Graham says the team played hard, but "we were out-coached." I used to think that was his way of shouldering the blame so the players would keep their heads up. Now I believe he is flat-out telling the truth. If TU is consistently out coached, why not fix it by getting coaches who can do the out-coaching? We know Graham looked for leadership qualities when he picked a quarterback. Now it's time for Graham to show leadership qualities and start handing out pink slips -- college roommates and all. He owes it to the kids. It doesn't matter that the highly ranked Houston Cougars got their helmets handed to them at UTEP. For Tulsa, this one was an embarrassment.

I agree with all the comments but we definitely have to make some serious changes and NOW. I am not sure why Graham waited until the last two plays to use Trae Johnson on the final plays while he was triple-man covered. I can not believe TU lost this game. Once again I agree with Graham that coaching was the reason they lost. I will not say that the offensive-coordinator needs to be replaced because he does not get to call his own plays. Can't believe Graham would even brag about giving Demarious Johnson the ball 25 times, come on now they don't even do that in the NFL. TU deserved to lose this game and if they keep it up they will lose their fan base that took so long to come back.

2nd and 2 at UTEP 44 Team pass incomplete.
3rd and 2 at UTEP 44 G.J. Kinne pass incomplete to Damaris Johnson.
3rd and 1 at TLSA 26 G.J. Kinne pass incomplete to Slick Shelley.

These three plays bothered me because prior to these plays they were running great. I know there were a ton of plays that could have turned this game on offense or defense, but with these stats:
Team Rushing 45 for 203 4.5 avg. 3 TDs.

Come on TU, after the Boise State game, MAJOR step backwards....

With Kinne, Clay and (insert other RB here), TU should be able to run the option (wishbone, veer, I formation...whatever!) and gain 2 freaking yards when they need to!

Dang, they looked like OU running into the middle for no gain.

and even though I think they should have ran on the plays I mentioned above, on the second to last 4th quarter drive you guys are right, that up the middle run call was weak!! oh well you live and you learn (hopefully)

Crap! Somuchforhisbeingagood defensive team! Can't rush passer, can't stop the pass, Can't stopa sure fire run on last UTEP TD! Even sitting home watching,I knew who was going to carry the ball1 Also, GJ not elusive enough in pocket, sack, sack, sack! Let's see what Bower can do! Also, since Beaver picked up 1stdown, why not use him some more? He wouldn't stand still and get sacked every time! Was going to go to homecoming, but why waste the money to see SMU throw the ball at will! Why does it take so long to get a play called? So much for the hurry up nohuddle offense! Last few years under Gus, plays were fast and the offense wore out the defense! Get a play called even if it doesn't work! Bring back Gus and recruit O and D linemen!

with 6 minutes left in the game TU got too conservative and ran the ball 3 times and punted. We see this all to often in games nowadays. Coaches are afraid to stay aggressive in that situation. The coaches that do stay aggressive are the ones coaching championship teams.

I'm not sure who's worse at their job. GJ Kinne at quarterback or Graham as head coach. They are both absolutely worthless. Kinne is the 3rd best qb on the roster. Bench "your boy" Graham. Dan Hawkins at Colorado benched his own flesh and blood and they won the next week. Sticking with GJ Kinne will cost Graham his job.

That O-line is worse than OUs and OUs is pretty bad. Allowed 5 sacks to a team that had 5 sacks all season??? I still have hopes for this team, but I think if they keep it like it is this team will end up 6-6. I'm also tired of getting up at 1 AM to watch the game during the middle of the week just to watch them lose the game in the last min. Get it together TU!!

Don't blame Herb Hand. If you know anything about TU, you know who calls everything! When things fail, he turns around and blames it on people who had absolutely no input. It takes a special man to work for graham.

Herb Hand did not call the plays on the critical junctures, Graham did the play calling. Graham's expertise is (at best) on the Defense. The team looked bad for 3 quaters. UTEP could have beat TU by 20 if their recievers caught the ball, dropped about 8 balls throughtout the game. The team has become a dictatorship with Graham trying to control everything - when last year, Gus would not let that happen to at least the Offensive play calling. Folks, we need to face the facts. TU is not a very good team this year, with a High School QB who had not played in 3 years, a weak O line, a thin secondary and a dominating Head Coach who yells "do not worry - we are not sinking" isn't that is what they said on the Titanic.

Tulsa just let this one go. Plain and simple. Defense let them roll over them to late in the game. They have a lot of bigger teams to play still so they better get their act together if they are going to pull this season together.
