TU hits court for exhibition
Wojcik expects his team to treat it like a regular-season game.

Tulsa basketball gets one dress rehearsal before the regular season begins later this week.

The Golden Hurricane will play its lone exhibition game when it hosts Southern Nazarene on Monday. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Reynolds Center.

Southern Nazarene, an NAIA school from Bethany, was picked to finish fourth in the 12-school Sooner Athletic Conference. The Crimson Storm is 2-0 this season.

Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik is treating the game like a regular-season contest, from scouting to expectations on the court.

"At this stage, we're looking for execution on both ends of the floor," Wojcik said. "We have high standards for this team, and I feel like we should be playing or clicking on a lot of cylinders, as if we're two or three weeks into the season."

It will be the second time that TU will play under a game situation. It spent Saturday morning scrimmaging nationally ranked Oklahoma in an NCAA-allowed game. No statistics were released, and fans and media weren't allowed at the game.

On Monday, fans will get their first look at incoming freshmen Donte Medder, Bryson Pope and Kodi Maduka.

"It's going to be fun to get out here on the home court and get the season under way," senior Ben Uzoh said. "We'll get to show the fans the things that we've been focusing on and get the new guys acclimated."

What has impressed Uzoh about the newcomers?

"Their maturity and skill level," he said. "They don't know everything yet, but they're picking things up real fast. They're students of the game and asking questions."

TU opens the regular season in five days against St. Mary's (Texas), with an upcoming Friday-Sunday-Tuesday stretch. For that reason, Wojcik will work in rotations against Southern Nazarene.

"They'll play minutes," he said. "We're treating this like we're starting the season tomorrow and getting ready for that big swing next week."
