TU Notebook: Low turnout
Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne (5) prepares to throw the ball during the first quarter of a NCAA college football game against Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009. AP PHOTO

Low turnout: Cold, rainy weather in Hattiesburg, Miss., held down the crowd for Saturday's nationally televised game.
The stands were roughly half to two-thirds full at kickoff, and an announced crowd of 28,757 was the second-lowest in Roberts Stadium this season.
Back in action:
A.J. Whitmore suited up for the first time in three weeks and caught a 3-yard pass from G.J. Kinne on the second play of the game.
Whitmore missed the Houston and East Carolina games with a concussion.
Senior receiver Slick Shelley suited up, but did not play. Shelley has been out of action since getting injured in the first quarter of the Houston game.
Touchdown maker:
Charles Clay scored four touchdowns, tying a career high. He had two rushing and two receiving scores for his second multiple-touchdown game in three weeks and the sixth of his career.
Clay also had four TDs in the 46-45 loss to Houston on Nov. 7. Saturday's game was his fifth with at least one rushing and one receiving score in the same game.
His two rushing scores gave him six this season.
Six the wrong way:
Tulsa allowed its fourth defensive touchdown in two games when USM's Ronnie Thornton returned 42 yards on Kinne's fumble in the second quarter.
USM's Cordarro Law sacked Kinne, causing the fumble. Kinne had two interceptions and a fumble returned for scores in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's 44-17 loss to East Carolina.
Long bomb:
Martevious Young's 95-yard TD pass to DeAndre Brown in the third quarter was the second-longest pass play in USM history.
Climbing the chart:
Damaris Johnson went into fourth place in Conference USA career kickoff return yardage with a 23-yard return in the second quarter.
Johnson finished the first half with 92 yards on four returns. That gave him 2,424 yards, bypassing Michael Grandberry of Memphis, who had 2,401 yards in 2005-08. Zek Parker of Louisville is third with 2,558 yards in 1998-01.
Mildcat offense:
The Hurricane ran four first-half plays with Clay taking direct snaps from center in shotgun formation. The first three netted only a yard each before Clay gained 6 on first-and-10 from the TU 6 in the second quarter.
Whitmore took a snap and handed to Damaris Johnson to start a double-reverse. Redshirt freshman running back Willie Carter finished the play by scooting 7 yards up the sideline with Johnson's lateral.
Fast feet:
Kinne's 55-yard scoring run in the second quarter was Tulsa's longest rushing play of the season. Kinne had the previous long gainer on the ground, a 45-yard scoring run in the season opener at Tulane.
Sidelined:
Sophomore guard Clint Anderson was hobbled early in the second quarter and seemed to be favoring his left knee or ankle as he was helped off the field by trainers.
Freshman Brian DeShane played the remainder of the first half in Anderson's spot.
For starters:
Senior cornerback Kenny D. Sims made his 32nd consecutive start Saturday. Senior guard Curt Puckett made his 31st consecutive start and senior linebacker Mike Bryan made his 24th.

Slick did play. He entered for one play in the second half with TU threatening. Kinne threw a pass to him that was incomplete a few yards from where I was sitting.
