Loss ends TU's bowl hopes
Southern Miss sprints past Golden Hurricane.
Southern Mississippi's Cordarro Law sacks Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne on Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss. Matt Bush / The Hattiesburg American / Associated Press

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Mother Nature was the only thing that could stop Southern Miss' high-scoring offense on Saturday night.
A 50-minute weather suspension only delayed the inevitable in Tulsa's 44-34 loss to the Golden Eagles. The defeat guaranteed TU its first losing season since 2004.
"It's really disappointing," said TU coach Todd Graham, whose team has lost six consecutive contests. "We really came down here with a great focus. There's been a lot of negativity and these guys don't deserve it.
"These guys have won more football games than any group that's ever been in our school. We haven't got it done this year. We've fallen short."
Tulsa won't play in a bowl game for the first time in five years.
"It's really frustrating, not only for me but the seniors," Tulsa's Charles Clay said. "We're trying to do everything we can to send these guys out right. I could just feel the pain that they're feeling and they're going through. It's heartbreaking to know they won't get to a bowl game."
The Golden Hurricane (4-7 overall, 2-5 in Conference USA) trailed 44-28 when stormy weather rolled into Hattiesburg, sending the teams and an announced crowd of 28,757 fans at Roberts Stadium scurrying for cover.
The elements weren't the only display of lightning-quick force on this evening.
The Eagles (7-4, 5-2) had a 60-yard touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage and scored 17 consecutive points to capture control.
Southern Miss had a go-ahead touchdown on Tory Harrison's 1-yard run with 34 seconds left before halftime, and then threw a haymaker via Martevious Young's 95-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Brown to grab a 41-28 lead midway through the third quarter. Daniel Hrapmann's 25-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the third quarter gave the home team a 44-28 advantage.
Tulsa had the ball on the Southern Miss 31-yard line with 13:58 remaining when officials suspended the game because of storms.
It was TU's first delay since a 2006 road game at BYU. The Hurricane lost 49-24 in Provo after an hour-long stoppage because of the weather.
When play resumed, TU continued its drive to the Southern Miss 1. After a 2-yard loss, G.J. Kinne threw an interception to Martez Smith that killed the drive.
"We turned the football over tonight, but we did a lot of great things offensively," Graham said.
TU finished with a season-high 589 yards of offense, including Kinne's 396 passing yards.
Tulsa took the ball to the Southern Miss 15 on its next drive, but lost the ball on downs.
Kinne also had two fumbles in the defeat, including one that was returned 42 yards for a touchdown in the first half. He has seven turnovers in the past two games, with four being returned for defensive scores.
"It's not protecting the quarterback," Graham said. "The guy is running for his life. The one fumble for a touchdown, it's a max (blitz) and we're protecting with seven guys. One guy busted ... we have to get better up front."
On TU's next-to-last possession, Kinne threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Clay, who had his second four-touchdown performance in the past three games.
Things started great for the Hurricane. TU scored TDs on its first two drives to grab a 14-6 lead after one quarter.
The offenses owned the first half, with Southern Miss taking a 34-28 lead into halftime. Of the game's first 12 possessions between the teams, nine resulted in touchdown drives.
The Eagles scored four touchdowns against Tulsa in the second quarter, including Harrison's run before intermission, to take a 34-28 advantage at intermission. Clay's touchdowns included a 1-yard plunge with 1:39 left before halftime to give TU a short-lived 28-27 lead. Clay had a 2-yard touchdown run and a 3-yard scoring run to help Tulsa take a 14-6 lead after the first quarter.
Young completed 12-of-21 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns.
His biggest throw came in the third quarter. Young found sophomore DeAndre Brown down the right sideline, and the wide receiver beat the secondary for the second-longest pass play in Southern Miss history.
The Hurricane wraps up the regular season with Friday's home game against Memphis. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. at Chapman Stadium.

Is someone trying to tell Todd Graham something by delaying the game? He better make the necessary changes if he wants to win this game.

Odds on how many times TG uses the word "outcoached" in his press conference after the game? How about how many times he says "we had a chance to win the ballgame"?

Personally, I have seen about enough of GJ Kinne as I can stand. Clearly he is not the answer at the quarterback position. He gets happy feet and refuses to stay in the pocket, and seems to think Damaris Johnson is the only receiver out running any sort of route on passing plays. TU needs to find a QB who can progress through his reads and look to get other receivers the ball. Trae Johnson had 70 catches and over 1,000 yards as a Freshman. Now a Junior, he has less than 20 catches this year.
Obviously this year, TU was going to take a step back, but I did not think the step was going to be this dramatic.

TU will never have the money or the ability to recruit top shelf talent at coach or athlete, which is why we always get lucky sometimes and catch a young coach on his way up and that brings respectability to our program... This time we may have missed...

An outstanding university like TU doesn't have to have a winning football team in my humble opinion. I like the kids on this team and think they tried their best this season.
Having said that, I think I've seen enough of Todd Graham waving his arms and yelling at these kids like an idiot. Instead of waiting for someone to come haul Graham away, let's call Gus Malzahn FIRST and be pro-active for once.

OU and Tulsa are both just having a bad year. Every team has a bad year every few years bc of new rookies and NFL drafts. This just isn't the year for Tulsa or OU but you still gotta love 'em! Thats whats so great about Football in Oklahoma. Even win they lose it was still a fun game.

While the TU faithful must accept the disapointment of this football season. We must never lose infinite hope for better results next season and the action necessary by the those in charge to affect that change.

Yes I agree with the comment that Kinne does not regularly progress through his reads and, as a result, that talents like Trae Johnson and Slick Shelley were not used to their maximum potential. But the problem is not that Kinne does not progress through his reads, the problem is that Kinne does not have time to progress through his reads. I have all the respect for the spirit and combativeness of TU's offensive line, but their are simply too many positions across the line where talent is lacking to play D-1 ball. Improve line play and Kinne becomes a top tier qb, the running game returns and the passing game excels. Get some major JUCO linemen in here ASAP or next season may not be much improved.
