An overtime goal by Ashley McInnes ruined a comeback by Saint Louis and gave Tulsa a 4-3 victory Sunday at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium in the second round of the men's NCAA Tournament.

The win also gave TU a home game against Northwestern at 2 p.m. next Sunday. The Hurricane is now 14-4-2 and ranked between seventh and 14th in various national polls.

"We got just the start we wanted, but then we lost some discipline and started to come in second for all the loose balls at midfield," TU coach Tom McIntosh said. "We're going to have to be a lot more focused in the next game. Fortunately, we've got a week to work on it."

Saint Louis, which trailed by two goals for much of the game, sent the match into overtime when James Dice scored from short range with just four seconds remaining in regulation. That set up a possible reverse repeat of the first meeting two months ago when Saint Louis took a 2-0 lead but Tulsa rallied to win, 4-3, in two overtimes.

That script was altered when McInnes ran onto a nice pass from midfielder Joe Salem, maneuvered past a defender and rocketed a shot from about 12 yards after 7:30 of the first sudden-death overtime. It was the only shot on goal by either team in the extra period.

Tulsa took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half by scoring twice in 74 seconds. A corner kick resulted in a scramble in the penalty box before Hurricane forward Austin Neil got possession and scored from short range at the 20:48 mark.

It was Neil's team-leading 12th goal and his fourth in Tulsa's three postseason games.

Just over a minute later, Hurricane defender Blaine Gonsalves outlasted a Billiken defender for possession and drilled a shot into the upper-right corner from about 15 yards out on the left side. It was his third goal (on only 11 shots) of the season.

Saint Louis' Alex Sweetin took a pass about 30 yards from goal, slipped past a defender and scored from just inside the penalty box to narrow Tulsa's lead to 2-1 with less than eight minutes left in the first half.

Tulsa appeared to ice the game midway through the second half when it cleared a Saint Louis corner kick and forwards Jose Parada and Killian Poeschk set sail on a two-on-one fastbreak. Parada dribbled more than half the length of the field and then chipped the ball over Billiken goalie Ross Kaufman for a 3-1 lead with about 25 minutes to play.

Saint Louis got back into contention just five minutes later when Sweetin, who had scored only once before this game, beat two defenders in the box to score.

The Billikens got a chance to tie the game in the final seconds when Tulsa defender Justin Chavez was whistled for a foul a few yards in front of Tulsa's penalty area. Dice was then able to beat Tulsa keeper Andy Aguilar with a low shot into the left side of the net.

Tulsa has won 11 of its last 13 games. TU lost three times in September and one of those was to Northwestern, 3-2, in overtime.

Great match; great story! This is the TU team that alums should be bragging about. Tom McIntosh is the Tulsa coach who alums should be concerned about keeping - both a great recruiter and great strategist.

This is the 'football' team that should get the headlines for TU.
