FORT MYERS, Fla. — Freshman point guard Taleya Mayberry recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists Saturday to lead the Tulsa women's basketball team to a 70-64 win over Akron in the FGCU Thanksgiving Classic at Alico Arena.

Tulsa saw a 14-point lead dwindle to two, but Mayberry, a Booker T. Washington graduate, hit two free throws with 26 seconds remaining, and junior guard Tatum Beer converted two more free throws to ice the game for the Golden Hurricane (3-1).

Beer, a Sapulpa graduate, scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers in the first half, and sophomore forward Denise Lewis added 12 points. Senior forward Larrissa Williams contributed nine points, while senior forward Teka Brooks had eight. Mayberry's double-double was the first of her career and first of the season for TU.

The Golden Hurricane shot 48 percent from the floor and was 5-of-11 on 3-pointers.

Akron used a 14-2 run to cut the lead to 65-63 with 1:13 remaining in the game. Tulsa's only field goal in the final five minutes was a fastbreak layup by Williams, on a pass from junior guard Kensey Hall. However, Mayberry and Beer converted the two big one-and-ones, and Williams made one more free throw to close out the game for the Golden Hurricane.
