First base coach dies after he is struck during a game in Little Rock.

Tulsa Drillers hitting instructor and first base coach Mike Coolbaugh died Sunday night after a foul line drive struck him in the head in the top of the ninth inning during a game against the Arkansas Travelers at Dickey-Stephens Stadium in North Little Rock, Ark.

The Drillers' radio announcer, Mark Neely, said during the game's broadcast that Coolbaugh, 35, was struck in the left temple by a hard-hit

line drive from Tulsa's Tino Sanchez and immediately fell backward.

Coolbaugh reportedly lost consciousness and stopped breathing. He was administered CPR on the field and was taken by ambulance to Baptist Medical Center in North Little Rock where he was pronounced dead at 9:47 p.m., said Terry Kuykendall, a spokesman for the North Little Rock police department.

"It's a tragedy for all of baseball," Drillers president Chuck Lamson said. "He just joined the staff and was a former Driller player. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. "

Kuykendall said "Coolbaugh died of massive head injures."

Coolbaugh joined the Drillers staff July 3 during the team's trip to San Antonio.

He played in seven games for the Drillers in 1996 and spent 17 seasons in professional baseball, appearing in a combined 44 games with the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Coolbaugh was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 16th round in 1990. He also spent time in the Texas, Oakland and New York Yankees organizations.

A broken wrist ended his playing career last season.

Coolbaugh and his brother, Scott Coolbaugh, are the only brothers in professional baseball to play with both the Drillers and the Cardinals.

Scott Coolbaugh is the hitting instructor for the Frisco RoughRiders.

The Colorado Rockies' assistant general manager and vice president of baseball operations, Bill Geivett, spoke highly of Mike Coolbaugh while in Tulsa last week.

"We did a lengthy search and we like what we saw in Mike," Geivett said.

Drillers' first baseman Aaron Rifkin praised Coolbaugh's coaching style during the team's most recent home stand.

"Mike has helped me a lot and the whole team," Rifkin said. "He came in and didn't try to change guys, just fine-tune what they were doing. He's been great for me."

Mike Coolbaugh is survived by his wife, Mandy Coolbaugh, and two sons, Joseph and Jacob, all of San Antonio. The couple is expecting their third child in October.

The game was suspended in the ninth inning after the accident with Little Rock leading, 7-3.

Lamson said he believed that the Drillers' series with Wichita, which was to begin Monday, would be postponed.

In May, the Tulsa pitcher Jon Asahina was struck by a line drive on the left side of the head at the same Arkansas field. He just recently rejoined the team.

My prayers go out to the family. I am a UT fan and watched Mike's brother, Scott play at UT. I also had the chance to watch Mike play with the Round Rock Express. He was an excellent baseball player, a wonderful family man and an overall terrific role model. I am deeply sadden by the tradegy and very grateful to have seen him play the game. Baseball and the world are missing an outstanding man.

Yes it is a terrible tragedy, but I was trying to figure out the headline. What do they mean he is "overdrawn"???

Anyone care to speculate??

Please know that prayers from all over the country are pouring out to this young family after such a tragedy. I also especially pray for the young man whose bat the ball came off of. It was not his fault, but I can't imagine how he feels as well as the entire Drillers' family. God speed your healing.

This is a horrible tragedy. I believe ball players should have something a little more than what they now to protect their heads, like what the batters wear.

This incident could change this and I hope it does.

Our family sends its deepest condolensces to the Coolbaugh family, the Tulsa Drillers, and the Driller fans. With three children myself, it makes me realize even more what I have to lose if something should happen. This is a tragedy! Tino should feel no blame in this tragedy...it is a freak accident! Things will go on, however! The Drillers will go on and play, but Coach Coolbaugh will always be remembered by the staff and the fans in Tulsa!

Please, please pray now for the batter, as mentioned in post 4. He will carry this burden with him his entire life. Godspeed to Mr. Coolbaugh's precious wife and children, his family and the entire Drillers family.

Prayers to the Coolbaugh family, and Tino Sanchez as well. While no blame can possibly go around, it would have to be tough to cope with.

To the Coolbaugh family and our Tulsa friends, know that we were praying for this young man in the stands last night. It was moving to see the doctors and nurses who left the stands and went down to the field to try to help. Our family stopped and prayed in the car. It was a terribly sad ending to what had been a wonderful evening. "He is the father of compassion and the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our afflictions..." 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

What does the headline word "overdrawn" mean?

Does it make sense to anyone? My deepest sympathies are with the Tulsa Drillers and the Coolbaugh and Sanchez families.

I too am very saddened by what happened. My condolences go out to the family. My nephew a few years ago played ball for Shreveport and would have pitched at that ball diamond in Little Rock a time or two.

He also pitched against the Drillers.

God bless everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.

I read in disbelief this morning the article about Coach Coolbaugh and my heart goes out to his family and his extended family (the Drillers and the citizens of Tulsa). What a terrible loss. I was at a Travelers - Drillers game just this past Thursday night, and the least I can offer is my thanks and appreciation to the players and coaches on both sides for providing us, on that more fortunate evening, an idyllic minor-league baseball experience.

It means the headline the editor wrote was too long for the page layout software to read. No biggie, just a simple error message. It's irrelevant to the story. And it's been fixed.

The tragedy hits home here in St. Louis too, as Mike briefly played with the Cardinals in 2002, which was the year we lost Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck, who had been battling cancer for some time, but an even bigger blow happened just four days later when Darryl Kile died unexpectedly.

Mike's family needs our prayers, and so does Tino Sanchez, who I'm sure could not have foreseen where that ball was going to go.

This is a sad day for baseball. My thoughts and prayers to both families. let`s all remind everyone the importance of safety first when involved in all sports. Sammy Sosa got hit on the head 3 days ago, players run against the rails when chasing foul balls, fans get hit with foul balls. Even thou baseball is a great sport, we should always be aware of where the ball is at all times. God Bless Everyone.
