Aggie coach tries to agitate Sooners

By DAVE SITTLER World Sports Columnist

NORMAN -- Perhaps Dennis Franchione is still pouting that Bob Stoops beat him out for the Oklahoma job he coveted. Or maybe Franchione has conceded that Texas A&M's going to fire him in a few months. And then there's that 77-0 whipsawing the Sooners put on the Aggies in 2003, which left Franchione in tears.

For whatever curious reason, Franchione decided to fire a verbal shot Wednesday at the OU program. It's a shot I guarantee you will be heard around the Sooner football coaching offices often between now and when the two teams meet Nov. 3 on Owen Field.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Franchione, while speaking to the Hous ton Touchdown Club and breaking down the Big 12's South Division race, couldn't resist jabbing the Sooners when he talked about their uncertainty at quarterback.

"That may be the only question they have . . . other than what jobs they are going to work this year," Franchione said. "That is a joke; I couldn't resist."

Franchione's "joke" was in reference to Stoops kicking two players off the team last summer when he learned they had accepted money for work not completed at a Norman car dealership.

Starting sophomore quarterback Rhett Bomar was one of them. Stoops' drastic action not only created an immediate problem for OU, it meant the Sooners would enter the 2007 season with three inexperienced quarterbacks.

Stoops declined to fire back at Franchione on Friday, the day OU conducted its annual media day. Well, he sort of declined.

Strongly emphasizing that he was not addressing any one coach, Stoops said: "There are a lot of people who have a lot to say when they don't have a Big 12 championship to talk about."

Stoops, of course, overcame the loss of Bomar and an injury to All-American tailback Adrian Peterson to win his fourth Big 12 title in eight seasons at OU. During that stretch, he is 7-1 against A&M and 4-0 against Franchione, including that 77-point win that Franchione later told Sports Illustrated reduced him to tears.

And before any Aggie fans start firing off angry e-mails denying that Franchione wanted the OU job, they should consider this: When John Blake was fired after the 1998 season, Franchione telephoned me to ask if I would write columns pushing him for the job. He made a similar request to at least one Oklahoma City sportscaster.

Franchione has never won the South Division of the Big 12, let alone a league title. The Aggies have finished no higher than third in the South in his four seasons, which is why Franchione is on the hot seat.

"There are some guys talking about, 'If this happened in this game, and this happened in that game,' in like three or four games, they'd be Big 12 champions," said Stoops, again stressing that he was talking in the plural. "Who had more happen to them last season than us?"

Stoops, who has coached OU to five Big 12 title games, will long consider the 2006 conference championship among his favorite accomplishments because of the adversity his team overcame.

But exactly one year after he met the press at the 2006 media day, Stoops was thrilled over what a difference 365 days can make. He acknowledged that at this time last August, he felt like someone had slugged him in the gut when he learned Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn had lied about their employment at the car dealership.

"A year ago, I didn't have a hand in it," Stoops said of NCAA rules that were broken. "But it tugs at you . . . that it reflects on you in such a negative way when it wasn't you. That part is hard.

"But now I feel like a million bucks."

Some think Stoops should feel like he has a million reasons to worry because the quarterback position is so unsettled on a team that otherwise could be good enough to defend its Big 12 title.

Between now and the Sept. 1 opener against North Texas, Stoops must settle on a starter out of a trio of untested quarterbacks. The candidates include junior Joey Halzle, redshirt freshman Sam Bradford and true freshman Keith Nichol.

Still, it's not crazy to suggest that OU's quarterback situation is a lot more settled than it was a year ago at media day. Just one day earlier, Stoops had sent Bomar packing and asked Paul Thompson to switch from wide receiver back to the quarterback position where he had previously struggled.

"I don't know exactly how to describe it," Stoops said. "But a year ago, I felt betrayed. And there was so much uncertainty (at quarterback).

"But now there is no uncertainty. I can say that because these (coaches) have seen these (quarterbacks) every day, and they know what they are getting. It's a more confident situation by a long shot."

Speaking of shots, Stoops should have a quarterback who's ready to launch a few at Franchione and the Aggies three months from now. But they'll be fired on a football field in Norman instead of a hotel ballroom in Houston.

Wow . . . Fran is finally coming out of his coma. I wish he would have popped off at Leach instead.

What an attempt to kiss up and rally OU. Twist and turn a person's joke into an attempt to make a story out of nothing. As a fan and not one of the Big 12, I think it is clear bs that ou gets away with what they admitted and were caught doing. Other teams including a&m were punished 10 times as hard a few years back for the same exact thing. Now how is it that fair? It is not, it is a clear joke of how the schools that have consistantly recruit problem players over the years, keep getting slaps on the wrists and do a poll across the nation and see where ou ranks on integrity and character among the players and coaches throughout history. OU has consistantly broken the law off the field and consistantly gray and crossed the spirit of the rules of the ncaa. They are no where near a model program. OU is not the only schools guilty of this, just look at 80% of the top 10 schools, and they consistantly get away with breaking the rules, the law, but yes they do win, and then their players continue to do the same stuff later on. Look at all the suspect players, in the past and how they ruined their careers later and some of their lives later, now there are plenty of character players out there in the Big 12, and at ou. So if there is a joke out there it is how does one school get off so easily for doing the same thing and turning it in to the ncaa in the same manner??? HMMM suspect.

Nice try

Thanks for the unbiased opinion. If you do a little digging, you'll hear people saying a lot more than a little joke about OU's football program. You took a harmless statement, that wasn't even funny, and turned it into an entire article to take shots at the Aggies. Now that's what I call great journalism! I know it's a slow sports season in Tulsa right now, but come on, you can come up with something better than that.

Not too sure where your comments about A&M fans getting mad that Fran was interested in OU prior to him even going to Alabama......Who really cares, he was at a non BCS school and wanted to to join a bcs conference. And one other thing, it was a harmless JOKE.

Still, why did Franchione have to say it? What's the benefit. He should know first hand how rougue boosters can effect a program, does Alabama ring a bell?

In this day and age of quick information and being under the media microscope, why say that. He should have a little more respect for the coaching fraternity. I think 12-7 is going to his head a little too much.

Steve,

How can one respect a program, a coach and a school- with as many blatant infractions as OU has had in its recent history. I used to respect Stoops and the NCAA. But that respect was lost in the last couple of years. I think he is a great coach but I don't think he is playing by the same rules.

Same can be said for Pete Carroll, USC and Reggie Bush.

The NCAA is starting to look like the MLB.

Wow you guys really can't take a joke. You make aggie jokes all the time, but by golly joking about OU is just now allowed. You guys need to lighten up. If this is what you need to get fired up that is pretty pathetic. It was a "joke", get a life.

WOW, you really are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Sure Fran took a shot, or jab. Its about time he showed a little moxy. However if you dug a little deeper, he also stated that OU is the team to beat in the Big 12 and is the favorite to win. So whats your comment on that?

As far as programs? It has to be said that since Fran has been here, he has only recruited character guys. Unlike, OU or tu. THe top two teams in the big 12. I would rather be a fan of a mediocre team with players that have integrity, ethics, and poise then to be embarrassed weekly because my players cant seem to every pull themselves out of the ghetto.

Try doing some real reporting or get a new job. I tihnk Stoops has an opening for a "gopher boy".

The moment Bob Stoops found out about the infraction he kicked the players off the team, not suspended for 1 game like Troy Smith was, but booted permanently. Troy Smith later won the Heisman. I don't know what else he could have done to please his rivals. Perhaps submit for a bowl ban?

Blatant infractions in recent history? I know of know others that the football program was accused of other than 20 years ago. Stoops wasn't around then. Was he?

OU forfeited all of their 2005 wins because they cheated. Mr. Sittler should revise his column to reflect the facts.

I think it's funny you reference the 77-0 game, as that game featured an amateur team (A&M) playing against a bunch of paid professionals.

Most amateur athletic programs are going to get beat when they face a professional program.

We will see how OU does over the next few years now that they have to play on the same level playing field as the rest of the Big 12.

Of couse, after the slap on the wrist the NCAA gave you, and knowing how most Okies have a blatant disregard for the rules, I wouldn't be surprised if you guys didn't step up payments this offseason.

Poor Bob Stoops ... "Didn't have a hand in it ... that it reflects on you in such a negative way when it wasn't you." The HEAD coach didn't know where his STARTING QB was or wasn't working during the summer? Yeah, sure, coach ... play the "ever-so-innocent" 5-year old little boy approach to yet, ANOTHER cheating episode at the "role-model" university. First the Sooner basketball program, then the baseball program, and now the football program .... ALL IN THE SAME CALENDAR YEAR!!!!!!! Way to carry out the tradition of cheating at OU, Stoops!

Why on earth would Stoops feel so great about a title he cheated to "win"?

And what's even funnier Dave is that you undoubtedly knew for some time that the OU program was dirty, but for some reason did nothing about it. Seems quite odd that you didn't jump at the chance to make a name for yourself.

I'm unsurprised as its typical of journalistic "integrity" these days, but whatever OU or its boosters are paying you, is it worth consigning yourself to a backwater like Tulsa?

Stoops is a cheater, plain and simple. If the truth hurts, perhaps he should engage in more equitable competitive practices.

And perhaps you, Dave, should see to it that he does.

I guess I'm surprised by a few things.

I'm surprised Davey would be such an unabashed homer. I guess he didn't want to mention that Fran quickly added that OU was the team to beat. I suppose that gets in the way of a "big" story.

I'm surprised about the reaction from Fran because you hear Mike Leach making jokes all the team and writers like Davey thinks they cute and funny.

I'm surprised Stoops didn't want to comment about any specific coaches yet made specific comments. Gee, Bob you sound a little threatened. A national championshi and multiple Big12 titles to his name and he's flustered about comments from a .500 coach? Either he's very thin skinned or worried about something. Maybe he should focus on what his players are doing if doesn't want anymore comments.

I'm surprised Fran wouldn't "let sleeping dogs lie". Its not like he has alot to talk about. In the vein of Dean Wormer on Animal House, ".500 conference record, 2 for a whole lot against your major rivals, and getting smoked in bowl games is no way to go through life son."

My guess is everyone should ligthen up.

If Stoops was such the "better" man, why did he feel the need to defend himself by saying, "There are a lot of people who have a lot to say when they don't have a Big 12 championship to talk about." Stoops is not a saint and since the Big Red scsandal, I have lost a lot of respect for him and the program. I'm an OU fan/grad, but we can not get angry for the jabs and jokes. Actually, A&M is the team I fear this year. Atleast this will motivate OU during the game.

Typical Sittler article, trying to create a story when there isn't one. Journalists don't report news anymore, they try to create it. Must be his time of the month getting all emotional about nothing.
