OU Notebook: High expectations

The New Tulsa World Sports Extra: For the latest scores, stories, photos and stats on OU, OSU an TU football, as well as the rest of college football.

Did Oklahoma play perfect in a 79-10 rout of North Texas on Saturday? No. But did they surpass head coach Bob Stoops' expectations? Not quite.

"I would say meet (expectations)," he said. "I've seen us, having eight years of being out here, we've had some games that have gotten lopsided wins and gotten ahead in the second half, and the second half gives me nightmares. I go home just totally aggravated because guys get in late, lose their focus, have penalties, break down, their intensity wanes a little and you break down in coverage or you miss an adjustment and you give something that, regardless of who you're playing, you busted. And we didn't have that.

"To me, it's just reflective of . . . they've got a great focus to them and an attitude in how they work and they're prideful in how they prepare and play. . . . That's pleasing. I've pulled my hair out countless number of games where you just get guys in there and it just aggravates you because they're not prepared to play."

Mountain home: Stoops impressed the media on Tuesday when he was asked if he knows where Appalachian State University is located.

"Boone, North Carolina," he replied. But he knew that a long time ago, and it didn't have anything to do with Saturday's 34-32 Mountaineer victory at No. 5 Michigan.

"In fact, way back about 16-17 years ago, somebody sold me a timeshare there. Never been to it," Stoops said. "So, if anybody's looking for one up in Boone, they can have it."

En Espanol: Saturday's contest with Miami will be the first OU game to be broadcast in Spanish by an Oklahoma station. KTUZ (fm106.7 in Oklahoma City) carries the game with Rene Nava and James Kopelman.

Kickin' it: Garrett Hartley tied a record with 11 PATs against North Texas, but surely his 817 yards on kickoffs belongs in a record book somewhere. He had three touchbacks and his kicks averaged touching down at the 2-yard line. UNT's average return was just 13.7 yards, and the Mean Green's average starting field position was its own 22.

"Garrett kicked the ball in a great way on his kickoffs," Stoops said. "I think he was inside the 15 most of the night."

Kick times: Stoops was asked whether he prefers kickoff times to be early (the Miami game starts at 11 a.m.) or late (North Texas began at 6 p.m.)

"Selfishly, for us, (early kickoffs are) great, and the players as well," he said. "Because you get up and you're not having to sit around and think about it and wait for it all day. You get up and here it is, you go. So for us, I love it. But I recognize for the fans and everyone else that it is not the best. But we have no say-so at all in scheduling. That's all TV. We just play when they tell us to."

Coaching circles: Stoops said he and first-year Miami head coach Randy Shannon go way back.

"Just longtime defensive coaches," Stoops said. "I used to bump into him when I recruited south Florida and southeast Florida for Kansas State from time to time down there recruiting. And my brother Mark coached with him for a few years there on their national championship team with coach (Larry) Coker. And they came out and watched us a few years ago for practice when we were getting ready for the Orange Bowl, they were out there for a little bit. Just different occasions we've been around each other a little bit."

Sooner receiver Broyles charged

An attempted larceny misdemeanor charge was filed against Oklahoma wide receiver Ryan Broyles Tuesday, in connection with Broyles’ arrest early last Friday for using a key and override codes to steal gas from a Norman convenience store.

According to Greg Mashburn, the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office representative who filed the charge, a guilty verdict carries a maximum 15-day jail term and $1,000 fine.

OU coach Bob Stoops confirmed Tuesday that Broyles remains suspended indefinitely from games.

OU has said it will investigate the matter. Norman police Capt. Leonard Judy said Tuesday that Norman police are also considering an investigation.

Ron Henderson, owner of the Mr. Shortstop where Broyles was arrested, said he had been experiencing fuel inventory inconsistencies for several months.
