David, Goliath to clash
STEPHEN PINGRY / Tulsa World

Experts in Las Vegas figure Oklahoma to be about three touchdowns better than Tulsa.
Many believe that’s not enough points, but others believe a shocking upset is not out of the question.
In a classic David vs. Goliath, Tulsa is clearly the guy with a slingshot.
Oklahoma comes to TU for a rare Friday night college football game at Chapman Stadium.
It would appear to be a huge mismatch. The Sooners have romped and stomped their way to three lopsided victories.
On the other hand, it could be argued that OU’s three victims aren’t close to the level of Tulsa.
Either way, few believe the Golden Hurricane is capable of a stunning upset.
TU coaches and players acknowledge their underdog role.
“Not many people are giving us a chance,” said TU coach Todd Graham. “Hey, that’s where we want to be.”
Tulsa should relish the underdog role because it is a familiar spot for the Hurricane against teams from BCS leagues.
Tulsa hasn’t beaten a team from one of the so called power leagues since Oklahoma State in 1998.
The Hurricane last pulled off a shocking upset in 1996 when it beat 19th ranked Iowa and then won on the road in Norman.
Yes, it could be huge.
But there are some wearing blue and gold who are just hoping Friday’s game doesn’t turn into a runaway.
With the way Oklahoma has played in three games, coupled with Tulsa’s problems on defense, that seems possible.
Still, as TU quarterback Paul Smith said, why should “anyone be scared. There are a lot of people that would love to be in my shoes.”
Smith wasn’t scared two years ago when he put Tulsa in position during the fourth quarter to win in Norman. OU was saved by two fabulous runs by Adrian Peterson.
For Tulsa, this is its chance to get the attention it craves for a football program that has undergone a revival in the past four years.
“We worked just about all night long (after last week’s victory over BYU),” said Graham. “This is what you go into coaching for, to have an opportunity, like we’re going to have on Friday night.
“I’m not going to have to give any motivational speeches to my players. We went out and practiced (Sunday) night after playing a very physical game and we had 100 percent of our kids in practice and fired up and ready to go and not one of them was thinking about BYU.”
That will be the challenge for Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
Stoops has made a living at OU winning games the Sooners should win.
That’s a tribute to Stoops. He gets the full attention of his players and motivates them for every opponent.
He’s very fond of saying, about any team facing the Sooners, that they have players and coaches, who want to win, too.
That would be especially true this week.
Some of Oklahoma’s players who are not from the state might have a tendency to underestimate Tulsa.
Yet, those from this area know all about Tulsa’s football history. They know all about Tulsa’s long history of winning and list of All-Americans and Pro Football Hall of Famers.
“We see it again as just another major part of this season in building for the year,” said Stoops. “You have to go on the road against a team that’s 2-0 and really playing well. You want to go over there and just improve this week, to play better and to execute on the road against a good team and gives ourselves the opportunity to win.
“They’re doing an excellent job. It’s a well coached team.”
This is not the first time the Sooners have been a huge favorite in a game this season.
After beating up Miami, Oklahoma seemed focus and in-synch for the game against outmanned Utah State.
“There had been talk all week about a letdown, so just pleased with the methodical way our players had through the week and got themselves prepared to play and the pride they take,” said Stoops.
What would it take for Tulsa to shock the college football world?
Well, it would take some help. Oklahoma would have to be off on offense and cough up a few turnovers. BYU had four turnovers in the second half at TU last week and lost by a touchdown.
In addition, it would take another great night from Smith, something that has become commonplace for TU’s QB in the last three years.
“Paul and them aren’t giddy and don’t know what to expect . . . We’re going to find out exactly how good we are on Friday,” Graham said.
Three reasons TU upsets OU
1. Paul Smith (left) has a career-game and totals over 500 yards.
2.OU plays sloppily and commits four turnovers, just like BYU.
3.OU doesn’t take the game seriously.
Three reasons TU has no chance
1.TU’s defense plays poorly for a second straight week.
2.Bob Stoops makes sure the Sooners don’t take Tulsa lightly.
3.Tulsa’s offense sputters against the best defense it will see this year.
Why OU wins by three touchdowns
Paul Smith is the most underrated quarterback in the nation.
He just doesn’t have the kind of talent around him as the Sooners have around Sam Bradford.
OU’s defense slows down Tulsa to key a comfortable victory.

This game will be closer than most people think b/c of the spread offense run by Malzahn.

I just woke up from a dream in a very clear vision that Tulsa won 21-20. I hope I am right.

Please, please, PLEASE drop the David-Goliath garbage. Remember Boise State? Sports pundits clamored about the disparity (which didn't exist, by the way) simply because of Oklahoma's history. History, as we've found out, is for the historians to write -- not sports columnists who write the same column every time OU plays TU. "Oh! Oh! It's David vs. Goliath! For the 52nd time!" As I recall from my journalism days, editors discouraged cliches. This is one of the biggest of all.

What competition has TU? Did anyone see what Miami did to T A&M? Tulsa has NO chance.

Tulsa has a good offense but i think OUs D is to good for them to make any yards i could be wrong, but i think OU is to balanced to be beat by a only offense team.
Go Sooners!

Yes, please drop the David-Goliath garbage. Boise State was ranked 9th before that game and OU was ranked 8th. The game was a 1 point win in overtime. Tulsa is nowhere near that team and this OU team is the same one from last year except more experienced and with a better QB. Even if Tulsa is significantly better than any team OU has played they will still lose by 3 touchdowns...half the margin of any other team OU has played. That is still doing signifcantly better than UNT, Miami, and Utah St.

Does anyone really believe Tulsa could slap around Texas A.M. like Miami did? 1996 this is not Blakes team anymore!

This is the only matchup I ever root against OU but I have to say that I hope that the OU program is as confident as the OU fans and lets TU jump up and bite them.
Stoops will never let that happen though, he is to good a coach.
Go TU!!!

I think that this game will be one to remember... I was at the TU/OU game a few yrs back at Norman and TU gave the sooners a run for their money. This game could possibly be just as crazy as the Michigan and App. State game...

TU has no chance to win this one. OU is too fast and too good in all aspects of the game. I look for OU to win by at least 27 points. Boomer Sooner!!!

Uh, yes, Mr. Kirby I can't only imagine TU slapping A&M around, but I saw it in '92 when TU took down #17 Texas A&M by a score of 35-34. Would just love to see Fran and his boys head up to Tulsa in seasons to come. The way A&M is playing (like the second-tier Big 12 South team they are) TU wouldn't pull away by more than 21 until the second half.

Stoops will have the Sooners ready! Their Defense will contain and overwhelm Tulsa until Stoops calls the dogs off. OU is too fast on Offense and if Bradford is on it will be a track meet. OU will not turn it over 5 times or have 14 penalties like the Y. They will get at least 50 but TU will get 21-24 pts.

I'll never understand why they bother to play these things when everyone is already so certain how it's going to turn out....here's a thought; let's just sit back and let the two teams decide and just enjoy the game for a change....
