Graham: Mistakes cost TU
OU’s Reggie Smith tears off Tarrion Adams’ helmet while attempting to tackle him on Friday. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

The New Tulsa World Sports Extra:
For the latest scores, stories, photos and stats on OU, OSU an TU football, as well as the rest of college football.
Tulsa needed breaks to defeat No. 4 Oklahoma and shake up the college football world on Friday night.
But mistakes brought down TU's upset hopes in a 62-21 loss before a sellout crowd at Chapman Stadium.
"Give Oklahoma a lot of credit, they are a great football team," TU coach Todd Graham said. "They were the better team tonight. We were disappointed. I thought we started off the way we wanted to start off, but we made too many mistakes."
Quarterback Paul Smith threw for 350 yards, but also had a pair of interceptions. Special teams also cost the Hurricane for the second straight week, as the Sooners had a kickoff return for a touchdown.
The injury bug hurt, and could be long-lasting, after starting cornerback Roy Roberts apparently injured a hamstring.
"It was a big problem (against OU)," Graham said. "We have a young guy come in, Jon Destin, and it was a tough game to come into and be a newcomer."
Tulsa (2-1) was far from the pain it felt at the final gun during the first quarter.
Roberts picked off OU quarterback Sam Bradford on the Sooners' first drive but injured his leg on the play.
Smith took over on offense and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Meyer to give TU a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter, silencing the partisan Oklahoma crowd.
OU bounced back, scoring three straight touchdowns to capture a 21-7 advantage.
TU linebacker Chris Chamberlain said OU's offense was "very talented and extremely big. They did a great job neutralizing us."
TU went to its deep threat to cut the lead to one score, when Smith connected with speedster Brennan Marion for a 48-yard TD pass in the second quarter.
Oklahoma followed with two more touchdowns against what looked like a fatigued TU defense and led 35-14 at halftime.
Graham told his team at intermission that the squad would receive the second-half kickoff and score, making it a 14-point game.
That happened, when a diving Smith covered 3 yards on a fourth-and-goal play to open the third quarter. TU's excitement lasted only 11 seconds.
DeMarco Murray, who scored three touchdowns, took the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a score.
"That absolutely broke our back," Graham said. "It deflated us there."
Smith, who was relieved by David Johnson midway through the fourth quarter, looked like he was trying to do too much at times. He was sacked five times.
"For the most part, the offensive line did good," Smith said. "A cou ple of times, I was holding onto the ball and scrambling a little early. A lot of times, I try to make something happen when I need to execute the offense."
The Hurricane will play its Conference USA opener against UAB in a week.
"It's a loss, but we're 2-1 and have a very good football team," Graham said. "We have to go back to work and regroup."

TU was obviously out-classed on every level. It would have taken a miracle for them to prevail, and miracles weren't happening last night. Coach Graham really needs to try to fix special teams and perhaps try to go to some man coverage on passes instead of zone so opposing quarterbacks don't pick the secondary apart. Tackleing was horrendous, so work on fundamentals seems to be in order. Paul Smith was great, as usual - but he's only one man. OU proved to me that they are a top-five team and should sail through the big 12 unless they get complacent. TU also proved that with some work, no one in C-Usa is at their level and could sweep the rest of the season. GO TU RazorCane

Right, coach... "better team tonight", "mistakes", "disappointed" ... as if you could have won. It was 62 - 21!! Face it. Take it. Move on.

TU may have been outclassed in football, but academics is another story. OU 108<TU in the top 100! All OU is cheaters and a farm team for tahe NFL! Did the OU players drive their loaner cars from Big Red Auto Sales to Tulsa?
Go TU for what a university is supposed to be for! TU best academic school in state!

I'm so ashamed that a little innocent 5 yr old girl playing in her Oklahoma, firefly, frogs jumping, yard is violently grabbed and stuffed into a car, stripped of her clothes going down the road, brutally raped, penetrated while she was probalbly screaming for her mother, and these are the most "popular stories" on the Tulsa World. A freaking stupid football story.
People need to wake up.

Roads are falling apart, bridges coming down over our heads, schools in shambles, Oklahoma makes the top of all the lists we DON'T want to be on...but hey! We have a #1 college football team! Pathetic.

We don't have a #1 football team. Tu is up against some darn good competition in the Conf. USA with So. Miss, Houston and now Central Fla.I liked ESPN's announcers for pointing out that TU has more native Oklahomans on its roster than OU. Ou's freshman QB looked like one even though little pressure was applied. He could strengthen within a very weak "Big" 12, but that may not be enough to save OU if they win out and have to play LSU, Fla or USC or a couple of other teams that could offensively put them on their rear ends. Face it, a team that spends/earns more on football in a year than TU does in 10 or 15 is always going to have bigger and faster athletes (I always admired Barry Switzer's honesty for calling them "my football players" never "student athletes"). OU doesn't recruit as much as it culls.

I think this matchup is for Money Making purposes only. It's like sending Union or Jenks to play Berryhill!! No way the little guys can win but the stadium will be full......And that's what I'd like to comment on.......I'd never been to an OU game. I was so offended by the behavior of the Big Red Fans......Drunken, Cussing, Obnoxious Jerks!! And what they did at the end of the National Anthem..........Totally disrespectful. With thousands of our young men and women serving our country in foreign lands trying to protect the freedom we enjoy, how could show such disrespect as to change the last word of F. Scott Keys great poem from "Brave" to "Sooner"!! But, this is America....the only country in the world where one can get away with such behavior. Kind of ironic, isn't it??

I am an OSU fan, but it is great to watch TU play football. The TU team has come a long way to get where they are. I don't care who beats OU. Wish it could have been TU. Go TU.
