Updated: Gundy: "Wish I would have said more."
By Staff Reports
Published:

Last Modified: 9/24/2007 7:11 PM
Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy said Monday that his office has received calls and e-mails of support about his postgame tirade directed at a newspaper reporter.
When asked Monday on the weekly Big 12 coaches teleconference if he had any regrets about what he said, Gundy replied:
“No. Wish I would have said more.”
Gundy said he hasn’t read or received those messages of support, but he’s been told about them by his secretaries. Gundy was angry about a column written by The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson in Saturday’s editions of the Oklahoma City paper. The column was about recently demoted quarterback Bobby Reid and possible reasons why he was demoted.
Gundy made his statements about the article during the press conference after OSU’s 49-45 win over Texas Tech.
Gundy held his weekly media conference Monday afternoon in Stillwater. During the press conference, Gundy responded to more questions about the tirade.
Several minutes into Monday's press conference, there was an exchange involving Carlson and Gundy:
Carlson: ``We have a policy at our paper of reporting errors. You said three-fourths of that column was (erroneous). Could you elaborate on that?''
Gundy: ``I don't have to."
Carlson: ``I can't report errors unless I know what they are."
Gundy: ``I'd rather just let it go, you know."
Gundy commented on Reid, who had made 20 consecutive starts before Zac Robinson recently was promoted to the No. 1 job. On Saturday, Robinson led the Cowboys to a 49-45 Big 12 triumph over Texas Tech.
Gundy on Reid: ``Bobby went through a difficult time because for the first time in his life, he wasn't the guy. We've had discussions with him about it. It's no different with Bobby or any other player on any position -- if you were a starter and now you're not a starter, you never know when you could be back in the game. You try to get ready to play."

Despite the fact I think Gundy probably had a little bit of an alterior motive, I think what he did was great. I also think that he knew his program (and subsequently his job) has its back against the wall after a lackluster start to the season. And heck...as far as Jenny Carlson goes....if you can't stand the heat???

Pathetic and embarrassing is how I would describe the behavior of the "professional" coach in his tantrum. To use a post-game interview to single out a columnist who you disagree with, tells me perhaps she hit too close to home. To an armchair psychologist, it appears Gundy was using Carlson as a scapegoat for his own ineptness as a coach. Gundy has been totally dishonest with the fans as to how the Q-back situation developed. Carlson's piece was a peephole into the goings on at Zero-State. I'm sorry, but an 18 year old eating out of the hand of his mommy is not only bizarre, but telling indeed. Gundy, thou dost protest too much (and next time, please don't do it in such a way that embarrasses the entire state!).

I for one was glad to see that Mike has some emotion about something. If you look at him during a game, he shows no emotion and looks like he is completely out of place. I think he is a decnt enough coach for where the program is right now and am hopeful that he can take us to a level higher than a mid-tier team in the Big 12. These journalists, if that is what you would call this one, are a sad excuse for human beings. What ever happened to just reporting what happened in the game and leaing all the conjecture and speculation to the coaching staff. I guess that is just too much to ask....

It is sad that "Bob" has to call in and try to tear down the man even when he is trying to stand-up for one of his kids. It is apparent that "Bob" is not a fan of OKLAHOMA STATE and is using this as a way to make himself feel good by doing the same thing the journalist did - that of tearing someone else down. I susspect that good-hearted people that are tired of the media creating stories don't feel that Mike embarrased the whole state. Mr. Stoops at the Holy Grail of State Institutions agreed with Mike, so I guess Bob should check his distaste for another state school long enough to see that the message was a good one. "Bob", you are the one that is pathetic and emabarrassing.

By the way, that child is 21. In some parts of the country, 21-year olds are adults.

I read her article on Saturday, and wonder where she got her facts from, if they were wrong. Did she just make up the story about the coach not wanting him in? If he made some remark about he, he needs to own it. As for all the rest of her article, she doesn't need to knock the guy for eating chicken from his mom's hand. Absolutely nothing wrong with it; it was a mean spirited jibe. Some moms insist on feeding you and it's kind of a favor to let her do it, since it makes her feel needed and loved. Wish my mom were still around to feed me chicken...

God bless the children! I for one feel that publishing scores and statistics is a bit distasteful. BTW, how much is being dumped into the sports program?

Bob made excellent points. This leader of his team has lost control and focus. I' m glad he doesn't coach our team. Gundy keeps fanning the flames when he should be looking for a defensive COORDINATOR. This young writer is not the problem but may be real close to exposing one if you'll watch.

I bet Bob doesn't have a son who plays teams sports.. or one with a supportive mother. I wonder how Bob's mom raised him....

I think Mike Gundy may been a bit over the top by allowing his frustrations of Jenni Carlson to be aired out at a post game press conference. Not really the time or the place. He makes good points however, and they couldn't have been directed at a more deserving journalist. She is awful!

I'll be straight with you; I'm an OU fan, and like most OU fans, haven't been impressed with Mike Gundy. Many say he lacks emotion on the field, which leads one to believe he lacks it in the locker room and in practice. However, it is nice to see someone stand up for one of their kids. While I think he could have handled this a little more professionally, you have to give him kudos for trying to protect the players.

Since when is a 21 year old man a kid? Playing football apparently has retarded his maturation process. When I was 21 I had already been in the Army two years and certainly did not consider myself to be a kid. That would be as embarrassing as being fed chicken by your mother. If this is how playing team sports prepares you for adult life I am certainly glad I never played. And, for a person who claims to never read the newspaper, coach Gundy certainly knew a lot about that article.

Yep... I was right all along... Football retards the mind. It turns 21 year old men into big bodied toddlers unable to take accept anything critical unless its followed up by a coach patting their butt.

Get over it, for those who are not Orange to the bone. You don't have a dog in the fight unless you are a relative or a friend of Jenni's; everyone should realize Gundy blasted the type of reporting not the reporter. For those who know that Stoops walks on water, he supported Gundy (Players get box lunches after games and stop to sign autographs etc. at least his mom was considerate enough to feed him when he was probably being fan friendly.(speculation)

I am glad Mike Gundy stood up for his player. The bottom line is that if the writers can report false information and put down college football players, then Gundy can use the same freedom and rant and rave all he wants. FREEDOM OF SPEECH

I say good for Gundy. i love the OU fans who just wait for the OSU article to bash the pokes. If Bob Stoops had done the same thing I bet BOb and UGA fan would kissing his _ _ _.
I don't know how many of you guys have college age kids but most still live at home, get a majority of their support fromMom and Dad just like Bobby Reid. Who don't you guys find someone better to put down like law makers, or other people who get paid to do the stupid things they do.

If what was written about Reid was in fact "fiction," then Gundy had a duty to set the record straight. Jenni Carlson is a hack and it is no surprise that she writes for a newspaper that makes better toilet paper than reading material. If you don't believe me, google "worst newspaper in America."

Gundy had every right to say the things he did, and I'm behind him all the way! I think most who know the situation are behind him as well. I also have to agree with him when he said, "Wish I would have said more."
Now I have a question: Was this the reporter's attempt at trying to reach the top in the media world? If so then you should probably find another career because I'll never read another one of your articles, and I know many people who feel the same way!

Support your players but don't be a spectacle. The media loves to get a rise out of coaches and Mike rose to the bait. The best thing he could have done would have been to treat the article with humorous sarcasm and pointedly ignored her and her paper for the rest of the season.Best advice, read the Tulsa World.

In regards to what Coach Gundy said after the game yesterday, if the paper article said what he said it did, why shouldn't he be respond to it. Newspapers and News Media are nothing but antagonists, they love to keep things going. If an out of state newspaper or news channel had responded to this, id be aggrivated. But when our own oklahoma papers and news medias cover it, it is pathetic. Are ratings really that important.

News Papers are not as concerned about facts as they are about the bottom line. More people should take them to task over what they print. It is easy to sit back and criticize when you are not the one taking the heat. Let the Media take some heat and they cry fowl.

I continue to be amazed at the poor example of writing Jenni Carlson has shown. What has happened in this event was well overdue. The Oklahoman press (and The World as well) should take note of this. Readers are getting tired of having to filter out most of the content (the writer's arrogance) to get a few morsels of real news. I, for one, consider this the last straw. I'll be stopping my subscription to The Oklahoman. If you want to make a statement, the only way to get their attention is to hit them in their bottom line.
I support Mike Gundy's statement. Yes, he might have been better off approaching the issue in a more diplomatic way. However, this is how he chose to deal with it. She deserved it! So do a few others.

I read and have heard, that gundy doesn't "have to explain the inaccuracies". That translation is easy---I need to cover my lousy coaching job with a tirade against someone who isn't responsible. When are the ags going to realize gundy is a sham coach? He has been less than truthful with the reporters, and apparently doesn't know when to shut up.

MIKE GUNDY IS AMAZING BLAH BLAH BLAH. Give me a break people! Its called grandstanding! Whats Gundy gonna do when a ref makes a call against one of his players? "There just kids, your criticizing kids and its GARBAGE!!!!" LOL! If OSU wants to go big time its coach and players need to get thicker skin. OU and Texas get crap FAR WORSE written about them and you'll never see Stoops or Brown loose it like that. And didn't Carlson ask him to point out what was false about the article and he REFUSED?? Oh please, Gumby GROW A PAIR and if your going to make accusations you better man up and answer to them. Have fun with you 3-9 season Pokes!
PS: I will admit that Gumby's hair during the tirade looked FAAAAAABOLOUS!!!!
