Bobby Reid's mother discusses column
By MATT DOYLE World Sports Writer
Published:
9/27/2007 12:09 AM
Last Modified: 9/27/2007 2:21 PM
Read Jenni Carlson’s column that started it all:
Reid is still the most talented signal-caller, but attitude is reason for change
Watch the video of Mike Gundy’s press conference when he confronted Carlson.
From the Picker’s blog:
“But don't get personal with a kid; therefore Gundy was right to stand up for his player. The way he did it, screaming at a woman as though about to charge, was wrong, though.”
From Sports Editor Mike Strain's blog:
“I think it’s admirable he would defend his player. But Gundy's emotions got the best of him, and passion turned to fury.”
The latest on this story:
Gundy: "Wish I would have said more."
Read ESPN's article:
Coaches Losing It
The mother of Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid said she was sickened by the way her son was portrayed in last week's controversial column in an Oklahoma City newspaper.
In an interview with Houston television station KTRK that was broadcast Wednesday night, Rajika Reid said she could not believe that Oklahoman columnist Jenni Carlson was "making this attack towards myself and my son," with her article.
"To come at him the way they did and to belittle him, it sickens him and it sickens me, as well," Rajika Reid told the television station.
Bobby Reid has turned down repeated interview requests from the Tulsa World in the last week.
Carlson and The Oklahoman have said repeatedly that they stand by the story published last Saturday.
Rajika Reid said she is questioning the column because Carlson did not attend the Sept. 14 game at Troy. Some observations that were part of the story took place after that game.
Reid took particular exception to how The Oklahoman writer described her feeding the OSU quarterback a piece of chicken after the game before he boarded the team bus.
"It's a lie. I'm like, no, this didn't happen," said Rajika Reid. "It's not true what she said about me feeding my son chicken."
According to a source in the OSU program, Rajika Reid did attend the game at Troy.
OSU coach Mike Gundy could not be reached for comment. Gundy used his entire postgame press conference after last Saturday's victory over Texas Tech to angrily address his displeasure with Carlson and what he deemed as inaccuracies in her column.
At his weekly press conference Monday, Carlson asked Gundy what was incorrect in the story. Gundy responded that he did not have to say what was wrong with the column. Carlson asked a follow-up question to the coach, saying she could not report errors unless she knew what they were.
"I don't have to," Gundy repeated again. "I'd rather just let it go."

So much for Carlson's "facts".
This just proves what lengths the Daily OUklahoma will go through to create news.
Shoddy journalism, printing rumors and complete and total lies.
I hope Mrs. Reid sues Carlson, her editor and the Jokelahoman for all they're worth --- which can't be much.
Thank God the Tulsa World has retained it's integrity in reporting a story.
The Oklahoman is a tabloid joke -- that's not funny.

Chickengate? I thought her article had a manufactured quality to it. But the issue doesn't deserve a lawsuit, or much more publicity at all.

Self creating news. The press love it, and they will always support each other. No matter how bad the story is told. It is sad that they can't take extra effort to get all sides of the story, and if they can't then let it go. Maybe the Oklahoman has to many reporters on there staff.
Final last words:
"back stories told"
"word is"
"almost see"

Just what part of what Mike had to say Saturday are you in the media missing?
When Carlson stated that Bobby threatened to leave OSU in 2005 he leveraged that to get the starting QB job, Mike said it "did not happen".
When insinuating that Bobby had an attitude, Mike stated that all Bobby has done is go to classe handle this situation with maturity and he has not shown any kind of attitude towards the coaches and his team mates. He has been very supportive of Zac.
Last and not least, Jenni claims she is upset that someone questions her integrity, I guess it was alright to question Bobby's integrity, but how dare anyone question a reporter who has contrived a story.
Just in case you wondered I have sources and I stand by my facts and if that doesn't work, I can always just claim its an opinion piece.

When is the media going to drop this story???? Writer writes story, coach freaks out...end of story. I guess this thing will be dragged out until we quit watching the news or reading newspapers.

Just let it go!! IF anyone needs to be critizied, it's Gundy. If he showed as much passion about losing as he did in his post game conference, our team may become passionate about winning. Yes, I am a OState fan. He showed no emotion when we got our butts handed to us by Troy, of all teams. Also, since Boone loves to brag about how much money he gives, and apparently, that gives him the right to be on the sidlines and call the shots with the athletic program, why doesn't he buy a newspaper. The Daily T Boone Pickens.

#5, I am with you, whats done is done, move on.... but, it won't. You will hear about it forever. News, newspapers, reporters & commentators, that is all they will find to talk about. Its not only in football its in all sports, some of the questions they ask. Have you ever heard someone say..."Oh I think we had a wonderful loss today and we are looking forward to losing next week, can't wait".
Instead of a halftime game report, I would like to see the band. You know the people that cheer their team on. Play music when their team makes a touchdown. They are more entertaining than the news media.

Gundy's rant made the national news and the cheesy entertainment news. It was a worthy rant and should make any ambitious girl or boy reporter think twice before telling readers that Gundy's players need to be fed by their mothers. Horrors! I wish my mom were still around to feed me chicken:(

Jenni needs to be fired. I'm sick of the media. I'm proud of Gundy for standing up for his players. The newspaper should ask for forgiveness and Jenni needs to find another job. Sports should uplift our young people and encourage them to live better lives. We don't need Jenni trashing our young people in the public. There are plenty of other stories about hard working athletes we would all enjoy reading. I'll never buy or read that paper again ever. It's TRASH.

The editors who approved Jenni's article should resign immediately after FIRING HER!
I agree with Gundy 100%. Rajika should sue Carlson, maybe that will help her when she thinks to CREATE another story. If I was a Oklahoma resident I would have canceled my subscription already!

I would think that Gundy would have better used his post game press conference to talk about his first win of the season. Could it be that he just didn't want to talk about his miserable season?

Response to the Twisted Reporter & the Loving Mom & Son
An oversupply of played out hatred and cruelty permeate humanity. In contrast, we suffer from a shortage of demonstrated love. A beautiful sight is a mother feeding her grown son chicken during a football break.
One reporter revealed her own twisted psyche as she railed against such beauty. Said reporter cried out that her facts were accurate. Of course they were accurate. Rumor says so. Her twisted ATTITUDE is what became the focus of expressed disgust. Men and boys are under enough pressure to be “unreal” with themselves.
How sad our world if such a healthy love is suppressed. Hooray for the coach.
We have the choice to celebrate love. I would love it, love it, love it if mothers, fathers, spouses and children came in celebration of love to their loved one’s next sporting event and fed them chicken-- or some other favorite “pick me up.” Just once. Once to say to any other twisted psyches out there that grown children still treasure the warmth of family love.
But of course, you know the rest of the story. Reporters report IT.
It’s nice to create memories of loving moments.
Sincerely,
Cairn Idun Tucson AZ

Gundy is free to criticize reporters for their stories, but he became too personal when he said the reporter must be childless. He wouldn't have talked that way if the article had been written by a male reporter. There was some misogyny in his rant, as if to imply that a woman has no right to criticize, since he would not say exactly what he objected to. This is my gut feeling after hearing and seeing his rant. I didn't like her article either, but he got a little too worked up over it.

Answer: when Jenni Carlson makes a public apology to Bobby Reid and his mother for her "hit piece" article.

The Daily Oklahoman sure knows how to sell more newspapers for the Tulsa World. Thanks, Matt Doyle, for giving this reader a choice in sports writers.
