Will OU put end to Fran?

Playing college football teams from the state of Oklahoma this season can be hazardous to the health of one's career.

To whit:

  • One day after Texas Tech gave up 49 points and lost at Oklahoma State, Red Raiders' defensive coordinator Lyle Setencich became the scapegoat when he lost his job.
  • Two days after OSU won at Nebraska for the first time in 47 years, overbearing Cornhuskers' athletic director Steve Pederson was fired.
  • One day after a loss at Tulsa guaranteed a losing season and no bowl game for Southern Methodist, beleaguered Mustangs' coach Phil Bennett was fired.

Whew. That was just in September and October.

Now comes the month every coach on a hot seat dreads. With the regular season winding down, a lot of coaches realize all the optimism that reigned when camp opened in August was merely false hope.

Much of the focus this first weekend of November will be on Oklahoma. Will OU join the career-killing, in-state trend by helping speed up the inevitable end to Dennis Franchione's tenure at Texas A&M by posting a convincing win over the Aggies?

Franchione has been a dead coach walking ever since an A&M booster leaked word to a San Antonio newspaper about the VIP Connection, a secret, pay-for-insider information newsletter Franchione was sending to some of A&M's Big Cigars.

It seemingly reached the point that the only question remaining is if A&M athletic director Bill Byrne will allow Franchione to finish the season or make angry A&M supporters happy by pulling the plug early.

In his first visit to OU's Memorial Stadium as A&M's coach in 2003, Franchione left town a 77-0 loser. If the Aggies endured a similar beating by the Sooners, those Big A&M Cigars would undoubtedly demand that Byrne fire Coach VIP ASAP.

In the latest newsletter that he posts (for free) each Wednesday on A&M's athletic department Web site, Byrne acknowledged that he received "many" e-mails questioning the football program's future after the Aggies' lost at home last Saturday to Kansas.

"I'm disappointed, like you, our players, coaches and staff, that we did not win the game," Byrne wrote. "But, you have to give Kansas credit. Having said that, we have another big game in Norman this Saturday and I'll be there yelling for my Aggies."

Franchione didn't draw a mention in Byrne's message, which included a plea to A&M fans to continue showing their support to the players.

A veteran in the AD business, Byrne knows the wisdom in not letting a situation like Franchione's continue to linger. The sooner he goes public with a decision about his coach's future, the quicker he can openly launch his search for Franchione's successor.

Texas A&M, 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 Conference, is already bowl eligible. With three games remaining, it's possible that the Aggies could win the league's South Division title and play for the Big 12 title in Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 1.

Some wonder if even that would be enough to convince Byrne to keep Franchione around after this season. The Aggies' embarrassed AD angrily admonished Franchione when he found out about the VIP newsletter, and that it possibly violated NCAA rules.

Byrne acknowledged that A&M was checking with attorneys to see if Franchione's failure to report income he made from the $1,200-a-year newsletter had violated his contract.

That sends a rather obvious signal that Byrne is looking for a way to avoid paying Franchione a whopping buyout when he fires him. Franchione's $2-million-a-year contract runs through the 2012 season.

It's highly doubtful that A&M will have a November to remember, not with games against No. 5 OU, No. 9 Missouri and No. 14 Texas. In his fifth season at A&M, Franchione has gone 3-10 the previous four Novembers, including 0-4 mark against OU.

Stoops and the Sooners undoubtedly can see the irony in the joke Franchione made at OU's expense last summer while speaking to a group of A&M boosters.

Talking about OU's quarterback situation at the Aug. 1 dinner in Houston, Franchione referenced the trouble OU ran into with the NCAA a year ago when two former players were found guilty of taking money for work not performed at a Norman automobile dealership.

"That (quarterback) may be the only question mark they have. . .other than what jobs they are going to work this year," Franchione said.

Three months later, OU has found a quarterback in redshirt freshman Sam Bradford, who might play a key role Saturday in helping hasten the end of Franchione's job.

If so, Franchione would join a growing list of folks who have learned this season that it's not wise to fool with teams from Oklahoma.

Franchione and the entire team talks too much. Fran's talking has never matched his walking. Howie Long of the Dallas Cowboys said it best, "Just shut up and play football. Just shut up."

I'm a 77 year-old Aggie and I am covinced many of our players are second rate and our coaching is non-existent. And I'm being very kind and compassionate. I love the kids. The coaches make me want to throw up.

Yes Franchione will get canned no matter what. But with regards to the end of your article....boy, that is a far stretch to say one cant mess with Oklahoma teams. Some way to connect the dots. I guess it was done to give the locals a rise.....

Fran has consistently proven that his decision making skills are very limited. Up to now he has done it on the football field, ie. OU at home last year. But now he has done it in his personal business. Like 2mil. a year is not enough, he has to also take a chance at losing his job and possible sanctions against the university so that he can pocket under $40k. What an embarassment to our fine University. I agree, he is gone irregardless of his next three games.

Lol... Fran is a crappy coach, dude... he's already fired. I wouldn't be too delighted that "when teams lose to Oklahoma schools... their coaches get fired". That's a bad thing for Oklahoma, knucklehead.

Perhaps the bigger story should be....

"why can't Oklahoma teams compete without 75% of their rosters being texas-bred athletes?!" It's quite pathetic, really.

Fran is a teacher. He is responsible for developing CHARACTER within his players. I define CHARACTER as doing what is right...when nobody is looking. (Thanks Dr. Rigsby - I'm sure I left part of it out)

When nobody is looking...Fran doesn't display and CHARACTER. He has CHARACTER...but low.

If he truly is a man of GOOD CHARACTER...he will not hold A&M liable to his contract. He has spent the entire year 'apologizing' for his mistakes. If these type of mistakes were made by players and/or other coaches, they would be fired or kick-off the team.

Fran should do the same...and kick himself off the team. Fran is a coward...and a person of NO CHARACTER.

Dennis Franchione will not be the head coach of football at Texas A&M after this season. EVEN IF he gets a dominating win (which I don't envision happening) at Owen Field, he'll get his pink slip come December (assuming A&M even gets a bowl bid).

When Fran is terminated, it will be because he has failed to meet any of the expectations laid out for him when he was hired; not because of the VIP Connection emails. In his time here A&M hasn’t finished better than third in the south division, won a bowl game, or finished in the top 25. He hasn’t even won half of his Big 12 games. The real nail in the coffin is the fact that he has piled up EMBARASSING losses one after another. The media doesn’t seem to understand that while the VIP Connection emails will have a lot to do with negotiating Fran’s buyout, it will have very little to do with his dismissal.

Hey Chunk, #5, isn't it more "pathetic" that 75% of the OU team would WANT to leave Texas and play for the Sooners than stay and play for the Aggies or Whorns?

Hey, #5 - take a geography class - Texas is BIG, Oklahoma is small. Texas has many, many more people than Oklahoma.

Duh.

Sittler, you are a moron. Coincidence does not equal cause. The Texas Tech defensive coordinator was not a "scapegoat," he just plain sucked (hence the Texas Tech defense has been way better since he left) and the Texas Tech defensive coordinator was not "fired" (he quit, so you should check your facts). Phil Bennett was fired because he promised his team would go to a bowl and now they are not bowl eligible (the fact that Bennett almost beat Tulsa had nothing to do with it 1 way or another).

Dennis Francione is already fired because of his years of bad coaching and illegal web site. Franchione can beat Oklahoma and would still be fired. However, everybody knows Oklahoma will win , which in your small mind will be why he is fired. Keep up the bad work Sittler.

HAHAHA, I got the laugh of the day with the "brave" Oklahoma comments trying to taunt Texans.

"Hey Chunk, #5, isn't it more "pathetic" that 75% of the OU team would WANT to leave Texas and play for the Sooners than stay and play for the Aggies or Whorns?"

And then he was pawned by the next comment (#15). With the exception of Jenks and Union, Oklahoma has much to be desired. Texas has about 8 times the population, and 5 times the size. Texas has better high schools, and more affluent areas. Naturally, not all Texans will stay in state, since it is so big. Oklahoma is a respected program, and thus, will receive valuable recruits. Texas is very well known for being arguably the best state for high school football.

Mike Gundy should stay at OSU, he represents the "class" Oklahomans have.

Coach Franchione is a liar and a con-man. He promised big-time success at A&M, but instead, has led the team to some rather humiliating losses (already 2 this year). He will be gone regardless of whether or not he "messed with Oklahoma teams" (haha).

Oklahoma has nothing on Texas.

It's funny that people from Texas always point out that there are players on OU's squad from Texas. But all of USC's kids aren't from California. All of LSU's kids aren't from Louisiana. I might just quit liking the Dallas Cowboys because the players aren't really cowboys. Oklahoma fans know that UT doesn't suck, A&M has underachieved, and alot of good players come from Texas. If Stoops never recruited from Texas, you'd be calling him stupid for not going after such talented players. And to Chuck from College Station: You're right. If teams fire coaches after losing to teams from Oklahoma, that's never good. It's like chanting, "OVER-RATED! OVER-RATED!" BOOMER SOONER FOREVER.

Hey Jared, "With the exception of Jenks and Union, Oklahoma has much to be desired." Are you saying Jenks and Union are lacking??

And then, "Oklahoma has nothing on Texas." If you'll remember, OU got a "W" on Texas. Maybe that's something.

Tom, I also am proud of our guys in uniform but Oklahoma and football go hand in hand! Stoops and Gundy are both great guys who coach great football teams. Good Luck to both of them on the rest of their seasons. Every time I read the comments your griping about someone. You should read the paper to inform yourself and for enjoyment. I'm sure you don't read Dear Abby so here's some advice...Move to a new state and get some much needed anger management help!!!
