Rice says it's sorry for insult

By ERIC BAILEY World Sports Writer

Read the script of a halftime performance of Rice's Marching Owls Band (the MOB) of Saturday's game with Tulsa.

The director of the Rice University band issued a public apology Tuesday for his group's halftime performance during Saturday's Tulsa-Rice football game.

The 10-minute show, titled "Todd Graham's Inferno," mocked the TU coach, who spent one season coaching at Rice before taking the Tulsa job. The "MOB" (Marching Owl Band) performed music and a skit that paralleled Dante's "Divine Comedy," and acted like it was searching for Graham.

It ended with the band's announcer calling Graham a "douche bag" over the Rice Stadium's public address system.

"I always apologize when people are upset. It's just what you owe people," Rice director Chuck Throckmorton said. "When you're being creative and putting something out there, you know what you meant. But as soon as it's out there, it belongs to the people who heard it; and, when it upsets them, you apologize."

Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham, who declined comment on Tuesday evening, said earlier this week that his school had issued a formal complaint with Conference USA regarding the show.

"The intent wasn't to be mean or insulting," Throckmorton said. "It was to poke fun and be funny. Since it came across different than that, then I certainly apologize."

Rice president David Leebron and athletic director

Chris Del Conte were unavailable for comment.

The show was scripted by students and approved by Throckmorton, who has spent the last six years as Rice's band director. The group is known for its satirical humor and mocking nature of opponents.

The show's script went through circles of Hell, with the band playing music and pictures shown on the stadium video board. The finale was when the group apparently found Graham in the 10th circle of Hell -- at the University of Tulsa.

The show ended with the announcer saying, "You know, that reminds me of a joke: A priest, a nun, and a rabbi walk into a bar. Now, I forgot how the rest of it went, but I think in the end Todd Graham is a douche bag."

Throckmorton said he was surprised at the reaction to the words "douche bag."

"It was sort of a mild insult . . . it was used to get the point across but not dirty," he said. "In all common usage I see, it's devoid of any literal meaning. I looked it up and it means someone that talks big about himself and that is a jerk.

"Going through the show writing process, I thought it was a mild vulgarity . . . Tulsa won the football game and still has their coach," he said. "This was his first time back since he left, and we gave him a rhetorical public flogging. Everyone expected it. It was as mild as we could make it with it still being funny."

CHUCK THROCKMORTON is a d-bag, Houston (11/28/2007 8:14:18 AM)
Here is a list of lies told by Chuck Throckmorton in this articl:

#1 I always apologize when people are upset.

#2 The intent wasn't to be mean or insulting.

#3 It was sort of a mild insult.

#4 It was used to get the point across but not dirty

#5 In all common usage I see, it's devoid of any literal meaning.

#6 Going through the show writing process, I thought it was a mild vulgarity.

#7 Everyone expected it.

#8 It was as mild as we could make it with it still being funny.

That is a ton of lies in such a short article. He knew exactly what he was doing. It wasn't "mild", nor was it "funny". Of course saying "douche bag" is dirty. Then he tries to get another slam in by saying "it means someone that talks big about himself and that is a jerk." OH THAT WAS AN APOLOGY? Really. Thanks, THROCK, now we know who the REAL D-BAG is!

We second Houston's comments!

What a crock - this was not an apology just another attempt to slam TU and TU's football coach. Apparently integrity is not valued at Rice University. This leaves us with a bad taste in our mouth for RICE.

MOB of Douche-Bags led by Throck the Crock is more like it.

This wasn't an apology at all. He says that it is all our fault for being insulted and implies that he did nothing wrong.

I'll see all of you at Chapman stadium next year when Rice comes to play. I'll be handing out douch-bags dressed up as little purple Rice Owls. You'll each get one to throttle in Throck's general direction. All in fun, right? No one should be insulted...

Here is a quote from Throckmorton:

All Tulsa Fans should realize that this was Todd Graham's first return visit to Rice. After the way he left here, he deserved a "public flogging."

I would have performed today's show even if Todd Graham had been standing in front of me the entire time -- so firmly do I believe that it was not "over the line." And had he been standing there, I firmly believe that Graham would have "taken it like a man" (and laughed at the surprisingly ridiculous "your mom" joke).

It's a pity that more people cannot "take it" in the same spirit. But don't worry...we're done with you (and him) now. By next year, we'll be concentrating on ridiculous politicians or re-enacting an epic pirates vs. ninjas battle.

Thanks,

Chuck Throckmorton

I really hope they don't actually plan on returning to the pirates vs. ninjas shows. Every now and then the MOB does an esoteric show that just goes over everyone's heads.

Here's hoping there's always enough absurdity in politics and university relations that the MOB has quality material for years to come.... and let's also hope they aren't reprimanded by PC-USA

What a classless jerk. This guy is an embarrassment to Rice. If I were associated with Rice, I would want this guy gone. He has the mentality of a 12 year old. It's sad when a supposed adult in his position doesn't know what's tasteful and funny from what is insulting and not at all funny to anyone over 15. I always believed Rice was a class university, but now I have to wonder.

Some poignant responses above by more yokels from Tulsa. A fine sign that Todd Graham is not the only douchebag - he coaches at a school that shall come to be renowned for its douchebaggery.

But really - Rice? A classy university? I'm not sure where you got that idea, but I'm glad you're rid of it. I've never heard of anyone from Rice being proud of going to a 'classy' university. Individualistic, creative, pioneers in scientific research, sure. Class? I think class gets shed with clothes for all the naked runs around campus, or dropped along with dignity during the drunken debauchery. I didn't go to Rice, but I have been to the bar that they have under their Chemistry hall. They're a premier university, but 'class' isn't a word I'd use to describe them.

Soooo, What the heck does the TU coach think about all this POOO? After all, he does know about the MOB and what they do. Ill bet he was expecting it. It would be nice to know if he thought it was funny or not.

How is any of the half-time idiotic representation by the band "FUNNY"? I'm not laughing, and I feel I have a great sense of humor. Creativity? Maybe they should have some out in costume; the southend of a northbound mule comes to mind!!!! I find your band repugnent, as a former "band member" at a collegiate school - BOO HISS.....You give school bands a BAD NAME!

Calling people nasty names is not funny at all. Civility should be promoted, not undermined. Yes, SNL thinks that they are cutting-edge because they use "big boy" words and the sophomoric mind of imitators, such as the Rice mob, follow suit. Don't worry many of them will leave that environment and grow up. Too bad the administration and faculty that allows such degradation of the human race will stay in that mire and have little chance of reaching maturity.

Tulsa Kid,

"degradation of the human race"?

A drawn out parody of Dante's Inferno, followed by a sophomoric insult at a man universally hated at Rice, is hardly degrading the human race.

Grow up, get a sense of humor, and learn that not every insult needs to be followed with: "Them boys insulted us. Let's git our pitchforks and show them who's the douchebag"

If my home town was having the reaction that Tulsa is having to this, I'd be embarrassed. It isn't the first time the MOB has insulted someone and it won't be the last. It wasn't vulgar, and the rest of the show was amusing. Get over it.
