Do people ever ask if you’re related to Betty?

“Not too much here. Usually they just call me ‘Betty Crocker.’ When I was little, they would ask if I was. I’d say, ‘Yeah, that’s my aunt.’ ”

Can you at least cook?

“I can cook some stuff that has directions. I don’t know if I can go to the store, buy a bunch of stuff and put it all together. I mean, whatever I make tastes good.”

What’s your signature dish?

“I can do cheeseburger Hamburger Helper. That tastes good. That’s a college person’s specialty. Get that meat, throw it together and you’re good.”

THE BREAKDOWN

Looking back

Coming off a deflating loss to Colorado, the Sooners needed a 2-0 week in the worst way. They got it, thanks to wins over Iowa State and Texas Tech in which a pair of guards emerged from their respective slumps. An assertive Tony Crocker scored 22 points behind a 10-for-10 showing at the free-throw line in OU’s 76-64 victory over Iowa State. Then, Austin Johnson established new career highs of 20 points and six 3-pointers in a 66-64 victory at Tech. Johnson was also the one who got the ball in David Godbold’s hands with five seconds to play in Lubbock, and watched with everybody else as Godbold’s 28-foot launch hit nothing but net.

The week ahead

Tuesday: vs. Baylor, 7 p.m.

Saturday: at Texas, 2:30 p.m.

The Sooners have never lost to Baylor since the Big 12 was formed. Baylor fell to OU in Waco on Jan. 26 when Blake Griffin emerged from a knee injury to stun the Bears with 17 points and 15 rebounds. It will be interesting to see how Scott Drew plans to stop Griffin.

Saturday in Austin, the Sooners must find an answer for D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams, something they didn’t have when the two guards shot Texas to a 64-54 victory in Norman on Feb. 6.

The big picture

How big was Godbold’s shot?

The biggest since Jeff Capel took over as OU coach. Capel’s nearly two-year reign has been marked by rough luck. When Godbold’s bomb hit dead center, the young coach had finally caught a break. If the shot misses, the Sooners fall to seventh place in the conference and outside the NCAA Tournament picture. Instead, they could tie Texas A&M for fourth place with a win over Baylor, and they can continue to harbor NCAA hopes.

Are the guards out of their hole?

They’re close. Crocker, Johnson and Cade Davis hit some shots to help beat Iowa State. Johnson answered the bell at Tech, and got some real help down the stretch from Crocker and Godbold to win a game in which Griffin struggled mightily.

How is Longar Longar coming along?

Another bit of good news for the Sooners: their senior center appears fine. He was a rusty 2-of-10 against Iowa State, but, more importantly, moved effectively and didn’t tire in 27 minutes. Longar scored 10 points in 28 minutes at Tech.
