OU Notebook: Granger update
By JOHN E. HOOVER World Sports Writer
Published:
3/9/2008 1:34 AM
Last Modified: 3/9/2008 1:34 AM
OU coach Bob Stoops said defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger was "working on" returning to the team's good graces. Granger was arrested two days before the Fiesta Bowl and suspended from the game after a shoplifting arrest in Tempe, Ariz.
"He still has to be consistent through the spring and summer," Stoops said, "but the things he's done here since have been positive."
Harris
out:
Senior-to-be Nic Harris, last year's starting free safety, will miss all of the spring because of minor offseason shoulder surgery.
"He won't be in there, but Nic has played a lot of football and he'll be back and fine once the summer comes," Stoops said.
Reed's
story:
Stoops offi cially said on Tuesday that Mike Reed, a five-star junior college linebacker last season, is no longer on the team.
"I'm never specific on things that aren't positive," Stoops said. "In the end, there are too many team-related and academic-related activities that are not being met. So therefore, he is not going to be with us during the spring and he will seek other opportunities at the end of the semester."
Holmes
back:
Stoops said Lendy Holmes, one of three defensive starters unable to participate in the Fiesta Bowl because of academic shortcomings, is practicing with the team. He has started the spring at free safety as Dominique Franks and Brian Jackson get as much work as they can at cornerback. But Holmes, Stoops said, can always switch to corner if he's needed.
"He can do either," Stoops said. "That'll depend on who we get the best play from from the other guys. I think Lendy has the unusual ability really to be solid at corner or at safety."
Linebacker
story:
The first two spring practices had junior-to-be Ryan Reynolds replacing Curtis Lofton at middle linebacker. Taking Reynolds' place on the weak side is redshirt freshman Austin Box, and stepping in for departed senior Lewis Baker is converted safety Keenan Clayton. Their backups are Brandon Crow in the middle, Travis Lewis at weakside and Lamont Robinson at strongside.
New
fan:
The newest Sooner fan is Hannah Cindyann Heupel, born Feb. 27 to Josh and Dawn Heupel.
"It really is going pretty good," Josh Heupel said. "She was a little girl, came out 5 pounds 12 ounces. But she's doing good. She just had her first doctor's appointment and she's over 6 pounds already."
Missing
Malcolm:
After his big performance in the Fiesta Bowl, Quentin Chaney gets first dibs on replacing Malcolm Kelly. Adron Tennell will get a shot this spring, too. In the fall, newcomers will be in the mix.
"It was different not having (Kelly) out there and not having that big target," quarterback Sam Bradford said. "But we've still got a lot of talented wide receivers out there. With Quentin out there and Manny (Manuel Johnson) and Wick (Juaquin Iglesias) out there, it was still pretty normal.
"It's definitely important to have someone come out in the spring and step up and show that they can make plays, try to make the plays that Malcolm made for us. But its a long process."

I notice Stoops says he is never specific on things that aren't positive! He proves that with his comment that with his comment that"DeMarcus Granger is working on returning to the teams good graces!" What kind of BS is that! If. he in fact is guilty of stealing a coat from a store in Phoenix.(He didn't return to Phoenix for his court appearance), why is Stoops even considering letting him return to the team. Excuse me, but I thought Stoops considered character and honesty important for his players?.....or is it, if he plays well enough, we will make an exception! Sad, sad, sad!

This is reference to the comments that Mr. Lee made. Before you make statements like that, you need to do your research. "If he plays well enough, we will make an exception!" Its obvious you don't follow OU football cause if you did, you would remember a starting QB and offensive lineman that was kicked off the team for NCAAA violations. Also, if he didn't care about what his players do, then Granger would've got to play in the Fiesta Bowl. NOT SENT HOME THE VERY NEXT DAY!!!!! Now if you want to get on the subject of coaches considering character and honesty, why don't you talk about Les Miles and the Perilloux situation. He has violated team rules what 3 times in the short period he has been there. What about Pete Carroll and the Reggie Bush case? Regardless of what you or anyone else thinks, These are still young men that are going to make mistakes. Some worse than others. So why would any coach go public with negative comments? Their crime is already made puble. There is no reason for their coach to kick them while they are down. The more severe the incident, the more severe the punishment. If you stole an inkpen or even accidentally took safety glasses home from work, should you be fired for doing so or should an exception be made?

You are a jerk and in serious need of a psychiatric evaluation!

Given the lenghty roster of arrested players over the last few years at your school: OSU, aren't you the 'pot calling the kettle black'?

WCO, do you just assume he is an OSU fan? You must be pretty smart!
And lets go over the "lenghty" list shall we?
1) Pettigrew
2) Collins
3) ?????
Man, that is alot of players! You are right!
OU players arrested in last year:
1)Broyles
2)Granger
3)Jarboe
Anyways, you wanted the info, so you got it. But don't assume because some moron is talking on a message board that he is an OSU fan. The Sooners don't have alot of friends in the Big 12 or nataionally.

Yea, you're right, OU players are real hard criminals.....stealing a tank of gas? stealing a coat? ----- from what I have read, this pales in comparison to UT players being caught with 2lbs of weed & shotguns and OSU players raping 12 yr old girls. It appears to me that OSU & UT fans can't wait to hear of some OU player committing a misdemeanor so they can divert the attention of their own players. Sad.....Sad.....Sad

Sorry Dan, but sending a kid home and not letting him play in the Fiesta Bowl is not addressing the real crime that was committed by Granger. He was arrested and allowed to leave and return home.......but as a memeber of the Sooner team, he not only violated their rules he violated the rules of law, or if you wish, God's law, "Thou shall not steal". Then to cap it off he isn't even responsible enought to show in court for his hearing. Hey, let him play and then move on to the pros one day, then he might even become another Michael Vick! P.S., I'm also an OU graduate. Just a guy who doesn't believe in lying, cheating and "stealing!"

TWS, you know so much about OSU, dont you? I didn't know rapists get 10 years of probation, did you?
Oh, thats right, it wasn't called rape. It was sexual assult. Not to justify it, but wow, at least know what your talking about.
Pettigrews will be dropped, and you have no idea what really went on in that situation. He didn't intentionally steal gas, a coat, or bring a weapon to his school. That is reserved for morons. But keep justifying it, my good man.
Is having a weapon on campus a misdemeanor? Nope. Is shoplifting a misdemenor? Depends on what they are stealing. You are just changing facts and the stories to make your argument, and it does not work for people who have a clue. You should try to get one sometime. Sad. Sad. Sad.

Both schools have their issues, I don't think either OU nor OSU has a justified right to give the other school crap about players.
TWS, you can't really be comparing which crime is worse to justify you argument, can you? That is pretty sad.
Both schools have issues. Enough said.

Actually every school has issues, No school is granted immunity from kids acting like idgits, and no amount of teaching, parenting, or coaching would stop all of it.

It doesn't matter what kind of criminal background or moral character the guy has as long as he can play football. Afterall, it is Outlaw U, where the lawbreaker recruits and players are the norm!! And they all added, "OU sucks sewer water!!!"

Wow, must have taken you all day to find that info!
Please, please don't make the OSU people look up the OU football/basketball players from the past. It will get ugly real quick.
But, I am glad that made you feel better for a short time.

Actually Tom (#14), it took less than 3 minutes. These are just the names off the top of my head. If you want to list the OU idiots then please be my guest. The point I want to make basically echoes what #12 has posted. This garbage happens everywhere, just read the national sports headlines. It happens at Oklahoma and I wanted to remind some of the OSU crowd that it happens at OSU, too. I keep reading all this vile hatred from many OSU fans about some idiot who stole a jacket and another fool who allegedly stole a tank of gas and somehow OU is now the most crooked university on the planet with the most crooked coaches, administration, players, students and fans. My post was not about who has the most or the worst, it's just a reminder that fans are bickering back and forth over a subject that unfortunately happens at both universities.

You guys don't know what criminality is!! You otta be in the Big 10.We have attempted murderers and child molestation charges pending. Every conference has their share of punks like the Big 12.Soundses to me like both parties ought to be glad they aren't closer to Dallas than you are. Hell, they'd all be in jail. I get a kick out of your message board. Both are great schools with fans with ego's bigger than Texas. OU will always be better than OSU in football and OSU will always be better in Golf and Wresling. Just facts from a non fan of both. I love your state and most all the people that I have met from there. Thank God you have great people in your state that don't get caught up in your silly bickering. The term "Sooner" in reality, from an outsiders point of view, refers to the state and ALL of it's people,so lets not get to critical of each other!! Ex native, and very proud of that!! And NO!! I.m not a Tulsa fan either.

#6 - You listed Jarboe as an OU player arrested.
Jarboe is NOT an OU player.
He is not enrolled at the University of Oklahoma.
Jarboe is in Georgia
and has not yet even graduated high school.
