Former Sooner QB Tommy Grady returns for Oklahoma's pro day
By JOHN E. HOOVER World Sports Writer

NORMAN -- Tommy Grady took even his old Sooner teammates by surprise when he showed up Tuesday at OU's pro day.
"It was crazy to see him," said former Sooner Travis Wilson, a Cleveland Browns wide receiver who watched his ex-teammates work out for NFL scouts. "When I first walked in here, I looked and had to look back."
Grady left OU shortly before the 2005 season, bowing out of a quarterback race with Rhett Bomar and Paul Thompson. He transferred to Utah, where he redshirted a year, then, after a coaching change, mostly rode the bench. But he played enough for NFL scouts to want a closer look.
On Monday he worked out for 13 scouts at Utah; on Tuesday more than 20 teams (roughly 60 scouts) saw him. OU coach Bob Stoops welcomed Grady back.
"We didn't have a quarterback to throw (for pass receiving drills), so that worked out good," Stoops said. "Tommy asked to come back and do some things, so it worked out good for him and for us."
At OU, Grady was 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds. Now he's 6-6 and 245, with bulging muscles. Almost all his passes were virtually perfect.
"Tommy's got an arm on him," said running back Allen Patrick. "He came out here and threw some pretty good balls today."
Grady said he immediately doubted his decision to leave OU -- particularly in light of OU's quarterback situations the last three preseasons.
"I regret leaving this place," he said. "Like
coach (Chuck) Long said, it's not always greener on the other side. I was looking forward to leaving, but when I left, I was wishing I had stayed here.
"I think I could have stuck it out. Coach Long was kind of telling me that, because they had Paul and Rhett at the time, he told me I wasn't going to be able to compete in the fall. So I thought Rhett was going to come in and do a good job. He did good, but he had his thing going on. I regret leaving, but I try not to look back too much."

If Chuck told him he cuold not compete, even in a roundabout way then good Riddance to Long... who cares what he did while he was here..

lack of heart! A little competion comes along and instead of fighting he quits. But if Chuck "third and" Long told Grady that he wouldn't be able to compete then Long is a moron.

My goodness, if there is any school in this country that can attest to "you never know when you get the nod" it's OU. I'm really suprised the coaching staff didn't do a better job of getting Tommy to stay. Let's look back at OU QB's who got "thrown in the fire".
1974 - Steve Davis - went from 3rd string to 1st string, due to injuries.
1982 - Kelly Phelps - went to first string, from injuries.
1985 - Aikman goes down - in comes Holieway.
1987 - Holieway goes down - in comes Thompson
2002 - Jason White.....enough said
2006 - Bomar gets booted....in comes Thompson.
Out of those six scenarios....I thin there worst season was 4 losses (1982). But they beat Texas :)
Best of luck Tommy.....I hope an NFL team gives you a shot.

How much of an impression did Stoops leave on Grady that he (Grady) would ask to come back and throw some? Sounds like Stoops makes a little difference in some of these kids. As good as Thompson was, and no offense to him, but I would have liked to see what Grady would have done in Norman.

John,
Nice, interesting article.
I am Tommys agent and wanted to let you know that he has a Mini Camp Tryout with the Cleveland Browns.
If you are interested in more details, feel free to contact me via email.
Thanks.
