Kansas’ Russell Robinson (left) celebrates at the end of the Jayhawks’ semifinal win over North Carolina Saturday at the Final Four. MARK HUMPHREY / Associated Press

Future turns to gold for KU coach
SAN ANTONIO -- The price of doing business with Bill Self just went up.
Big time.
Kansas 84, North Carolina 66.
Saturday night's stunning Final Four victory by Self's KU team over the favored Tar Heels is bound to drive up Self's asking price when he gets around to talking about a new contract at season's end.
And KU won't be the only one asking (begging?) Self to coach its basketball team next season.
Several sources have confirmed that Oklahoma State officials are prepared to offer Self some big-time bucks in an attempt to entice him to return to coach at his alma mater.
If some reports are even close to being accurate, we're talking funny money here. The latest rumor to surface in coaching circles this weekend was that OSU plans to toss a $6 million signing bonus on the table if it can get Self to agree to a contract that reportedly could pay him at least $3.5 million per season.
Now remember, those were the numbers that were being tossed around BEFORE KU's win over the Tar Heels, which vaulted KU into Monday's night's championship game against Memphis, which defeated UCLA in the first game at the Alamodome.
The victory is bound to turn Self into a cult hero for KU fans for one reason -- he defeated North Carolina's Roy Williams, the coach who angered Jayhawks' supporters five years ago when he left after 15 seasons to coach at his alma mater.
Saturday night's victory before 43,718 spectators at the Alamodome is going to put intense pressure on KU athletic director Lew Perkins to make sure he keeps Self coaching the Jayhawks.
The now-deeply-in-love-with-Self boosters will never forgive Perkins if he lets his coach slip away to Stillwater.
Perkins is facing a formidable foe in OSU and ultra-rich supporter Boone Pickens.
The Texas billionaire has made no secret of his infatuation with Self's coaching abilities, and is determined to bring his fellow Cowboy back to OSU.
Self made a guaranteed $1.397 million this season. With bonuses, an annuity and summer camps, Self's salary will now get bumped up to $1.9 million because of taking KU to the national title.
But the key word here is "guaranteed." Inside sources have confirmed that Self wants Perkins and KU to come up with a guaranteed contract that would put him the range of $2.5 million per season. That's the going rate for coaches like Ohio State's Thad Matta and Kentucky's Billy Gillispie.
Inside sources have also confirmed that Perkins has informed Self that there is no way KU has the resources to match what is expected to be a blockbuster deal by OSU.
And Perkins has to know that OSU is ready, willing and able to guarantee every single dollar it offers Self.
So, what happens if OSU does indeed come up with the staggering offer that is the hottest rumor around here this weekend?
That rumor has been fueled by the fact that OSU athletic director Mike Holder and assistant AD Dave Martin are in town, and they aren't there to watch the Final Four.
Self's attorney, Tulsa-based Stuart Campbell, is also in San Antonio. While OSU officials will follow the rules and not talk to Self until after his season is over, that won't stop them from talking to Campbell.
Ever since OSU forced Sean Sutton to resign last Tuesday, Self has adamantly maintained that he intends to be coaching at KU next season.
But sources said Self has received telephone calls from several of his fellow coaches who have all had a similar message: "You've got to go (to OSU). You've got to go make as much as you can and then you can get the hell out of the business a rich man."
The performance by his Jayhawks Saturday night will only help his cause.
While it was Self's first appearance in the Final Four, his Jayhawks played the opening half like he was the veteran coach in the national semifinal instead of Williams.
KU immediately took it to North Carolina, especially Tar Heels' center Tyler Hansbrough.
The Jayhawks refused to be intimidated by the national player of the year, as forwards Darrell Aurth er and Darnell Jackson scored the two opening baskets over Hansbrough in a preview of what was to come.
Playing with precision at both ends of the Alamodome court, the Jayhawks totally dominated a North Carolina team that entered the NCAA Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed.
KU's defense forced the Tar Heals to go 0-13 from the field over a nine-minute stretch.
The Jayhawks, meanwhile, got balanced scoring. With six players scoring at least six points the first 20 minutes, KU went on runs of 18-0 and 25-2 (two North Carolina free throws) to take a 40-12 lead.
The play of freshman center Cole Aldrich was the biggest surprise of the shocking first-half domination by KU.
Aldrich, who had played an average of only eight minutes per contest this season, didn't back down from the more experienced Hansbrough as he had six points and six rebounds and tied his career high with three blocked shots in 13 minutes of action.
The second half was just as impressive for KU in a different way. When the Tar Heels cut the Jayhawks' lead to 54-50, most in the sold-out arena figured the nation's No. 1 team was going to pull off an historic comeback.
But KU's veteran players, led by guard Brandon Rush's 25 points, were able to regroup extend the lead.
So the win enables KU to go for its first national title since the Jayhawks defeated Oklahoma to win the 1988 Final Four in Kansas City, Mo.
No matter what happens in what should be a great title game between KU and Memphis, the fun will have only just begun for Bill Self and his bank account.

Pure nonsense. Self will stay in Kansas.
1 Self's attorney, Tulsa-based Stuart Campbell, is also in San Antonio. While OSU officials will follow the rules and not talk to Self until after his season is over, that won't stop them from talking to Campbell.
2 Bill Self’s attorney, Stuart Campbell of Tulsa, Okla., caused a commotion when asked by the Tulsa World if his client could become Oklahoma State’s next basketball coach.
3 Self was not amused at Campbell’s comments. Self has said he is “not a candidate” for the OSU position.
“Stuart Campbell is an attorney that looks over my contracts. He does not speak for me,” Self said Friday. “I have not spoken with him about this. I have not spoken with him in a month. Anybody speaking on behalf of me doesn’t know what they are talking about because I will speak for me."
Why does the Tulsa World put up with this kind of sports journalism ?

Bob, don't be naive. What is Self supposed to say during his presser as KU's coach. "Yeah, I really will think about the OSU offer?" Of course he says he's going back to KU. I believe this group of reporters, Sittler included, are the one who prepared you for Sean Sutton's demise.

Based on Self's history he doesn't seem to have loyalty to a team...Based on his history he will go with the money...In his defense, so will most college coaches...

Why does the next coach at OSU have to be Bill Self or any other OSU alum? No one, and I mean no one, has mentioned John Calipari as a possible candidate. He coaches in a mid-major conference, his team has had doubters, because of that, yet I wouldn't bet against them in the finals. And I believe you could get him for less money than Bill Self. He can recruit, has had winners where ever he has coached, and would bring instant creditability to the program.

Dream on OSU. Even with all the money in the world if doens't win the national title in two season he'll be fired. Those jokers who are running OSU will ruin a decent coach's legacy. WHY would he leave KU for a school that's not even close to the same caliber of a program. OSU is a disgrace and no I'm not an OU fan I'm an OSU alum who's watched this athletic program stay in the cellar of everything far too long. OSU will always stay last and it's due to the persona they portray in Stillwater.

Dave, KU was last in the title game in 2003 against Syracuse.
This entire situation is becoming very interesting. There seems to be three groups that don't want Bill Self to leave KU. The KU fans, OU fans, and T. Boone Pickens and Mark Holder haters. Members of these groups display more emotion than intelligence when they make statements that Self will never leave. Only Bill Self knows what he really wants and he will have his opportunity to let the rest of us know when the time comes. In the meanwhile the posts about the coaching job are much more entertaining than illuminating.

Ok, let's wake up and smell the Sunday morning coffee. Sure Boone controls OSU like Jones or Steinbrenner control their franchises. Do OSU fans, who have any real congnative skill (that includes you Sittler) that OSU has a chance to compete with KU for basketball provenance? Larry brown told Bill Self that he made a mistake leaving Kansas. Brown said that "you can coach a lot of places but there is no place better than the University of Kansas."
Brown has been with Self all week. He sat behind the bench last night. Self sees the mistakes Brown made when he left Kansas and became a basketball nomad.
Cash is one thing, history and quality of jobs is another. Self said "Kasnas is my dream job" when he left Illinois. Afetr a game like last night, do you really, honestly believe that he would leave Kansas?
Articles like this are divisive - but it is part and parcel with how Boone and the OSU puppets have behaved. The have shown the country how money can corrupt college athletics. Boone treats OSU like his plaything and the OSU a administration and alums find that OK.
There are three keys everyone is missing:
OSU crapped on the Suttons who is one of Bill Self's mentors.
Coach Brown has told Self there is no better place to coach than Kansas.
Your assumption that money solves all problems paints Bill Self's character in a very negative light and shows no respect for him as a man or a coach.
Self stays at Kansas and OSU is left looking like a semi-pro franchise run by a money-corrupted administration.

Ha ha ha Kansas. Better place a phone call to Kelvin Sampson...he is looking for a job. You'll need someone to take over when Self returns to his beloved Aggies the highest paid coach in the US. This Sooner believes it will happen. Please but not Bobby Knight, we don't need anymore baby temper tantrums in the Big 12.

Pete, Larry Brown was basically forced out at KU because of recruiting and "off court" problems. He was a nomad before and after he left Lawrence and he may only believe Kansas was a better job in retrospect.
I'll let Sittler speak for himself but he's a Cornhusker that has been critical of T. Boone and Holder in the past and I'm certain will be again in the future. Paul Hansen was Bill Self's coach at OSU and was probably more of a mentor to him than Eddie Sutton. I can't see anyone turning down the job because of Sean's dismissal except for maybe Scott Sutton. I'd bet even James Dickey would take the job if it were offered.
Character really has nothing to do with college coaching changes. Did Kansas have any problems with taking Self away from Illinois? Did Illinois have any problems with taking him away from Tulsa? Did Tulsa have any problems with taking him away from Oral Roberts? I'm guessing you are a KU fan that because of the situation and your fear that Self will leave has also joined the Pickens/Holder haters. Am I correct?

How anyone could not be a KU fan after this tournament is beyond me. They have received little respect - even my hometown Vols had more respect from the pundits going into the tourney. They continue to perform.
My interest in this issue is primarily related to the devolution of college sports in Stillwater. Pickens is a cancer to college sports.
I understand who was coaching at OSU when Self played. Sutton hired Self after he left Kansas as an assistant. You are incorrect about Brown being forced form Kansas. In '86 and '87 I remember brown looking to move both years. After the '88 championship, he was poised to go to UCLA but them eventually left for the Spurs. The probation he left was what predecated Kansas only being able to hire Williams as a coach as Gary Williams and others turned it down.
Back to my point. I am interested in this debockle because the OSU fans place an incredible emphasis on money and nothing on loyalty or the value of a man. Self's history has shown him climbing to better programs. Clearly he said when he left Illinois that Kasnas was his dream job. Moving to OSU for whatever the money is a step down. A move like that in a conference in which he already coaches would be unprescedented. Simply looking at it with orange glasses that he will leave because he has "always left places" is nuts. He has been landing better jobs each time and a move to OSU is a step down from Kansas - regardless of your perspective.
Self said on Tuesday that he spent 12 years in OSU and he loves his alma-mater but he is happy at Kansas. What I see happening is Self recieving a substancial raise and contract extension at Kansas.
Look at the situation from the outside. Kansas has won more than half of the Big 12 championships since its inception. It has been to three elite 8's under Self and now a championship game. It is the third winningest program in the history of college basketball and has won more conference championships than any team in any conference in history. There are more stats I dug up, but you get the point. Despite the cash, Self is building something at a traditional power.

I can't believe there are people who really think Self would leave Kansas for OSU especially in the wake of their treatment of Sean Sutton. Self is tight with Eddie and the boys. You have as much chance of Self taking the job as you do Scott Sutton taking the job.

2) You seem to be part of one group who thinks money ultimately determines the final outcome and end of college sports, education and the key to turning OSU into a top basketball school.
3) Sure it could happen but it won't happen. Only the next few weeks will confirm this trutyh. Will you and Mr. Siittler then apologise to the OSU alumns, Kansas fans and Bill Self for showing less class than they have shown during the dust up of Sean Sutton's demise ? I doubt it.

Say, Pete, after reading some of the North Carolina internet articles this morning I'm thinking Roy Williams may be more available than Bill Self to be OSU's next coach. LOL
I can't read anyone's mind and that includes Bill Self's. Some people are motivated by the money, some by the fame, others by the chance of accomplishment, and others by working conditions. Even if the KU coaching job is better than OSU using these four criteria there is another consideration that may trump them for Bill Self.
Bill and his wife both have their families in Oklahoma. Both are graduates of Oklahoma State University. As their parents age and their children grow up maybe the lure of being "home" means more than all the money, fame, accomplishment, and tranquility in the world being at the University of Kansas brings. You should consider this.

Hey Sittler, KU has played in three national championships since the 88'championship,not one as you indicated. You've been slighting KU for years. I surmise that KU will ante up close to 3 mil with incentives and with the potential endorsements on the horizon his take would be infinite. Staying at Kansas is the better choice of the two aforementioned schools. Cindy and the kids love Lawrence and there is KC which is 30 min. away for fine dining and shopping. What does stillwater offer besides eskimo joes and hideaway pizza. OKC doesn't have much besides bricktown. Sounds like the pokes sold their soles to TBP

As a diehard KU fan, the last thing on my mind is whether Self leaves or not. KU fans are more concerned with bringing home another title, as well as coming up with enough energy to the cheer the 'hawks on tomorrow night!!! Of course I like Self as our coach, but if he can bring home another banner for the Fieldhouse, I will be ok with him leaving. Every job Self has left has been to coach at a more enticing program. With all due respect to OSU, you can't get much better than KU basketball and anyone who knows a thing or two can not argue that. ROCK CHALK!

One thing I think people are really underestimating is how much the Sutton's mean to Coach Self. Whoever that they would have a better chance getting Scott to leave ORU for OSU as landing Self is probably about right. It's also true that even though he's changed jobs a lot it's always been a step up, and that isn't true here. With all of Picken's money OSU can land a really good coach, and I hope they do; I look back fondly on the great teams of a few years ago and hope OSU can get back to that. However, I would be stunned if it's Bill Self.

It is what it is. Self has earned the right to go wherever he chooses. I would love to see him at OSU, but realize what it would mean to give up a coaching job at Kansas. I say bring on the GENERAL.

Two comments. One a reason Bill Self may stay at Kansas, one a reason he may not:
1. Don't forget that Kansas also has rich alumni. The Kansas AD has probably already started contacting them for long term donations to help when Self asks to renegotiate his contract (just like Tulsa University did when they were trying to keep Self). Remember that the CEO of SemGroup in Tulsa played basketball at Kansas and has the Kansas football field named after him so he has demonstrated a desire to support Kansas athletics.
2. The desire to coach at your alma-mater is very strong.

When he tries to sprinkle in a little FACT(when did KU last
play for the title?) he blows it by a million miles.
Hilarious that Sittler would seek comment from Bruce Pearl,
a coach who has to take a beer at the media hotel because
no one in the coaching fraternity can stand him. And that is
a FACT, Sittler.

Regardless of how this turns out, I am fascinated at the complete disregard for Bill Self and his KU team. As they played on the most amazing games I have ever seen last night, I was amazed at their confidence and composure and they deserve a huge amount of credit. If OSU wants to persue Self, go for it but it is a shame he and his team have had to deal with the rumors and distractions going into the Final Four.
A little courtesy to an alum would have been nice but looked how that turned out for Sean Sutton.

Assuming, Pickens wants Bill Self so much that he is willing to pay $6-8 million per year for his services. I am sure he wants a national title or two in return. Remember this, if the KU job does come open, there will be 5 and when KU wins tomorrow night perhaps 9 scholarships for next year (Rush, Arthur, Collins, and maybe Chalmers). KU IS a big name and Bill Self will need to know he will have to rebuild OSU and likely do it against a bigger name coach than him sitting at KU with all of their tradition and those scholarships. For example, if Self leaves, Calipari, Gillespie, Turgeon, maybe Billy Donovan, Rick Pitino, or another coach will just apply for the job. With those scholarships and several major recruits already discussing KU (Mr. Henry from Oklahoma for example) Bill will have a very hard time meeting Mr. Pickens expectations.
