KU beats Tigers in OT thriller
SAN ANTONIO -- So patient for 20 years, Kansas had no problem working an extra five minutes to bring a long-awaited championship back to the heartland.
Mario Chalmers hit a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in regulation to push the game into overtime, and the Jayhawks grinded it out from there for a 75-68 win Monday night over Memphis in one of the best title games in recent memory.
Chalmers' shot pulled Kansas into a tie after being down nine with 2:12 left. Memphis left the door open by missing four free throws down the stretch. And in a game where every point counted, Derrick Rose's two-point shot off glass that was initially ruled a 3 -- and correctly overturned -- also made a difference.
Chalmers' 3-pointer was never in doubt.
"We got the ball in our most clutch player's hands, and he delivered," Kansas coach Bill Self said.
It gave Kansas its first title since 1988, when Danny Manning, now an assistant coach for the Jayhawks, led them to an upset of Oklahoma. And the shot earned Chalmers the most outstanding player honor.
"I had a good look at it," Chalmers said. "When it left my hands it felt like it was good, and it just went in."
The most memorable performance in this one, though, came from Rose, the Memphis freshman, who completely took over the game in the second half, scoring 14 of his team's 16 points during one stretch to lift the Tigers to a 60-51 lead with 2:12 left.
Hustling the ball down the court with 10.8 seconds left and no timeouts, Sherron Collins handed off to Chalmers at the top of the 3-point line, and Chalmers took the shot. It hit nothing but net and tied the score at 63.
Robert Dozier missed a desperation shot at the buzzer, and Rose went limping to the bench, favoring his right leg. Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson scored the first six points of overtime to put Kansas ahead 69-63. Memphis, clearly exhausted, didn't pull any closer than three the rest of the way.
Arthur was dominant inside, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds, lots on dunks and easy lay-ups off lob passes.
Chalmers had with 18 points. Rush had 12 and Collins had 11 points, six assists and did a wonderful job shutting Rose for the first 28 minutes.
Rose wound up with 18 points in a game that showed how ready he is for the NBA. He was 3-for-4 from the line, however, and that one miss with 10.8 seconds left is what almost certainly would have sealed the game and given the Tigers (38-2) their first title.
Kansas, mostly Collins, put the clamps on Rose for the first half, allowing the freshman only four shots and leaving him spiking the ball on the floor as he walked to the lock er room after a frustrating 20 minutes.
Then, finally Rose took over -- a 3-pointer here, a scooping layup for a three-point play next.
Then, the capper, an off-balance, 18-foot shot off glass with the shot-clock buzzer sounding. Officials at first credited Rose with a 3, but went to the replay monitor and saw he was clearly inside the line.
"I thought this would be great," Self said, "and it's a lot better than I thought it would be."

Think maybe [Self/KU] winning it all may make it MORE likley (if only by 5% or so) that he make a move to his Alma Mater. He has reached the Pinnacle, cant get any better. Its all downhill from here (the National Championship). Why not now move to your Alma Mater & get PAID.

Hey KU fans, shut the heck up! Stop putting down other teams because you won the National Title. All you are doing is making yourselves look bad. Last time I checked the Pokes did beat Kansas this season so back off and if you're going to talk crap do it on you're own websites!

Too many schools, such as Nebraska, have fired coaches before giving them a chance to develop a program. It's too bad OSU can't find a more balanced approach to fund their athletic program, with donors who have the sense to be supporters and not administrators. Pickens may yet turn into a trojan horse.

To Drake:
Someone seems a little testy this morning??? I think that OSU should try to find a coach that they will support and appreciate. I hope Eddie does take his name off the court, might as well replace it with Boones. No one will appreciate Bill at OSU until he delievers a national title and I have a feeling 5 years is not long enough to do so. KU was primed and ready for Bill to get his own style implemented and begin wining immediatley. OSU has no TEAM right now. How many of those guys will leave regardless of who is hired? KU has lost 4 players to transfer since Bill's time there but he was able to recover.
Bille will be very rich regardless of where he ends up.
BTW: Do you people honestly think OSU is better and/or should be thought of as better than KU because they beat them? Get real! ROCK CHALK!!!!!

I agree with drake 100% stop putting down other teams because they want you're coach. You should find that as a compliment but you Kansas fans have you're heads so far up you're butt that you don't understand anything. Lets look at the stats from all sports put together National Championship wise.
Kansas- 16 Teams 10 National Championships
Oklahoma State- 18 Teams 48 National Championships
So you might be able to beat us in Basketball and Football but according to the stats our history is way better than you're little Jayhawks.

It's amazing that folks think Bill has reached the pinnacle and that is why he can now leave KU. "It's all downhill..." only applies if Bill chooses to leave the top! He can stay at the top at one of the 3 best coaching jobs in basketball and may just go ahead and win 1 or 2 more championships along the way, something that he'll never do at OSU. I believe when it's all said and done that T Boone will find out that money can't buy everything.
Go Jayhawks

For people who keep bringing up KU's defeat at the hands of OSU.....SO WHAT? Ok, OSU beats KU at during the end of the reg season. And what does that prove? Absolutely nothing. OSU played their butts off, and I applaud them for their win. But 1 victory doesn't put OSU in the same tier of BB programs in the country.
If OSU is such a great job, why does Mr. Pickens have to shell out $3MM to land him? Shouldn't the tradition of OSU and family do the trick on its own?

Congratualtions to Kansas & Coach Bill Self! It must be nice ?
The University of Tulsa has three ex coaches who have now won the NCAA Championship. They are Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith and now Bill Self.

What a brilliant point you brought up Rick...Everyone knows how important sports other than football and basketball are to the collegiate sporst landscape. I just got back from the Final Four which I had to settle for since tickets to the NCAA Wrestling, Golf and Cross Country championshiops were all sold out. You Okie Pokies keep on dominating the world of menial sports with pride.

Rick,
I would just like to congratulate your Pokes on their 48 national championships. It's quite the accomplishment winning in such non-revenue earning sports wrestling (34 NC's) and golf (10 NC's). Such Tradition. I'm sure that will send the Basketball recruits running to OSU.
Truth be told, Kansas is the "birthplace" of college basketball. Storied programs such as North Carolina and Kentucky have roots which are deep within Kansas Basketball. Kansas has produced the likes of Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Wilt Chamberlin, James Naismith, Roy Williams, Larry Brown, Bill Self, etc. The Tradition at Kansas with respect to basketball, and let's face it Rick, that's what we're all talking about (not wrestling or golf), the tradition is so step that very few, if any program in America can come close to touching what Kansas has.
If Bill Self leaves Kansas it will because of Greed. Personally I think Bill deserves to be one of, if not the highest paid coach in College Basketball. But, if Boone Pickens is so absurdly stubborn as to throw ridiculous sums of money in Bills direction and the Fans of OSU support that, then in my opinion you are all just as greedy as Boone (and Bill, if he were to take the job).
There's nothing wrong with making a decent living. And god knows, if Bill takes the job at OSU, college presidents and athletic directors across America will be scratching their heads trying to figure out how in the world the will be able to compete with Oil Rich Tycoons who lobby their way into an athletic department by promising stupid amounts of money in hopes of luring excellent coaches away from Tradition Rich Schools. Do we seriously need to be paying our coaches the type of money which has been mentioned to get Bill Self to come to OSU?
OSU and their "tradition" as you so aptly put it Rick, can shove it up your .... Hopefully, Bill will do the right thing, which is get a decent raise and contract extension from his current employer....which if you didn't know has far more tradition than OSU. But hey, maybe Bill or whoever the next coach is at OSU can sell his recruits on 34 wrestling National Championships.
