Former OU receiver Kelly angry at Sooner coach after today's workout

NORMAN -- Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly wasn't happy with his 40 times during his workouts for NFL scouts on Wednesday.

Afterwards, he wasn't happy with OU, specifically strength coach Jerry Schmidt.

Kelly ran with Reggie Smith, Marcus Walker and Joe Jon Finley inside OU's Everest Training Center, which has a soft FieldTurf-type surface. Kelly, who has been injured since the team's Fiesta Bowl practices in December, had been unable to run for scouts before Wednesday and has been training in Atlanta for three months on a shorter, firmer AstroTurf-type surface.

Kelly said he was assured by Schmidt that he would be allowed to run on OU's other indoor facility, the indoor track infield's AstroTurf.

Instead, Kelly ran on the softer turf and, although there was no official time, NFL.com is reporting Kelly's time as 4.68, said NFL.com writer Gil Brandt. Another independent watch had Kelly at 4.68, but a random check of various teams' scouting sheets showed Kelly's best time ranging from 4.49 to 4.81.

Afterwards, Kelly complained loudly about his situation and was later seen arguing with Schmidt, pointing his finger, waving his hands and even twice throwing shoes he held in his hands. They finished their conversation behind closed doors and Kelly said ''we settled it,'' but he was still visibly upset.

Kelly said at the NFL Scouting Combine in February that he was told if he could run 4.55 or faster at OU, he could be a top-15 pick in the NFL Draft on April 26. Now, he acknowledged that some teams might be scared off by his slow times.

Kelly said he recently ran 4.50 and 4.47 on a firmer surface in Atlanta.

In football terms, the difference in Kelly's times in Atlanta and his times in Norman is vast. In regards to whether Kelly is drafted in the middle of the first round or the end of the first round, the difference could mean millions of dollars in a contract or a signing bonus.

''This is my life. You know what I'm saying?'' Kelly said. ''This ain't no school. This ain't no classroom. This ain't got nothing to do with that. This has to do with me; my family. This is what I do. I play football. And I'm supposed to come out here and run as fast as I can. I already had everything set up for where I want to do it at. I get out here and it's a whole different deal.''

Kelly said he'd researched the results of past wide receivers like Mike Williams, Larry Fitzgerald and Braylon Edwards and found that many ran for scouts either on AstroTurf or a track.

Schmidt said scouts will add .1 to .15 seconds to a 40 time, depending on the team, if they perceive a track to be too fast.

But Kelly said he had been told more than once by scouts that they wouldn't be adding time regardless of the surface.

''So that's what I get listening to everybody else,'' he said.

Schmidt said he understood Kelly's frustration because he's been injured for so long. But Schmidt also said NFL scouts preferred Kelly run on the softer surface because ''this is the surface that they run on.

''I told Malcolm it's up to him, wherever he wants to run.''

''That's true,'' Kelly said, ''it was already settled we were going to run on that AstroTurf stuff. But as soon as we walk in here this morning, the cones are set up to run the 40 in here.''

Kelly didn't save all his displeasure for Schmidt, either. He also had some pointed words for the OU medical staff about his Fiesta Bowl injury, which was first reported on the day of the game as a pulled thigh muscle but was later determined to be a tear. Kelly practiced sparingly leading up to the game, then played just one series.

''At the bowl game, people were questioning was I trying to not play so I could leave early for the draft and all that kind of stuff,'' Kelly said. ''I was told by the staff I had a thigh bruise. I told them it felt a lot worse than that. 'No, it's not that bad; go out there and run; it's not a thigh tear, it's just a thigh bruise.' Kept trying to run; never did get any better. Didn't play in the game, so I finally went out there training and it never got any better. I went and got an MRI and I've got a thigh tear.

''So what if I would he went out there and tried to play in the bowl game and went out there and tried to run full speed? Then where would I be right now? Nowhere. Sitting at home, still rehabbing. Back here for another season. You know what I'm saying?

''People say to always trust in what they're saying, they're not going to steer you wrong. But. . . .''

Asked if he felt let down by OU, he said, ''I wouldn't say the whole coaching staff, but certain people, yeah. . . . And they know who they are.''

Kelly is a junior from Longview, Texas, who declared himself eligible for the draft after three years as one of the Sooners' most prolific wideouts. He's rated by many draft services as the top wideout in the draft.

''You play somewhere for three years, you give 'em all you got, every summer, every winter, and all you ask for is an hour and a half to have it like you want to have it. And people got a problem with it.''

Wow, he makes a few good points, but overall his attitude just convinced me that the TEAM will be better off without him next year.

Also, he should be glad he calmed down a little because I think Jerry Schmidt could snap him in half.

one thing is abundantly clear: it most certainly "ain't no school."

probably never was no school, either, since most students learn "ain't" ain't a real word, and one would think a person would want to talk real good English when being quoted in a newspaper.

ah, but soon enough Mr. Kelly will be a millionaire, thanks to football, which, as he so eloquently stated, is "what I do."

Here we go again, it is always someone elses fault. Looks like Kelly really needs focus on an attitude adjustment not a good time in the 40.

Time for him to move on, sooner not later.

Sounds to me like with his verbal skills he could, in fact, use a few more years of school. But maybe I ain't a expert.

I don't agree with you about Malcolm Terrell Owensed his way out. I do agree with the way he feels. You don't know the whole story, so you should keep your comments to yourself. How would you feel if you placed your trust in someone only to be betrayed?
If Kelly's understanding was to work out on the firmer surface then he should have been allowed to do so. This makes we wonder if this is the same person who kept him out of the game they lost during regular football season. I smell a rat.

To the professor crusing the galaxies...,

According to the dictionary, the word ain't means am not. Used also as a contraction for are not, is not, has not, and have not.
The use of ain't goes back to the 18th century, and the contraction has been strongly condemned as a mark of ignorance since the 1800's. NEVERTHELESS, it has remained in use by EDUCATED speakers wishing to strike a jocular or popular note, especially in fixed expressions.

Read between the lines. Get your facts straight and know the whole story before you speak. There is some friction here and it just didnt' happen today!

What a crybaby! Why is he running at OU when he probably doesn't even attend anymore (rehabbing in Atlanta for three months)? Where is his agent, or others he should have HIRED to watch out for HIS interests?

Kelly isn't an academic and it is evident that he has invested most all of his efforts in being the best at one thing (playing football). So you shouldn't be surprised if he is upset with people who mislead him about injuries and proceedures. It's not possible to excel at football on that scale without trusting people who are experts in his field. If he was told that his injury was less than it was for the purpose of benefiting the school then that was WRONG... When it comes to the field surfaces and 40 times then I have to put that on Kelly. His job is to show up and perform on whatever surface is required. If his 40 time was that important then he should have verified everything and practiced accordingly. It is my belief that Kelly knew what was expected but needed a way to communicate the reason for his performace. This allowed him to blame some of the staff at OU for his injury (which is probably the true reason he was slow). Bottomline: OU failed to help their player and in return the University will take a bit of a beating to make things even again.

Oh, soonermajik8, the coaches at OU can't take credit for Kellys success. Most people who go through that program don't make it to (or in) the NFL. Kelly is a gifted physical athlete. He could have made it in a number of programs around the country. You are however correct that he needs to grow up a bit. That's an easy thing to say for most people who aren't in his shoes (hehehe). I will add that most people his age aren't very gifted with words and mannerisms. Especially when there are so many people in that industry that are there just to take advantage and make a lot of money. IMO - It is a very corrupt business (just ask Jerry Jones or any of the other owners in the league).

Wait...PW, what's "EDUCATED" mean, when referring to football players in the State of Oklahoma?

I ain't never had no formal education myself, but I's smart enough to know that a lot of football players don't learn much around these parts except how to sell cocaine, rape co-eds, steal coats, punch police officers, rape 12-year olds, smoke dope, and somehow stay academically eligible through it all.

I ain't disputing that "ain't" ain't in the dictionary. And it ain't really a bad word, overall. I ain't sure, though, how jocular it is when used by a dumb jock.

Malcolm....maybe if you were a little faster, you wouldn't have to worry about what surface you run your 40! GET OUTTA HERE and good luck in whatever round you go in the draft!!!

Kelly has done nothing but whine and show his immaturity since before the end of the season. Always has an excuse and has to blame everyone else for his failures. He needs a reality check a firm spot on the practice squad for a while.

I think all you guys are full of crap to call any player a whiner. You're probably the same people who blame players when a team looses by a little and blame the coaches when the team looses by a lot. The same guys who blame poor NFL contracts and hence poor player selection on salary cap rather than poor negotiation skills.

The NFL is a BUSINESS 1st and there is plenty of I in TEAM. Don't believe all that TEAM brainwasing often employed to take advantage of people. "I" must do the best "I" can to help the team... I comes first.

Malcolm has the right idea. If he came prepared with Astroturf shoes and then ran on Field Turf with the wrong shoes....that is a huge problem. Payton Manning wouldn't play on grass with track spikes would he?

Are Sooner fans or Alumni really slamming Malcolm Kelly? He helped us get 2 Big 12 Championships in the last 3 years. And, at the very least, his grievances are plausible.

If I were told to prepare for one thing (indoor track) and then showed up and had to run on something else(soft grass) and it cost me a few million dollars. You bet your bottom dollar, I'd be mad as heck.

Also, if I were told that I had a bruise when I actually had a tear and it cost me money, I wouldn't be happy about that either.

I'm not saying that those things are true, but they're plausible. And I will give the benefit of a doubt to a guy thats served us as well as Malcolm has.
