Life in Stillwater won't ever be the same
Without Sean Sutton (left), the basketball program at Oklahoma State will be markedly different. Sutton resigned under pressure last week after two seasons as head coach of the Cowboys. Going with him are tons of memories from his playing and coaching days and his father’s coaching tenure. STEPHEN PINGRY / Tulsa World

Former Cowboy basketball player Randy Rutherford paused in a hallway at Oklahoma State University last week and said something downright profound.
Everything, he said, is going to be different.
People don't realize it yet. Players don't realize it yet. But everything is going to be different.
Rutherford's words came one day after OSU basketball coach Sean Sutton stepped down. I had been so busy covering the news (can't see the forest for the trees) that, until listening to Rutherford, I hadn't stopped to think about the obvious.
Rome fell.
For 18 seasons, the House of Sutton was the ruling family in Stillwater. The Sutton Dynasty survived 12 years longer than the Ming Dynasty, 1 year longer than the Flavian Dynasty and nine seasons longer than the television show "Dynasty."
By any measuring stick, and even though Eddie Sutton and successor Sean Sutton would have chosen better exits, the Sutton Dynasty was a high point in OSU's athletic history.
The same could be said of the Cowboys' other great roundball era. But the Iba Dynasty -- 36 seasons, 969 games, two national championships -- was followed by a hoops drought in which five coaches combined to make one NCAA Tournament appearance.
Then came the Suttons and OSU advanced to either the NCAA Tournament or NIT 17 times in 18 years. Basketball became important again.
This is not a plea to launch
a palace coup and put the Suttons back on the throne. Athletic director Mike Holder made his decision last week. No one is going to travel back in time and change Holder's mind, so the best thing OSU fans can do is move forward, all the while appreciating that the Sutton Dynasty is one worth remembering.
For instance:
How about Bryant Reeves busting a backboard into souvenir shards at a Final Four practice? How about his halfcourt shot against Missouri?
How about ultra-chatty point guard Doug Gottlieb being the guy who must have always finished last when playing the "quiet game" as a kid? Gottlieb dished at OSU (he's the school's career assist leader) and now he gets paid by ESPN to dish.
How about "Big Dady?" Hot-tempered Goliath Jason Keep was one of the most interesting characters ever to suit up for the Cowboys. One of his many tattoos was a misspelling of "Big Daddy." Keep shattered a backboard in the grand re-opening game at expanded Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Got time for another Keep story? Apparently, Keep once needed only a few moves to beat Alex Webber in chess. Gottlieb explained that Webber is smart, but only "Arkansas smart."
How about Rutherford dropping 45 points on the mighty Kansas Jayhawks in 1995?
How about two players combining for 74 points in one game, like Mario Boggan and Texas' Kevin Durant did in a triple-overtime instant classic two seasons ago?
How about Byron Houston leading the league in bruises?
How about "the shot?" John Lucas cranked a 3-pointer that sent the Pokes to a Final Four.
How about Mo Baker rebounding like no guard should be able to rebound? Baker has one of two triple-doubles in school history.
How about the way Andre Williams, steeled by past tragedies, kept his cool and spoke like a man at a memorial service for plane crash victims?
How about Gallagher-Iba bursting with raw emotion in the first game following the crash? When the joint got loud, you could feel goose bumps growing.
How about Byron Eaton leading the Cowboys to an ambush of the soon-to-be national champions? Kansas was beaten by OSU on Feb. 23 and never lost again.
How about Cornell Hatcher? He was Eddie Sutton's first OSU signee and he wound up with the second-best Sutton Dynasty nickname ("The Phantom"). The best nick name was, of course, "Big Country."
How about Scott Pierce being "Toothless in Seattle?"
How about Joey Graham and Stephen Graham showing up on Gallagher-Iba's doorstep to ask if OSU needed any players?
How about Victor Williams' Bedlam-winning bank shot with 3.6 seconds left?
How about Chad Alexander driving the length of the court for a left-handed buzzer-beater against Missouri in 1997?
How about the Sweet Swede, Fredrik Jonzen, and the bird of prey, defender deluxe Marcus Dove?
How about all the great players (Desmond Mason, Tony Allen, Adrian Peterson, James- On Curry, Joe Adkins, Corey Williams, Ivan McFarlin) that you hate to mention because you fear you will accidentally omit a dozen worthy others?
Rome fell.
If OSU makes a home run hire, perhaps Rome can be rebuilt in a day.
But Rutherford is right. Perhaps OSU can be wildly successful again. But things will never be quite the same.

Very good article indeed. I cracked many smiles while reading and remembering all of those great moments and great players. I remember the game where Keep shattered the backboard, as I was lucky enough to be there for the grand re-opening. I remember in the "old" building after Big Country shattered a practice backboard, kids were lined up after the game with chunks of glass for him to sign. I remember my first game and getting the players to sign my shirt. My friend and his father were really excited when they saw that Bryant Reeves had signed his name as "Big Country." I'll never forget while having Eddie Sutton autograph his OSU trading card (with a picture of him during his playing days) his wife Patsy remarking about his "sexy legs" and Eddie just smiling. Those were great times that pumped life back into OSU basketball, and made me a Cowboys fan for life. Here's to those memories, and hoping that the next coach can create even better memories in the years to come!

I never undestood why Eddie scowled on the bench. Every time I ever met the guy he was quite jovial and ALWAYS quick with a smile. But it wouldn't have been OSU basketball without his scowl.

I went to a few team camps at OSU. Eddie Sutton, Sean Sutton and John Pelphrey all coached the camps. Those were awesome camps, learned alot of basketball. Those coaches were awesome, too. Playing in "the hotbox" on a summer day was pretty brutal, but all in all it was a great time.

Great article Jimmie. I have no association with OSU but it is an interesting take on all that is changed when coaches move on.

Thank you Mr. Tramel for the wonderful trip down memory lane. Although the "Sutton Dynasty" did not end as we all would have liked for it to, we should be greatful for all of the good, the return of OSU Basketball tradition, that they gave to us.

Great article and I agree that the Sutton era was awesome. Eddie is a hall of famer who instantly put OSU basketball on the national stage. Sean played for the cowboys and coached for the cowboys with the same work-ethic and intensity and he got fired winning 39 games in 2 years and beating this years national champs. I am a die hard razorback basketball fan since I grew up when eddie was coaching our hogs and I became a huge OSU basketball fan while Edddie was coaching the cowboys. I have to say that I will no longer go to a game or be a fan of Boone Pickens university.

Actually, I believe that Rome fell when Eddie decided to get behind the wheel of a car and crashed into another vehicle. Let's face it, OSU basketball was never the same after that episode. Sean did the best he could do considering the circumstances, but Eddie left his son with the unexpected task of filling his shoes. I forgive Eddie for that tragic day, but I'll never forget it. Holder made a gutsy call. I applaud him for realizing it was time for the Sutton dynasty to end. Eddie and Sean gave us some great memories, but never forget that change is good.

I bet a bunch of you dudes vote for Obama. When ego Eddie stepped down, that was the right thing to do, he was drunk. When sean Sutton resigned that was the right thing to do, his players did not always play for him like they should. And, next season would have been similar to this season.
Let ego Eddie take his name off the court and put Mr. Iba's on. NO coach still living should have his name on the court. A college coach today is getting plenty of money to offset an honor like that.
Yes, I went to college and continue to wonder why they pay a basketball coach so much money. It's a kid's game, a higher
level of intramural sports. Yet, we make celebrities out of college coaches and players. We have many of our priorities out of order. Go KU!!!!!!

#8, Me too. Very Sick. Truth is that there is only one other college program that Self will go to. That said, Sean should have been given at least one more year as he deserved. If Sean got the team going as many expected, we're good. If not, then we part with Sean (he would have gone on his own at that point), and we talk to Bill who's Salary might not have been doubled otherwise.
Instead we are all hoping that Bill has fulfilled his goal and he's ready for the next challenge (building a dynasty at his old school!). I'm afraid Holder played this poorly. I hear Larry Brown wants to coach again......anywhere according to him. If I were Holder, I'd give up on Self right now and make a call to Larry B.

The Sutton Dynasty was a big step up for OSU Athletics. Holder is leading the way toward an even bigger step up. Basketball will soon reach even greater heights than the Suttons brought.

Since I have not learned the true facts by now, I assume that they will probably not surface for a considerable time. The forced (?) resignation does signal the end of an era but in no way does it mean that OSU basketball is in a downward spiral. In the end, one can only hope that the OSU family can find a way to move beyond this event and support AD Holder in his quest for OSU sports excellence. Go Pokes!!!!

I hope a lot of these "dudes" do vote for Obama. It would sure beat the heck out of a continuation of the last 20 years of Bushes and Clintons. I bet you're going to vote for McCain, Tuff? An old war monger who's not dismayed by the prospect of keeping American forces in the Middle East for 100 years?
What a lovely idea! Let me know when you, or one of your sons signs up for that trip.
Sports ARE just games. No matter how high the stakes, it isn't life and death. Life and death is Iraq. Afghanistan. People like Tuff like to sit back and watch their sports, wave an American flag and shout "yeehaw!" while knocking the one guy running for president who actually knew Iraq was a sham and is committed to getting us out and focusing on real threats.
I really don't know what politics have to do with a basketball story, other than that the parting of ways with the Suttons was a political move much more than it was a Wins & Losses one.
Personally, I'm still saddened by the way the so-called "Sutton Dynasty" came to a close. They gave us many, many wonderful memories Nothing lasts forever, though, and my hope is the same as everyone else who cares about oSu sports: that whoever is hired will build something equally, if not more, memorable.

Give me a break Jimmie...$$ 2.7 MILLION. Life won't be the same at OSU ???? You mean for Sean's life in the HIGH LIFE. The OSU kids will still be studying right...we all hope so, while Sean will be living on some island if he is smart $20K/month for the next 10 years. I wish it were me...
Who knows...maybe OSU student may find a cure for the common cold.
That will Definitely put OSU on the MAP of the WORLD! Just think of the wonderful things the School could of done with the 2.7 MILLION???

Hey you in Springdate. Ever hear of Frank Broyles. He did his share of firing. How about the "Chick Factory" in Ar buying out Nutt's contract? Holder didn't cause the BB program to go down at OSU. He caused the Golf program to go up, he caused the facilities to go up. So far he has not had a failure. 39 games with a bunch of loses. I doubt that you went to OSU games anyway. This was a very good objective article.

Great article. I'm one of those people that cheer for both state schools. This article brought back some emotion remembering all of those great moments.
It will be interesting to see if Picken's money will eventually = championships. You would think so but you never know. It doesn't seem to be working in football yet.
I'm of the opinion that Sean Sutton will make a rebound as an excellent coach some day. Only giving him 2 years seemed absurd to me. It's sad that Eddie Sutton is even considering removing his name from the court. Mike Holder strikes me as being completely out of touch with the common OSU fan's feelings.
