A clean program is No. 1, Holder says
By JIMMIE TRAMEL World Sports Writer

OSU AD moves on, searches for a coach with integrity, discipline.
Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder reminded reporters he has been recruiting for a long time. A former golf coach, Holder recruited players who supplied OSU with eight national championship trophies.
Now Holder is trying to recruit a men's basketball coach. Target No. 1, blue-chip prospect Bill Self, chose Kansas. Holder said you get "no" more often than "yes" in the recruiting game.
"I've had my heart set on a lot of great players through the years that I didn't get and somehow persevered and you never know who's the chosen one for you," Holder said. "I hope that's what we end up with at the end of the search."
Who will be the chosen one? Holder said his No. 1 priority is finding a coach who will be a "good fit" and run a clean program.
"We don't want to cheat," he said. "We want to go by the rules. Integrity is important to us and (so is) graduating players and dis cipline. We want a disciplined program. We want something that our fans can be proud of and then we want a coach that can relate to our fan base, which is kind of salt of the earth people.
"We are out here in the middle of the United States and it's good folks. Most of us aren't real sophisticated, me included, so I want someone that can be embraced by our fan base."
Self would have fit in all categories. He is a successful, popular alum whose arrival would have sparked jubilation.
Though many people say Holder marches to the beat of a different drum, he is apparently not a solo act in regard to the search. He has actively sought input from others when doing background work on potential candidates.
"I sat here and told everybody in that original press conference (when Sean Sut ton's departure was announced) that I don't know anything about coaching basketball and I don't really know basketball coaches personally," he said.
"So it wouldn't be good for me to just sit back and try to pick someone. I need to talk to people that I have confidence in that can tell me where I should be looking and who is a good fit for us."
Holder's research mission led him to the Final Four in San Antonio, where there were plenty of hoops brains ripe for the picking.
"I didn't talk to very many coaches there," he said. "I talked to mostly people in the business, and it's a big business. I just wanted to find out about the coaches as individuals, what type of people they were. Everyone I talked to, I learned something."
On Friday, Holder denied a CBSSportsline.com report that an OSU official, or someone representing the school, approached Washington State's Tony Bennett in San Antonio. The report said Bennett was asked if he would consider a big-money offer from OSU if Self stayed at KU. The Web site, citing anonymous sources, reported Bennett was not interested.
Also Friday, a Tennessee media outlet reported that OSU has not contacted Vanderbilt for permission to speak with Kevin Stallings.
Holder, who is not identify ing prospects, is continuing to gather information and even asked Self for a few names.
Holder indicated he will not be talking to agents or search firms. He wants to deal with candidates rather than mouthpieces for candidates.
When asked if he is confident OSU can land a good coach, Holder said, "I think this is a great job, so sure. Only time will tell and then it will be up to everyone to evaluate the quality of the individual that comes in here."
Holder said everybody will have an opinion when a hiring is announced.
"But the real proof in the pudding will be eight years down the road when you look at the body of work," he said. "And just because somebody has been successful at another place doesn't mean they are going to be successful here. I always felt like that a lot of things conspired to make me successful as a golf coach at Oklahoma State and you couldn't necessarily put me at another university in another location and have the same kind of success."
Holder told one additional golf story that relates to his current predicament.
When he came to OSU to try out for the golf team many years ago, he said the golf coach said, "you are a pretty good player, but you putt like you are shooting a shotgun. It's more like a rifle."
The coach said it many more times and Holder couldn't quite grasp the concept. Now he understands.
"Basically the (message) was I needed to be a lot better putter and I needed to focus on the target better and not just the general direction and that's kind of the approach I am going to take on this coaching search," Holder said Thursday.
"I haven't figured out what the target is yet. I am gathering information. But I would like to use a rifle when I make up my mind."

As an OSU grad/fan, I'm still not sure where I come down on this whole firing/hiring thing, but 2 things jump out at me from Holder's quotes:
1) I am CERTAIN that I don't appreciate being labeled "unsophisticated" by our AD.
2) Holder says that the proof in this hiring will be "8 years down the road". To me, that implies that he will be patient with whomever he hires.
Obviously, the general public doesn't know what went on behind the scenes between Holder & Sean. My guess is that since there are stipulations in the settlement that state Sean or his family can't comment or make disparaging remarks, it probably wasn't pretty. (See Holder, I aint' no dummy.....I can cipher things out usin' my melon....how's that for fisticated?).
I just think if he's expecting the fans to be patient & wait 8 yrs for justification of whether or not he made a good hire, he could have been patient with Sean & given him at least 1 more year to see what he could do with his returning starters.
But, then again, what do I know?......I'm just an dumb ole Aggie with an Engineering degree.

Great article. Holder is a man of integrity and vision. He will take OSU far. If you can't see that through these quotes, you already have your mind made up and refuse to see the truth.

I agree #2, the "eight years" comment seems to imply whoever the next coach is will at least get longer than two years.
And as an OSU grad who went on to become an attorney, I don't appreciate the "unsophisticated" stereotype either.
I think our fan base will embrace any coach who can string together some decent seasons, and to imply that we need a "salt of the earth" coach to go with our "unsophisticated" fan base is just plain stupid on many different levels.
It's just further evidence Holder and Booney are trying to turn the athletic program into a good ol' boys club.

Cletus and Chance:
Playing poor victims I see.
1. He didn't say all were not sophisticated, but most were not.
2. Sophistication doesn't mean intelligence. In my experience, sophistication has more to do with bs than intelligence.
3. Why are you so jealous of T. Boone. If I remember he made his own.
4. I think a bunch of "gooners" or maybe "the worlds third largest hate group(left-wing democrats)" have done got all you boys riled up about T. Boone and Holder.
"Irritate a lefty, be successful".

–adjective 1. (of a person, ideas, tastes, manners, etc.) altered by education, experience, etc., so as to be worldly-wise; not naive.
So, by this definition, Holder thinks many OSU fans are not worldly-wise, but rather are naive.
Of course, we don't know exactly what he meant, but whatever it was, it wasn't the best comment to make about OSU fans. I will say this, though: it makes my head swim that he fired Sean without so much as a rough gameplan as to which coach he would pursue (beyond Self) or a method which he would use to search. It's a good thing he included himself in his assumption that OSU folks are generally "unsophisticated", becaue that's exactly how I'd label our process of running the basketball program.

So we're unsophisticated? OK, I'll play the part. Holder is a tool.

Run a clean program? How about revoking the schoolarship of that thug who assaulted a police officer? That would be a start to running a clean program, or did Holder just mean a clean program just so we win at all costs? LMFAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOO11 OSU=Oklahoma's Sorry University in STOOLWATER-the cesspool of OKLA!!!!

Frank, come on I know you aren't throwing darts from Tucson. What alma mater do you claim? I am sure it isn't the most upstanding program in the country. If you aren't a fan with an intelligent post please stay off.
This is a critical juncture for Holder. The jury is still out on Gundy so he needs to hit a homerun or he will be one very unpopular figure. I really hope Jamie Dixon is available or will at least listen. I know the OSU job is not a top 10 job, but with facilities and the right coach it could be very quickly.

#1, you are 100% correct! Give Holder 2 years, and if he hasn't hit a homerun, then send him back to golf.

Knight didn't do any better at Tech than Sean was doing @ OSU.
8 years from now we will look back and say, "Holder is a tool".
