Defender Evan Long scored on a thunderous volley from about 25 yards out to give Booker T. Washington a 2-1 overtime victory over Rogers Friday night at S.E. Williams Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A boys state soccer tournament.

It was the eighth victory in the last nine games for the surging Hornets (11-4). Rogers closes at 12-2, with both losses to the Hornets.

Washington will play Oklahoma City Northwest in the semifinals on Tuesday.

The winning goal game after Roper keeper Jorge Navarrte came off his line to punch a cross out of the box, but the deflection went right to Long, who one-timed a blistering shot into the right side of the net after just 2:21 of overtime.

The Hornets dominated play and limited the Ropers to five shots in regulation. However, the Ropers got a late break when Washington keeper Preston Langholtz was whistled for picking up a ball played to him by his defense.

Rogers was awarded a free kick at the left corner of the penalty box. Navarrete took the kick and drilled a low shot around the Hornets' defensive wall and into the lower right corner of the net with just 5:13 on the clock.

Washington nearly won in regulation when Miller sent a hard shot toward the upper right corner, but Navarrete deflected it wide for his 10th save of the game.

Washington got an early goal from Sam Miller, his twelfth in seven games since returning from injury. Miller's goal came on the Hornets' first shot with less than five minutes off the clock. He took it from an extreme angle on the left side, but somehow managed to curl the ball into the upper right corner.

Washington came close to adding an insurance goal on several occasions and had three near misses in the final 10 minutes of the opening half.

B.T. Washington 2, Bixby 1: Midfielder Carlin Gibbs fired a 30-yard rocket into the upper left corner with just 3:02 showing on the clock to give Booker T. Washington a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bixby Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A girls soccer tournament.

The Hornets will play Carl Albert in the semifinals Tuesday.

BTW (13-4) trailed 1-0 at intermission but tied the game early in the second half. Scoring star Claire Walker hooked a left-footed shot into an empty net after Bixby keeper Samantha Rusk came off her line but could not come up with a loose ball at the top of the penalty box.

Maeghan Estes got the only goal for Bixby (16-4) when her low, skidding shot slipped through the fingers of BTW keeper Alicia Zuern.
