EDMOND Union will return to the Class 6A girls state championship match after Tuesday night's 1-0 victory over Edmond Memorial.

The defending-champion Redskins (12-2-1) will face Edmond North in a Friday night championship game at the University of Tulsa. Union beat North 2-1 in the 2007 title contest.

Redskins freshman Caitlin Redmon scored midway through the first half, and a stingy defense made the lead stick.

"We set the goal (to return to the title game) last year," said Union coach Richard Verge, who was an assistant last season. "Everyone's stuck together and we've believed we can do this."

Edmond North (15-1) beat Mustang 2-1 in a shootout.

Shayna Kindsvater had a goal in regulation, and Kindsvater, Taylor Cofer and Hope Heinen scored in the penalty-kick phase to push North to its third straight title game.

North defeated Union 2-1 in a shootout earlier this season.

Class 5A

Booker T. Washington 3, Carl Albert 0:

At Midwest City, the Hornets advanced to their first state title game with the dominating victory.

Hayley Keown scored with about a minute remaining before halftime. The junior added an insurance goal with 10 minutes left, and senior Whitley Cope added the final goal.

"It's amazing," Washington coach Ashley Johnson said. "This is a first for the team. They're not looking just to be in the finals, but to take state."

Washington will face Bishop Kelley in Saturday's title game at TU. The Comets, nine-time defending champions, defeated Edmond Deer Creek 6-0.

Class 4A

Bishop McGuinness 5, Claremore Sequoyah 3:

At Claremore, Claremore Sequoyah (13-3) saw its season ended by a solid McGuinness squad that's now scored 17 playoff goals.

McGuinness, which led 3-1 at intermission, improved to 11-0.

"It was a team effort ," said McGuinness coach Sally Cole, whose team will face Metro Christian at TU.

Metro Christian defeated Heritage Hall 2-1 in a shootout victory.

Boys

Class 5A

Bishop Kelley 2, Edmond Deer Creek 1 (SO):

At Edmond, Bishop Kelley vaulted to its third straight title game in four years with a thrilling shootout victory.

The Comets (16-1) defeated Edmond Deer Creek 4-3 in the penalty-kick phase. Kelley goalkeeper Quintin Hubbarth had two smothering saves, including the finale, to boost his team into Saturday's title game against Booker T. Washington at TU.

"The boys earned it," Kelley coach Donivan Bradshaw said. "The seniors from last year, they felt like they've wanted redemption, which was in the back of their minds from a year ago."

Max Moller put the Comets up 1-0 with 13 minutes left in regulation before Deer Creek (14-4) knotted the score at 1 three minutes later.

Booker T. Washington 3, Northwest Classen 0:

At Oklahoma City, the Hornets (12-4) will play in the championship game for the first time since 2001.

Sam Miller scored a first-half goal, and Kyle Whitten and Greg Edmonds netted scores after halftime for Washington.

Class 4A

Cascia Hall 2, Clinton 1:

At Clinton, juniors Byron Dale and Price Pinkerton struck twice in the second half to send the two-time defending champions back to the title game.

Cascia Hall (12-1) will face Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at TU.

Dale's goal, two minutes into the second half, set the tone and Pinkerton's insurance goal made life easier.

"These guys, from the moment that we started practice, have had a chip on their shoulder," Cascia coach Drew Lockhart said. "No one gave them credit because they lost (a lot) of seniors from last year They want to prove everyone wrong."

Oklahoma Christian 4, Verdigris 2:

At Verdigris, the Cardinals saw their season come to an end against a high-scoring Oklahoma Christian squad. Verdigris ends its season at 10-3.
