Comet girls win 10th straight crown.
All of Bishop Kelley's tradition in girls soccer didn't mean as much to the Comets as one goal in the 68th minute of Friday's Class 5A championship match.
Sophomore midfielder Alex Starrett hammered a 30-yarder into the upper left corner of the net, lifting the Comets to a 1-0 win over Booker T. Washington before about 3,000 spectators at the University of Tulsa's Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
Kelley capped its second straight 18-0 season by winning a 10th straight state title, matching 10 other high school programs statewide that have accomplished the same feat in one sport or another.
"The tradition is very important," said Kelley head coach Troy Tokarchik, who has coached nine of the 10 championship teams. "But every year is unique, in and of itself, and it's all about the kids. These girls wrote their own chapter in that tradition."
Comet seniors Katie Bykowski, Christina Moore, Tracy Ritchie, Veronica Page and Amelia Williamson celebrated the fourth state title of their varsity careers.
Bykowski, the Kelley goalkeeper, stopped four shots to notch her 13th shutout of the season. The Comets won their 40th straight match over three seasons. Kelley hasn't lost since the last regular-season game of 2006.
"I think 10 feels pretty good," Ritchie said.
But it wasn't easy. Kelley scored 23 goals in its first three playoff victories, but Washington (14-5) played the Comets on almost even terms while making its first finals appearance.
The Hornets had the first big chance when Hayley Keown took Claire Walker's crossing shot, got around three defenders and fired just over the bar in the ninth minute.
"It's no surprise to me that we played them so close because I knew what my team could do," said Washington head coach Ashley Johnson. She said the match was similar to a 2-0 loss to the Comets two years ago, "two teams working hard, back and forth, lots of scoring chances."
Tokarchik said the Comets started the match "a little flat, but it was due to the pressure (Washington) put on us. They are a spectacular team. You can tell they've been playing in (Class 6A) for two years."
The match was tied at halftime, but Kelley seemed stronger and pushed forward as pressure mounted in the second half. Amy Petrikin hit the left post in the 60th minute. Less than two minutes later, Lydia Pounds missed a free kick over the bar from 25 yards.
Finally, Starrett broke the deadlock with her 20th goal of the season,
"(Sophomore) Amanda McCrory had it at the half-line and she crossed it over to the right side of the field and I trapped it and hit it with my foot and it went in," Starrett said. "We had to search deep. BTW brought all they had, so much adrenalin, effort and heart, and we just finished off the game. It was wonderful."

Hey at least we got real soccer coaches unlike other schools. That's what makes the difference. Our coaches know soccer. Those other coaches who are really FOOTBALL coaches know nothing about OUR GAME!! hahahahaha - sux for them. No wonder they couldn't finish state.
