Fast start nets Hornets a title

BTW boys win seventh state crown

The Booker T. Washington boys' soccer team didn't waste any time in taking command against Bishop Kelley.

The Hornets built an early lead on two first-period goals from a pair of sophomores and used stellar defense throughout to blank the Comets 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the Class 5A state championship before a crowd of 1,000 at the University of Tulsa Soccer Complex.

The victory gave the Hornets (13-4) their seventh state title in school history and first since capturing the Class 4A crown in 2001. That title was the final one in a stretch in which Booker T. won four Class 4A championships in a five-year period.

"These players earned this (championship). They deserve it," second-year head coach Mickey Miller said.

"They have done it together. They will remember this when they are 30 and have children and can tell them all about it. They will remember this for the rest of their lives."

Kelley, which won the 4A title in 2005 and a Class 5A crown in 2006, finished the season 16-2.

Buoyed by goals from sophomores Jorge Estrada in the seventh minute and Chris Carwile in the 33rd minute, the Hornets took a 2-0 lead after the first period.

For Miller and several Hornets, the score, situation and opponent brought to mind less than favorable memories. In Miller's first game as BTW coach a year ago, the Hornets led Kelley 2-0 at the break.

BTW had a penalty kick to go ahead 3-0 in the second period but missed the kick.

The visiting Comets then tied the game before winning later in a shootout.

"(The 2007 game) crossed my mind and I know our players knew about it," Miller said. "I didn't have to mention it. This team is not the same team as we were a year ago."

Said Carwile: "I played in the game and thought of last year when we were leading 2-0. We wanted to finish it off this time."

As was the case last year, BTW had a penalty kick in the second period to go ahead 3-0. But this year, the Hornets capitalized.

Although Kelley goalkeeper Quinton Hubbarth made a fine diving save of junior Nate Doll's attempt near the left post, the ball squirted away and Doll tapped in the rebound in the 53rd minute to give the Hornets a three-goal cushion.

"I think the biggest thing was that they wanted it more than we did," Kelley coach Donivan Bradshaw said. "They were a little more consistent than we were. We didn't play our best game today."

The Comets, suffering their first shutout of the season, entered the final having scored 60 goals in their previous 17 games.

But Kelley could not find the range against a stingy Hornet defense that was led by a back line dominated by seniors and anchored by sophomore goalie Sam Diacon, who had three saves.

Comet juniors Cameron Craig and Elliot Kane, who had combined for 23 goals in the season prior to the final, teamed up to take all but one of Kelley's seven attempts on goal.

Craig's 15-yard shot in the 49th minute was saved by Diacon.
