Q&A with Texas quarterback Colt McCoy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In many fans' eyes, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy went from a Golden Boy freshman to Grimy Bum sophomore.

After setting an NCAA freshman record with 28 touchdown passes (against seven interceptions) in 2006, last season McCoy was intercepted 18 times with just 22 TD throws.

But 10 of McCoy's picks came off tipped or deflected passes. The Texas offensive line was in disarray much of the season. The running game was non-existent the first half of the season. And big-play wideout Limas Sweed missed most of the season with a wrist injury.

No such thing as a sophomore slump, McCoy said.

"I hate that term," he said. "It's not a slump because I feel like I grew so much. I got better. I understand our offense. I gained a ton of experience in a lot of different ways last year that's going to help me this year. I'm just ready to play."

Q: What do you say to people who don't think Texas is going to the usual powerhouse this year?

A: There've always been high expectations for us. We play at the University of Texas. We know what to expect. Like I said earlier we're just focused on ourselves. We're focused on making sure we do these things right now in the offseason and then two-a-days to be the best that we can be. And we know if we do that, we're confident in ourselves that we can be pretty good.

Q: What do you think of Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel's assertion that you're the second-best quarterback in the Big 12 – him being No. 1?

A: He probably would say that. We are having a blast. We're having a good time. We enjoy hanging out with each other, especially in the summer. We've known each other since high school. We both played quarterback in Texas, played in the all-star game together.

Q: What kind of impression did Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford leave on you last year? You set the freshman touchdown record (28 TD passes), and then a year later he just blows it away (36).

A: He played great. He played great against us. And then after us I kind of jumped on his bandwagon. I watched him because he's done the same thing I did the year before, playing great., nobody really knows how tough it is for a freshman to come and stand in front of the offensive line that's for two years, and then be able to call the play in the huddle and they listen and respect you – that's super challenging. And I respect him for what he did. He had a great year and I'm sure he'll have another one this year."

Q: After such a great freshman season, things didn't go all that great for you last year. But with all the things that go into a season, did you learn all about quarterbacks getting too much credit and too much blame?

A: The experience that I gained from that means a lot. I know having 10 tipped balls in a season, and they're all picked off, those things don't help very much. But the experience of the offensive line is going to help tremendously. The guys around me, being able to get the ball in their hands. And like I said, going back to the basics, taking it one play at a time, understanding what you're going to do every time. Those things are so important. You can't get away from that. It's easy to feel comfortable and you feel like you know everything.
