LSU tackle transfers to Sooners
Jarvis Jones joins OU after being dismissed by Les Miles.

Jarvis Jones joins OU after being dismissed by Les Miles.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Sophomore offensive tackle Jarvis Jones has transferred from LSU to the University of Oklahoma and will be eligible to play football at OU in 2009.
Jones is enrolled at Oklahoma for the upcoming fall semester and attended practice Thursday, watching from the sideline while wearing shorts and a T-shirt, OU spokesman Kenny Mossman said.
Jones, a 6-foot-7, 295-pound native of Rosenberg, Texas, was dismissed from the LSU football team on July 17 for violating unspecified team rules.
Coach Bob Stoops on Thursday declined to be interviewed, but in an OU press release, said, "Jarvis is a talented guy who we recruited when he was in high school. We're excited that he has joined the team."
Out of high school, Jones was rated the No. 10 offensive tackle in the nation by
Scout.com
and was a member of the Houston Chronicle's top 100.
"The issues we had with Jarvis were internal and ones that we dealt with within the framework of our team," LSU coach Les Miles said in a July statement. "However, we just felt like it was time to go in a different direction."
Jones played seven games for the Tigers' national champion team last season as a true freshman but during spring practice was named a backup to Joseph Barksdale.
Jones' transgressions at LSU remain unclear.
Jones' arrival comes less than a week after Stoops kicked freshman wide receiver Josh Jarboe off the team following the Internet posting of a video showing Jarboe rapping about guns and shooting people.
Jarboe was allowed to come to OU after two felony weapon charges were reduced to misdemeanors.
Stoops said last Thursday that Jarboe would stay with the team, then dismissed Jarboe after meeting with him Friday morning.
Fans among the crowd assembled at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum during the Sooner Caravan were concerned about the message Jones' arrival might send.
"I'd be a little concerned, yeah," said Oklahoma City resident Judy Austin, a Tulsa native. "They kicked off a kid. That sets standards down the line."
Athletic director Joe Castiglione said during the gathering that character shouldn't be a concern among fans.
"Every decision we make is scrutinized backwards, forwards and sideways," Castiglione said. "When you work with the people we work with here every day, you don't have to worry about the character issues. They are going to take care of them.
"That, above everything, is why we're successful."
The Sooners have six seniors on the offensive line this season and will have limited experience there next year. Only juniors Trent Williams and Brian Simmons have gained extensive playing time in the past two years.

I have to think that OU knows exactly what this kid did, and are satisfied he is not a thug like Jarboe. If they are wrong, the egg will be hard to get off.

Based on who he recruited to, and let stay at, OSU (I.E. Prentiss Elliot) you kinda have to wonder exactly what does it take to have Les Miles kick you off of his team.

I was one of the first to say, get rid of Jarboe. Jarboe will land at another university and likely shine. It's all part of the maturation and education process for young adults. They're 19-20 years old. They're going to screw up.
Coach Stoops is helping educate BOTH young men...he sent a message to Jarboe (tough love is hard sometimes) and he's sending a message to Jones. 2nd chances are just that...a chance to redeem your character and yourself.
Let's give this kid a chance at redemption. It's what all of us would ask for in the same circumstances.
