Catchphrase from his rant expires.

STILLWATER On Sept. 22, 2007, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy emphatically proclaimed two basic facts: "I'm a man! I'm 40!"

It became a national catchphrase and probably will remain so for a while.

"That thing has gotten so worn out," Gundy says.

But from a factual standpoint, the catchphrase's expiration date has arrived. Tuesday is Gundy's 41st birthday.

"I don't look forward to birthdays anymore. To be honest, I'd rather be 40 than 41," Gundy said. "It'll be a normal birthday for me two-a-day football practice. Kristen (Gundy's wife Kristen) will bring a big cake up here for the team."

Now into his 40s, Gundy doesn't seem overly concerned about his diet. He admits to being addicted to Red Bull energy drinks. His Monday lunch consisted of a sandwich purchased at a convenience store.

"The old boy at the checkout said, 'You really shouldn't eat that. Those are extremely high in sodium,' " Gundy said. "I looked at the small print 1,300 milligrams of sodium. That ought to be against the law."

In spite of the sodium content, Gundy ate the sandwich.

"Yeah," he said. "Trust me, that'll be the last thing that gets me. A lot of other things will get me way before (sodium)."

Now, if the media would grow up, so they could be proclaimed a man. The media sure lowered themselves in my eyes.

FIRE GUNDY, Do you have a solution other than firing the coach? Who should replace him? Did he steal your girl in college or do you have a solution beyond termination? Is it personal or legitimate? Fire him and then what?

FIRE GUNDY, TULSA (8/13/2008 7:53:46 AM)
Yes-

Fire him and hire someone who is a good coach. Given the size of our program I would consider the following factors important, as they should have been 3 years ago- prior Division I head coaching experience before coming to OSU, a winning record, and finally the basic social skills to win over the fans and his players.

Look at the stats- even going back to 1990 (the start of his assistant coaching career) Gundy has a losing record. Look at Gundy's record as an assistant at the only 2 jobs he's had outside of OSU- 1996 a year at Baylor losing season, 1997-2000 at Maryland loser every year.

Gundy had success under Miles and was already at OSU. Those were his sole qualifications for the job.

I would say that when we hire the new coach next year we should take some other things into consideration.

Awesome news story on a 41 year old who purchased a convenience store sandwich. Glad I spent the time.
