Big 12’s top coach: Pokes’ Gundy?
By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer
Published:

Last Modified: 11/17/2008 5:02 AM
Members of the All-Big 12 voting panel face two extremely difficult decisions.
Who should be the all conference quarterback."
It’s just crazy that one league has four guys who are as prolific as Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, Missouri’s Chase Daniel and Texas’ Colt McCoy. All are among the top 10 nationally in passing yards.
Comparably thought-provoking — who is the Big 12 coach of the year."
If votes were cast today, Texas Tech’s Mike Leach would be your winner. But the No. 2 Red Raiders likely will lose this week at fifth ranked Oklahoma (because everybody loses at Oklahoma), and then Leach’s candidacy would have a slight blemish (especially if the Sooners win big).
Leach has worked wonders in Lubbock, Texas. OU’s Bob Stoops and Texas’Mack Brown have had exceptional seasons.
If there’s a viable fourth candidate, it would be Mike Gundy.
Only three years after Oklahoma State finished 1- 7 in Big 12 play — and only one year after the infamous “rant” that for a while was the defining moment of his head-coaching career — Gundy has been the point man in one of the better seasons in Cowboy football history.
Because of a difficult schedule, the Cowboys were expected to be only slightly better than .500. Having prevailed 30-17 at Colorado, OSU is 9-2.
If it can defeat OU in Stillwater (Nov. 29) and win in a bowl, OSU would savor the first 11-win season in school history.
In each of the last
six AP polls, the Cowboys have been ranked no worse than 11th.
OSU is among national leaders in total offense, scoring and rushing.
This week, a newspaper columnist was somewhat critical because Gundy is so exclusively focused on the Cowboy offense. When his defense is on the field, Gundy usually is removed from the immediate sideline while huddled with QB Zac Robinson and offensive personnel. Gundy calls the plays. As the defense plays, he is scripting the next offensive possession.
It’s not conventional, but so what."
Gundy is responsible for the bottom line — winning — and OSU has exceeded expectations. For that, he should at least be in the coach-of-the-year discussion.

Gundy has done a great job leading the Cowboys this season. A lot of credit is due to the coaches underneath Gundy, especially Tim Beckman.
Last time I check Gundy was not a defensive cooridinator. He is helping the team with what he knows best.

"This week, a newspaper columnist was somewhat critical because Gundy is so exclusively focused on the Cowboy offense."
That "newspaper columnist" mentioned is none other than The Oklahoman's OU toady and head shill, Berry Tramel. Of course Tramel's going to be critical of any success the Cwoboys have had. Tramel is an OU alum and head Bob Stoops suckup.
When OSU is winning and threatening the sanctity and power of Big 12 rival OU, the The Oklahoman staff goes into full discredit OSU mode.
When Barry Swtizer coached at OU, Switzer rarely got involved on game day. He just sat there and allowed his coaches to do their thing. That was fine with Tramel. No probrem. But when it's Gundy and OSU, then Tramel has a problem with it.
See the difference? The difference is that the Gaylord Memorial Family Newspaper has a puppet and his name is Berry.
Gundy has made a commitment to his assistants as far as contracts (paying them more than most programs) and allowing them to coach. Gundy is right to trust Coach Tim Beckman about the defense. Beckman knows defense. Gundy knows offense. Gundy is no so pretentious to gad about on the sidelines making defensive calls when he knows Beckman has his back.
Tramel's an OU snakeoil salesman and should concentrate more on what HE knows and that's pumping sunshiine up Swooner fan's backsides.
I think Mike Gundy is doing just fine with or without Berry Tramel's inane comments.

Wow.......A couple of wildly misplaced comments in this article. Firstly, anyone who believes that OU is going to blast tech just needs to look at the recent history of the contest. The games have been close. And for the comment about Gundy's managment you just need to look across the history of football to see similiar personalities. Who is more involved in an offense then Leach or Spurrier? But I don't see Leach's style being called into question. Haisten's comments are misguided.

consider the facts in the BIG 12 sportwriter base their life, hype and logic on a "IF" this is there way of saying I hope the Sooner play smart football instead of the way the always play after a week off. knowing that TEXAS TECH is on a mission of not being 2nd best in a league that has been dominated by OU and TEXAS to the 2nd best teams of OSU, TEXAS TECH, TEXAS A&M, and others. The Red Raiders have always been a sleeper of a team coming up the ranks getting better every year while OU a power house of talent is sometimes asleep at the wheel on defense and special teams. just 3 years ago TEXAS was on a similar mission and won.
The time of a new era in the BIG 12 is here right now the BCS will see OU, TEXAS, OSU, TEXAS TECH, KANSAS, MISSOURI maybe TEXAS A&M and TULSA within the TOP 25 for the next several years. YOU GOT LOVE THE BIG 12, MORE TV COVERAGE, BIGGER BUCKS FOR A SEASON TICKET, OBTAINING THE BEST IN A COACHING STAFF.
I know TULSA is not in the BIG 12 but for a home town football program that has arrived within its own, needs to mentioned. now go win #9 TULSA.

If Leach beats OU, Leach should be the Big 12 Coach of the Year. If Leach doesn't, and Gundy does, then Gundy should be the guy.
Haisten's right. Stoops has only lost twice at home if memory serves me correct. Then again, if any team can do it, Tech is the team. And how often does OU face an opponent as good or better than Texas at home? Not very often.

This writer must be sleeping on the job. The only way uo can stay with ttu is if they can keep the ball longer on each possession and be able to score each time. If not, look for a blowout of uo due to change in game plans.

As usual, OSU and staff more than likely will not get the credit they deserve. OU's success this year is about the same as any other year. Although I admire Bob Stoops, he hasn't done anything out of the ordinary for him to be considered for Coach of the Year. Mike Gundy and his staff have resurrected the Cowboys in a relatively short amount of time. He's done an incredible job and should be a frontrunner for the honor. The only other coach that should be in the running with him is Mike Leach because of what he's been able to do with the Red Raiders. Mack Brown and Stoops shouldn't even be in the running.
