RECORD: 8-3 overall, 5-2 in the Big Eight Conference
LAST GAME: lost to Nebraska 19-
NEXT GAME: vs. Virginia, 7 p.m., Dec. 29, Gator Bowl, Jacksonville,
Fla.
INJURIES: cornerback John Anderson, ankle sprain
NOTES: When Nebraska redshirt freshman tailback Calvin
Jones rushed for 118 yards on 17 attempts, it marked the
first time in 14 games that an opponent rushed for more
than 100 yards against Oklahoma.
Jones, who scored the winning touchdown on a 15-yard run,
became the first freshman ever to lead the Big Eight Conference
in scoring, averaging 8.40 points per game. Jones edged
teammate Derek Brown and OU's Mike Gaddis, who tied for
second at 7.64.
Nebraska's 249 yards rushing helped the Huskers clinch the
national rushing title with an average of 353.2 yards per
game. It's their ninth rushing title overall and their seventh
in the last 12 years.
Nebraska tight end Johnny Mitchell, who caught a career-high
seven passes for a career-high 137 yards, said the rain
made things "so slippery the first half, we couldn't get
a grip on the ball. We were the better team, and the scoreboard
showed it at the end."
Oklahoma linebacker Joe Bowden, the Sooners' All-America
candidate, led his team in tackles with 14. Bowden has 124
stops this season. He has been in double figure six times
this year. "We had such high hopes this year," Bowden
said. "We expected to win the Big Eight and to go undefeated,
and it just didn't work out for us."
Oklahoma's appearance in the Dec. 29 Gator Bowl against
Virginia (8-2-1) will mark the third time the Sooners have
played in the Jacksonville, Fla., contest. OU defeated North
Carolina State 34-13 in the 1947 Gator Bowl and dropped
a 36-19 decision to Clemson in the 1965 game. "I think
we'll come out for the bowl game pumped up and will probably
try to kill somebody," OU quarterback Cale Gundy said.
Oklahoma and Virginia faced two common foes this season
- Kansas and Virginia Tech. OU defeated the Jayhawks 41-3
and the Hokies 27-17. Virginia defeated Kansas 31-19 and
whipped Virginia Tech 38-0.
QUOTE: Nebraska coach Tom Osborne: "This is probably the
most enjoyable team I've coached. We probably came about
as close to being as good as they can be."
