OSU tops Tech
OSU players, including Dez Bryant (1) and Keith Toston (5), celebrate the Cowboys’ win over Texas Tech on Saturday in Stillwater. MICHAEL WYKE / Tulsa World

The New Tulsa World Sports Extra:
For the latest scores, stories, photos and stats on OU, OSU an TU football, as well as the rest of college football.
Wild game comes down to late TD, defensive stand
STILLWATER -- Ultimately, a crazy Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium was defined by Oklahoma State's defense.
While allowing Texas Tech to roll for 718 total yards -- the most yards ever by any Cowboy opponent -- the OSU defenders made big plays down the stretch and gave their offensive counterparts a chance to win.
Texas Tech was held scoreless on six of its final eight possessions and the Cowboys got the go-ahead touchdown with 1:37 left. Tight end Brandon Pettigrew caught a short pass and and raced for a 54-yard TD.
With 14 seconds left, after the Red Raiders had driven to the OSU 15-yard line, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell launched a pass that was intended for wide receiver Michael Crabtree in the end zone.
Crabtree had 14 catches. There would not be a 15th.
Cowboy safety Ricky Price got a fingernail on the ball, altering its path. Crabtree got his hands on the ball but could not make the catch.
As the crowd of 37,850 erupted into a wild celebration, the Cowboys escaped with a 49-45, nationally televised triumph in the Big 12
opener for both teams. The Cowboys (2-2) followed last week's 18-point loss at Troy (Ala.) with a dramatic victory over the prolific Red Raiders.
"Our guys made the play at the end," Cowboy coach Mike Gundy said. "So much happened out there. It's hard to actually recollect all that happened."
What happened was an offensive explosion.
During the first half alone, the teams combined for 767 total yards and nine touchdowns. The Red Raiders had a halftime lead of 35-28.
With Zac Robinson making his first home start at quarterback, OSU finished with 610 total yards (366 rushing).
For the first time in school history, three Cowboy players topped the 100-yard mark in rushing -- tailback Dantrell Savage had 130 yards, Robinson had 116 and freshman tailback Kendall Hunter had 113.
Robinson ran for two touchdowns (including a 48-yarder), while Savage and Hunter each scored once.
Savage had missed the two previous games with a groin injury.
Said Savage: "I was tired, but I wanted to be out there. I just had to get into a groove. We needed a little extra spark today, but it was everybody that made it happen."
Early in the fourth period, OSU wide receiver Seth Newton took an end-around handoff, pulled up and fired a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Broadway. The score was 42-42, and Tech answered with a 19-yard field goal by Alex Trlica.
Of great significance was an Oklahoma State defensive stop with less than two minutes remaining. Cowboy cornerback Jacob Lacey's pass breakup forced the Red Raiders to punt from their own 21-yard line, and on the next play Pettigrew scored the game's 13th TD.
For Texas Tech (3-1), Harrell's statistics were outrageous. He was 46-of-67 passing for 646 yards (the fourth-highest total in major-college football history) and five touchdowns.
After the game, both coaches were furious. During his postgame press conference, Gundy refused to take questions specific to the game. Instead, he angrily condemned an Oklahoma City newspaper article, published on Saturday, that Gundy said was unfairly critical of Cowboy backup quarterback Bobby Reid. Minutes later, Gundy did grant a brief interview to the Tulsa World.
In the other locker room, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was livid that his team failed to capitalize on such a huge offensive performance.
Until Tech erupted for 718 yards on Saturday, the most yardage ever totaled against OSU was 696 by the 1971 Oklahoma Sooners.

Well, the Pokes really needed this victory, and that got it. Appreciate the good article, before reading it - I thought only each offense dressed! Seems that OSU's defense did enough for the offense to win. A good W!
Thanks for the great coverage of sports!
Take care,
Bo

this was a battle of offenses because neither team has a defense. the was a game where the team that turned the ball over the least would win.

Bill,
From OSU fans, thank you and the Tulsa World editors.
Apparently one paper in this state can write an OSU article that's fair WITHOUT the ubiquitous "OU Superiority" mention.
The "state's largest paper" can't seem to master that.
At least there's on paper in the state that could be considered professional.
Keep up the good work and don't allow your standards to tumble down like The Daily OUklahoman Enquirer.

Thanks for the great article. I second what Danny had to say. I live in OKC and actually prefer your sports section. Keep up the good work.

Excellent display of offense, however our excitement should be tempered (just as Tech in their NCAA record setting performance) when defenses fail to even show up. Two things mar this important win: 5,000 empty seats for a game billed as a rivalry, and Gundy's temper tantrum following the game. He evidently forgot that he is supposedly a "professional". No class at all...

First of all Bo, THANK YOU and the other brave soldiers out there serving our country. Be safe out there. Once a fan- Although I hate to refer you to the article in The Oklahoman because you are reading the better paper of the two. Take a look at and you will understand Gundy's remarks. I have to say that I proud of his remarks and it also shows the professionalism of the Tulsa World for staying above the fray. It was a fun game to watch, but we still need to focus on the defense and lack of pressure being put on opposing QB's.

Bob: Apparently you don't read the OC Newspaper. Seems J. Carlson wrote a demeaning article about Bobby Reid with the approval of her boss which was pure garbage. If Bobby Reid could sue a newspaper, which he can't, I believe he could collect for deflamation of character. What a sorry piece of journalism. Do believe that is the worst sports article in my 60 years of following sports.

It was a great show of will. The team looked like the NCAA Champs that form our Wrestling team.

The only defense worse than OSU and Tech is Tulsa. If OSU - TU played, it would be a 78-77 final score.

Enjoyed my day at Stillwater. Although the defense struggled, they made the plays in the end. The offense looked good. Pettigrew is a athelete, one for the highlight reels. He is truly outstanding. I read the article in The Oklahoman this morning. Just another wanna be reporter who does'nt have a clue about the game of football. When I was in college, Mom's and Grandma's cooking was always the BEST!!!!!!!! Thank you Coach Gundy.

Jenni Carlson is referred to as "Poision Pen Jenni" in some circles. She appears at her best when reporting on OU's Women's teams.

The article in question wasn't "critical" of Bobby, it trashed not only Bobby, but his mother as well accusing her of "coddling" him. It begins by telling some story about Bobby's mom feeding him fried chicken. The rest of the article references "rumors" and innuendo. It's the kind of thing you might expect to read in US Weekly or STAR magazine. It has no basis in fact and in the end talks about eating fried chicken and being a coddled mama's boy. It was a ridiculous article and Gundy did the right thing.

Jenni Carlson has always been a terrible sports writer, and now we know she is a person without an ethical or journalistic cell in her body. I am extremely proud of Mike Gundy for calling her out. It was high time someone looked her in the eye and let her know that she is not some elitist because she writes for the DOK, and above being accountable for the drivel she writes. And I'm doubly proud that he did it in public. For those who say he 'wasn't professional', you don't have a clue. Ask his players and their moms if he is professional or not.
