Postgame rant haunts Gundy

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy still gets asked about his 2007 rant. ORLIN WAGNER/The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — From coast to coast, it's the rant that refuses to die. And the Midwest is doing its part to keep it alive.

On Tuesday, right here in the nation's heartland, the first question out of the box for Mike Gundy at the Big 12 Conference's football media days was about the angry tirade the Oklahoma State coach unleashed in a post-game press conference last September.

Several follow-up questions about Gundy's over-the-top reaction to a newspaper article he found offensive also were raised yesterday about an incident that is nearly a year old.

The Big 12 media's interest is merely a reflection of the national attention Gundy's rant continues to draw.

On Monday, a New York Times story asked: "With the benefit of hindsight, can Gundy's behavior be excused?"

A day earlier, on Sunday night's telecast of the ESPY Awards Show in Los Angeles, host Justin Timberlake used outtakes of Gundy's antics as part of a humorous skit.

So instead of talking about OSU's beleaguered defense entering this season with some added punch, Gundy remains a punch line. To his credit, the Pokes' fourth-year coach answered every question. Gundy never raised his voice, and often poked fun at himself.

"Somebody told me I ended up sixth overall on YouTube hits last year," said Gundy of the video-sharing Web site where millions have watched replays of his now-infamous act. "I'm guessing that's pretty good. But I still have yet for anyone to give me a way I could get a kickback off of that."

The rant has grown so many legs over the past 10 months that one wonders if it will go away as long as Gundy is coaching. Three-plus minutes of Gundy screaming "I'm a man! I'm 40!" and saying the article made him want to "puke" could end up being his legacy.

As another Big 12 football coach told me, "I always tell my assistants to never go on television if you can't control your emotions or if you think you're going to cry. You don't want to embarrass your university."

No matter what OSU officials have said publicly to support Gundy, they are privately mortified and embarrassed over the backlash and negative attention the rant still brings to the school and its football program.

The obvious question is, how much longer will OSU's movers and shakers put up with Gundy? Winning cures a lot of ills, but only if a coach wins big. In Gundy first three seasons at his alma mater, the Cowboys have gone 4-7, 7-6 and 7-6. That includes 1-7, 3-5 and 4-4 records against Big 12 competition.

It's Gundy's mediocre record, coupled with the rant, that prompted some media members here for the three-day event to speculate that Gundy and Kansas State's Ron Prince are the Big 12 coaches who enter the 2008 season on the hot seat.

Outwardly, it wouldn't seem that Gundy is feeling any heat. After all, OSU awarded him with a contract extension last November that bumped his salary up to $1.05 million this season and will continue to escalate to $1.55 through the end of the contract in 2013.

At OSU, of course, the only movers and shakers who matter are billionaire booster T. Boone Pickens and athletic director Mike Holder. Gundy maintained Tuesday that his relationship with Pickens and Holder remains solid.

But can Gundy feel secure about an AD that forced out OSU basketball coach Sean Sutton after just two seasons? Some insiders believe that the day Sutton left was the day Gundy replaced him on the athletic department's hot seat.

"Honestly, I don't have a clue what (speculation) is going on out there in the real world," Gundy said. "I just have a lot of faith in President (Burns) Hargis, and I have a lot of faith in Mike Holder.

"And I'm just thankful I'm in the situation to enjoy the ride."

When it comes to rants, Gundy's on a ride that may never end.

The last part of this article sums it all up perfectly. Gundy needed to go before the rant, that was just icing on the cake.

Oh, and this finishing gem- "I'm just thankful I'm in the situation to enjoy the ride"

Unbelievable.

The media seems to ignore the commendable actions of Gundy in defending a player that had been the target of bad writing. OSU may not field a football team that is made up of nothing but "All American" players, but they along with the coach deserve some common respect. Media writes can "rant and rave" in thier columns and are not be-littled on You Tube. To bad, because many do deserve it.

I completely agree with the comment of rice bear. The only sector of society that is interested in keeping the so-called "rant"
hate going is the media. Whenever a member of the media is viewed as being attacked, the overall media response is overwhelming coverage. Stop attacking defenseless kids (particularly minorities) and just maybe you won't receive criticism by coaches and fans. Since when has the media been off limits for criticism. I don't recall ever hearing about a reporter that could walk on water. Media, please move on.

tiger has one part of it nailed.

The other part that keeps the "rant" in the public eye is that it is so POPULAR. Fans love it. It is something that is both humorous to a point, and Gundy is mature enough to laugh at himself and those in the OSU Admin who have a say have done the same. The other part of it is that parents and players both like the fact that Gundy stood up for his player.

tiger is right. The only people who refer to this thing as an embarassment and a knock on Gundy are media people.

Even if Gundy starts winning big, the "rant" will always be remembered in a positive and humorous light by most.

Mr. Sittler

A 3 day 2008 college football preview event has just taken place and you decide to write about a nearly 1 year old event.

The only people who have decided to not let this die, is the media, and you, more specifically. Everyone else is done with last year's news.

Why aren't you?

Dave, at an event I went to on the 4th of July a young man huffed up and yelled out "I'm a man, I'm 40" but not even the OU guys laughed.... know why? It's a non-story, non-issue.
Dave you cried for Sutton saying he deserved another year. Now your demanding Gundy's head.
If I were the World, I'd fire you and hire a sports writer....
You get a big expense account, nice hotel, great food, booz and tickets to a great event (B12 Media) and the best you can do is the "RANT". Dave? Listen to me man I'm trying to save your job......

National polls on all the media sports sites like ESPN, FOX, CBS, etc were 90% in favor of Gundy blasting that pathetic sports editor Mike Sherman who directed the hit piece on Bobby Reid. Whether Jenni Carlson enjoyed her assignment is not the issue - what is clear is common sports fans overwhelming supported Gundy, and still do, while the majority of media putz's continue to blather about it as if common sports fans care what they think. Gundy will go down in history as a players coach who took on the uO all the time Gaylord media machine.

Oh Sittler, here we go again. What a surprise. Outragous claims backed up by nothing more than your request for us to take your word for it. What's funny is that Gundy has nothing on your childish rants you post week in and week out in this very paper. I know why the media can't let it go. But I have a feeling that your reasons for holding onto this like a five year old to his mom's leg are much more personal and unfortunately, immature. I do hope you read everybody's comments on this thread. And I hope that you're enough of a man to learn from them. End your vendetta with Gundy/Holder. It reeks of unprofessionalism and has become quite stale. Wost of all, it's just plain unoriginal. In fact, it has been for the last three years. I challenge you to write something, anything, with more substance. If you can't do that now, at the fresh new beginning of a football season, then you are utterly hopeless.

They're right, Dave. Time to move on to stories about THIS season. Quit embellishing the criticism and embarrassment of Gundy in a back door attempt to show compassion and support for a mediocre reporter like Carlson. She's simply not that good and deserved the rant from Coach Gundy.

I'm an OU fan and love to see anything in that color orange go down in flames of the same color. But, let's call this one as we see it.

You're beating a dead horse. It's funny...it's nearly a year old...and it's tired. The only "angle" that you could legitimately use is whether or not it has affected recruiting. But that would take too much work for you to run down recruits that considered (and didn't choose) Okie-state. I'm guessing you don't want to put in that kind of effort.

Let it go.

I wish this were a dead story, but let's face it, when Justin Timberlake is mocking Gundy on the ESPY's it's not Sittler causing it to happen. In this case Dave is just reporting reality. Gundy is an embarassment to the program and doesn't have the maturity to coach a little league team, much less Big 12 football.

As an OSU alum, I am proud of Gundy for taking a public stand for what is right. His player was attacked by the media and he had the backbone to defend. I do not consider it a rant or an embarassment reflecting my university. While I may not be proud of our team's record, I am proud that Mike stood up. I can't think of a better way to be remembered than of someone that has the character to stand up for what is right. Be it a rant or no rant.

I would much rather read about the rant, reading about the Defensive coordinators he has hired and fired would be worse. Reading the fact he has a much worse record than the previous coach would not be fun to read. Reading that T-Bone controls his every decision would not be fun to read....yes reading about the rant is much better

Dave....er... Firegundy,

Please let it go. Mike Gundy is going to be OSU's head coach for many years to come. It's best that you just make amends, and try to get along with him.

Perhaps if you start doing real journalistic work you wont be stuck at the Tulsa World the rest of your career.

Enough already. We've all seen, heard, and read ENOUGH of the RANT in the national media Dave. I know it's almost football season with basketball AND wrestling on the horizion. I also know this space is used for comment on football. Can anyone tell me why in a traditionally rich wrestling state we readers have to endure almost nothing written by the Tulsa World about wrestling?

keep up the good work dave. i enjoy reading your articles. it's been my experience that osu fans hate criticism warranted or not. for them everything has to be positive and uplifting. you get the feeling that had they been on the titanic they would not have complained about a lack of lifeboats, no they would have directed their ire at the band that stopped playing.

Dave......Mike Gundy appears to be a decent guy who defends his players from the attacks of the media (who incidentally were the ones never picked to play in "pick up games" when they were kids and who fanticized about scoring the touchdown that won the big game). My hat's off to Gundy for defending his players and I'm an OU fan. Incidentally, I never saw a coach score a touchdown, intercept a pass or make a tackle. It is the players that win or lose games, not the coaches. You can't win the Kentucky Derby on a mule and you can't win football games with inferior talent. Too much credit is given to coaches for winning or losing games when they contribute so little to the winning of games. NCAA rules do not even require that teams even have a coach.....period. My point is OSU will win through
the vehicle of recruiting good football talent. Colleges recruit wins when they recruit the best talent. Talent molds itself. It's hard to scew up when you have the best talent on the field. Just ask Barry Switzer. Remember the phrase "lead, follow or get out of the way". In some cases, "get out of the way" works with superior talent and high school talent view Gundy as a defender of his players. Lead them to the University, follow them briefly to make sure they comply with University & NCAA policies and get out of the way and let them use their god given talents to win games. Gundy......keep ranting.....prospective recruits love it.

All these geniuses that have condemned us to four years of Gundy need to share in his fate because I can think of no other group that has cost OSU as much as they have. Totally squandered all the momentum of Boone's donation.

Interesting how the people that continue to trumpet Gundy in the face of 18-19 just happened to be the very same one's that defended Reid and insisting that he remain the starting QB.

They consider themselves "real" fans because in their deluded minds supporting and defending continued losing is somehow good for OSU.

The fact is, everything Jenni Carlson wrote was correct and EVERYONE knows it. The geniuses that think the rest of the world is somehow being supportive of Gundy are embarrassing. The rest of the world is just like the OSU powers-to-be. They think Gundy's a comical bafoon.

Don't blame Sittler for reporting about the rant. Sittler didn't keep this rant thing going. Read the article. Read Tramels article in the DOK. The rant has a life of it's own. It ain't going away. Blame Gundy, it's his rant.

To begin with, Gundy's rant had a whole heck of a lot more to do with trying to devert attention away from the obvious than it did with him supposidly defending Booby Reid from some little girl reporter that made him cry.

The obvious?

The obvious: WHY THE HECK WAS REID STARTING IN THE FIRST PLACE?????

A failed three year experiment with disasterous results and the geniuses want more of it... want more 18-19. The potential momentum of Boone's donation... in the can. Nausiating!

I see the fans from the OSU sites have united in their quest to prove the media bias against poor little Poke U. Last I checked, Justin Timberlake isn't in Sittler's back pocket. Gundy is an absolute moron for his tirade. The fact of the matter is that he publicly humiliated his team, alma mater, OSU fans everywhere and his boss. You all just want this to go away because it is what it is. EMBARASSING!

If these people would read about the polls taken, and the support of coaches (including stoops) and fans which exceeded 90% favorable to Gundy, we wouldn't have these stupid comments from Sooners and ridiculous columns from wannabe sports writers like sittler which makes the Tulsa World look like they have a hiring problem. It is my intentions not to let the retort from Gundy ever be forgotten, and hope that more coaches will speak out.

How can you expect a guy that's such a loose cannon to battle wits with guys like Stoops and Mack Brown during a football game!

Gundy needs to lay off the Red Bulls!!
