OSU should move up in the polls, not down

AUSTIN, Texas — Has a team ever moved up in the national polls after a loss? If not, Oklahoma State has earned the right to become the first when the latest rankings are released Sunday.
Normal voter reaction after a loss is to drop a team a few spots, no matter how narrow the margin.
But there was nothing normal about Saturday’s OSU Texas showdown of undefeated teams. And if the voters and the computer geeks take time to study the top-ranked Longhorns’ 28-24 win over the Cowboys, they should come to a similar conclusion.
If Texas (8-0, 4-0 Big 12) is No. 1, as all those polls and computer readouts proclaimed last week, then where do you rank OSU (7-1, 3-1)? How about No. 1A."
There should be no doubt that the Cowboys deserve to be higher than the No. 7 and No. 8 spots they held respectively a week ago in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.
Even their No. 6 slot in the first BCS standings isn’t high enough.
OSU certainly made believers Saturday out of the largest crowd to ever attend a football game in the state of Texas when they pushed the top-ranked Longhorns to the hilt before 98,518 spectators at Memorial Stadium.
No opponent has fought Texas on its home turf this season with the ferocity and heart displayed by the Pokes.
Just a week earlier, then-No.
11Missouri came to Texas and got spanked, 56-31.
That’s why Mack Brown looked like he’d been in a fist fight as the pale and sweat soaked Texas coach greeted OSU coach Mike Gundy at midfield for a post game handshake.
“He really didn’t look very good at that particular time,” Gundy said. “I think ‘relieved’ is the right word.”
Brown wasn’t the only one happy that the Longhorns survived a classic Big 12 Conference showdown.
Texans everywhere were relieved when a Longhorn defender knocked down OSU quarterback Zac Robinson’s Hail Mary pass on the game’s final play.
“If they are No. 1 in the country, then we’re obviously not very far behind,” Robinson said. “We know we’re right there.”
The Cowboys also know they learned a lot about themselves in this battle.
They proved their best start (7-0) since 1945 wasn’t a fluke, achieved only because of inferior competition.
More importantly, this OSU team demonstrated it will fight instead of fold against a Texas program that has broken the Pokes’ hearts in recent seasons.
Instead of blowing big leads, like they’ve done against the boys in burnt orange three of the last four seasons, the boys in the bright orange almost made Texas blow a 14-point lead.
A year after Gundy declared his program wasn’t ready “for the big time” following an embarrassing loss at Georgia, the Cowboys’ fourth-year coach knows this team can compete on the biggest stages against the highest-ranked teams.
“We didn’t come down here to finish second,” Gundy said. “We thought we could win this game.
And our players played well enough to win the game today.”
Gundy pointed the finger of blame for the loss directly at himself. Also the o6ensive coordinator, Gundy criticized his play selection on OSU’s second-to-last drive.
After three runs by Kendall Hunter picked up a combined 21 yards, Gundy called three pass plays, which resulted in a sack, a 1-yard scramble by Robinson and then an inside screen to receiver Dez Bryant on fourthand- 6 that lost 3 yards.
“The playing on (that) drive was poor and my fault,” Gundy said. “The plays didn’t work, and that’s my responsibility.”
Play-calling isn’t the only thing the Cowboys will second- guess the next few days.
There was a Hunter fumble when he appeared headed for OSU’s first touchdown, and a roughing the passer penalty that wiped out an interception and eventually led to a Texas TD.
And the defense, which improved dramatically the past two games, made Texas quarterback Colt McCoy look like the Heisman Trophy frontrunner.
Using a short passing game, the savvy McCoy dinked and dunked his way up and down the field, completing 18 consecutive passes at one point.
In the recent past, OSU would have collapsed against Texas when it trailed 28-14 midway through the third quarter. But the defense regrouped and proved this is a new-look OSU team with pride, when it intercepted a McCoy pass and forced him to fumble as the Cowboys almost pulled o6 the upset.
“The Big 12 champion (OU) lost two games last year, and the national champion (LSU) lost two games last year,” Robinson said. “So we’re still right where we want to be.”
Hopefully, the voters will put OSU where it deserves to be — higher in the polls, not lower.

OSU played a great game against Texas. However, with your comment that they should move up in the polls because they played a good game shows me that your not a real sports writer. I have lost all respect for you and will no longer read your articles. The Cowboys played great and deserve congratulations on their play, but a lot of teams play good and lose and if every team move up in the polls when they played good and lost, where would we be.
Thought you were a legitimate sports reported, guess not.

Relax GoneBowling, Dave is just making a point. I don't see OSU moving much in the polls. That was a great game and I'm really proud of the Cowboys. They're for real. And yes the play calling in that last series was pretty dismal. Texas got lucky. They were basically playing for the national championship in that game.

Well, it's settled. OSU and Gundy can't win the big ones. They don't deserve to move up in the polls. they should be grateful they're ranked at all.

I have to agree that the Pokes played a heck of a game. That kid that roughed the passer on Texas' final scoring drive(i believe thats when it was) REALLY needs to grow up. He cost his team BIG. Granted, McCoy is known for exagerating a LOT when he gets "hit" players must know refs are going to call it.
I think OSU should be ranked 5. Based on performance and resume, they ARE better than FL, Tech, USC, and Georgia, in my opinion. OU can stay 4 since they actually led Texas for much of the game although our team has definitely not looked the same on defense since losing Reynolds.
Wish OSU could have pulled off the upset.
REALLY wish Bedlam wasn't in Stillwater this year!

GUNDY HIT IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD, AT LEAST HE FESSED UP TO IT, HIS PLAY CALLING WAS HORRIBLE, 4 MINS TO PLAY AND 3 TIME OUTS LEFT AND TEXAS GETTING GASHED BY HUNTER, HE CALLS 3 STRAIGHT PASS PLAYS???????????????????????? WHY WOULD YOU STOP DOING WHAT WAS WORKING, IF NOTHING ELSE REALIZE YOU NEED TO SCORE AND LEAVE TEXAS NO TIME ON THE CLOCK, 2nd and 5 run the ball Gundy, if you get a 1st or come up a yard or two short, you can play action on 3rd down knowing its makeable on 4th down if the pass is not there. AND then what in the world could you possibly have been thinking, call a timeout on 4th down and talk about the call, as loud as it was I am sure half the offense didn't even know the play called on that 4th down. Gundy cost them the chance to win it, plain and simple...

jas, your football knowledge is astonishing. Quick, let's get you in front of Mike Holder immediately so that he can see first hand what a mistake he made hiring Gundy instead of you. You'll lead OSU to the promise land, won't you?

As I tell my Arkansas Razorback acquaintances, there are sports fans and there are Razorback fans, and they aren't necessarily the same people. It describes Lana and all her tunnel- visioned Zero University compatriots as well. It was the most exciting game on ABC so far this season. Coach Gundy has the Cowboys playing well with a well balanced offense and determined defense. What impressed me most is that there is no quit in these Pokes.

I have to agree with Mr. Sittler on this one. OSU even with bad play calling essentially looked just as good as the #1 team in the country. They barely lost in front of the largest football crowd in Texas and one of the biggest home field advantages in the nation. They showed that they weren't previously overrated. They played better against Texas than the # 4 team in the country and did it in Austin. Talking about the loss of Ryan Reynolds is just an excuse. OU still lost and still lost by more than OSU at a neutral site. If this game had been played in Stillwater it looks like OSU would win. Rankings are supposed to be about overall performance not just wins and losses. If Texas really is the best team in the country then OSU deserves to be ranked very close to them.
That said, I think the rest of the country gave OSU a lot of respect and no OSU fan should be unhappy with the ranking of the school. OSU is ranked in a spot where they still control their own destiny and could still be playing for a BCS game. At the beginning of the season I didn't think it was possible, but OSU had a better pass rush than OU. Colt Mccoy still played amazing. He stepped into hits and threw balls almost perfectly. OSU probably doesn't go to a BCS game, but Tech doesn't look good enough to beat Texas. So, if OSU can get the upset in Lubbock, the Bedlam game will be for that second BCS game in the Big 12. If that happens, I hope to see the field goals marched down Hall of Fame in Stillwater.

Lana: have you even watched an OSU game, or a football game for that matter? OSU beat Mizzou on the road in a big game, nearly beat Texas on the road in a big game, and if you go back to last season they destroyed a supposedly superior Indiana in a bowl game.

GoneBowling, Sittler is right. How much longer than you has he been covering sports, again? Refresh my memory.
OSU certainly disserves to be higher after giving this Texas team, which beat now-No. 4 OU by 10 on neutral ground, its closest game of the year. OSU's drop is nothing more than overreaction at the technicality of a loss.
Theoretically, the true second-best team in the country would lose to the best team, right? And probably by something like, oh, I don't know, 4 points and one last-second missed touchdown pass? On the road? In front of the biggest crowd ever? So who's to say that OSU isn't the fifth-, fourth-, third-, or second-best team in the country? They definitely didn't make a case to drop in the polls.
OSU fans should be upset. You hit this one on the button, Sittler.

That should be "deserves." Don't know how it became "disserves"...
