Haters of Venables should get a clue
By DAVE SITTLER World Sports Columnist

The anti-Brent Venables crowd undoubtedly cheered Wednesday's news that Kansas State has fired Ron Prince effective at the end of this season.
Venables has long been the whipping boy for those anonymous geniuses who use phony Internet names to pick on Oklahoma's defensive coordinator whenever anything goes wrong with the Sooners' football program.
OU loses its two best defenders to knee injuries? It's Venables' fault. The Sooners entered this season with a lack of defensive experience in the back seven? Point the finger at Venables. Not enough soap in the showers? Yup, blame Venables for not ordering more.
The clueless Venables critics look at Prince's dramatically rapid self-destruction as a mulligan. They see it as an unexpected second chance for K-State officials to bring Venables back to his alma mater, an opportunity they bypassed when they hired Prince less than three seasons ago.
In their perfect-storm scenario, Mike Stoops will get fired at Arizona and return to OU to replace the departed Venables.
Time for a reality check. Mike Stoops won't get sacked, because it's a lock he'll take the Wildcats to a bowl. And if he's wise, Venables will tell K-State what it can do with its job.
Arizona (5-3) will become bowl eligible Saturday with its sixth win at hapless Washington State (1-8). If the Wildcats win seven or eight, which is definitely possible, Mike Stoops will get a contract extension.
Predicting that Venables will be smart enough to turn K-State down if it comes calling isn't as easy. There is no doubt that he loves the university in "The Little Apple," where he starred as a player and helped turn the program into a powerhouse under former coach Bill Snyder.
Venables will eventually get his chance to be a head coach. He's reportedly on the short list at Clemson, where athletic director Terry Don Phillips became a big Venables fan when Phillips was Oklahoma State's AD.
If it doesn't work out this year at Clemson or some place other than K-State, Venables needs to be patient. He's only 37, and he knows Stoops will always have his back at OU.
Stoops, who also worked for Snyder, has apparently already demonstrated how strongly he feels about Venables' potential as a head coach. K-State insiders believe OU's coach had a long visit with Snyder about Venables when the Sooners played in Manhattan, Kan, on Oct. 25.
The rumors that K-State officials were ready to declare the Prince experiment a dismal failure only grew when the Sooners scored 55 first-half points on the Wildcats en route to a 58-35 win.
That speculation became fact yesterday when K-State AD Bob Krause confirmed that Prince is out at the end of this season. With three games left in the third season after replacing the legendary Snyder, Prince is 16-18. The Wildcats' next coach will inherit a program in serious trouble. In just 34 games, Prince has turned Snyder's "Manhattan Miracle" into the "Manhattan Mess."
The depth of K-State's problems was evident when Prince signed a whopping 19 junior college players last February. His quick-fix solution bombed, which means it will take his successor considerable time to repair that recruiting disaster.
Speculation has raged throughout the Wildcat Nation that Snyder has the coaching itch once again, and might be willing to see if he can perform a second miracle on a program that has fallen behind bitter in-state rival Kansas and former OU and K-State assistant Mark Mangino.
The Big Cigars at K-State reportedly believe they can lure a head coach away from an established program who has experience with the Wildcats. Two names that surfaced immediately were Wisconsin's Brent Bielema and TCU's Gary Patterson.
Wisconsin is 4-5 in Bielema's third season, and the former Snyder assistant is feeling the heat. Patterson, a Kansas native who worked at K-State (1982) before Snyder arrived, is one of the hottest coaching prospects in the country after what he's done in eight seasons at TCU.
TCU's (9-1) only loss this season came at OU on Sept. 27, 35-10. But Patterson is one of only two coaches (Les Miles) to defeat a Stoops team in Norman, stunning the Sooners in the 2005 season opener, 17-10.
Another report suggests Snyder could come back and hire former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney as his designated successor. Now the associate head coach at Florida, McCarney played and coached at Iowa when Snyder was the Hawkeyes' offensive coordinator under Hayden Fry.
So maybe K-State won't pursue Venables. For those who "get it," that would be good news for the Sooners.

I never understood the media's love for Venables? I dont get it. I laugh when Al Eschbach tries to mention him for every opening and that loud mouth Traber defends him to no end. What has he exactly done to be mentioned for other jobs? except get burned consistantly by the good teams and now the bad teams. I really don't understand just because some guy coaches at OU doesn't make him the greatest coach or best canidate for a job just because he coaches at all mighty OU. I don't even think Venables is even the best D coord in the state to be honest.

newsflash for mr. sittler. im not sure if im the internet genius using a phony internet name you refer to in your blabbering pathetic story but reality is mr. sittler there is absolutely no way you or anyone else can defend the 39.2 points a game average ou has given up in its last 5 losses dating back to boise st.
all we hear are excuses (for brent vanables) about how tough it is to defend these spread offenses yet the week before ou was shredded again by k st colorado allowed 13 and the week after kansas allowed 21. isnt it odd that colorado and kansas can defend k st offense yet ou defense was shredded as usual? seems no one else has a problem defending it except ou and then its nothing but excuses. a player stubbed his toe, the linebacker got a hangnail and couldnt play. its always something but the fact that ou cant defend period. the talent without question is there. the players wrap up well and have the necessary speed and physical play. the reason ou defense gets lit up is plain and simple no matter how much it pains you to admit. brent venables isnt a good d coordinator period.
ill end this discussion with 1 plain and simple fact. houston when searching for a head coach went to ou and hired the tight end coach (sumlin) and not the d coordinator (venables). why is that mr. sittler? its plain and simple everyone knows venables is in way over his head except you apparently.

Dave in Houston, LMAO, yeah!
Whatever, Dave, sure, Venables is a good D coach. It's just his kids aren't executing what they are being coached yet Venables is HC material.
BTW, I heard Bob Stoops is coaching OU's secondary this season, the one that's getting torched every weekend. Can't say you can blame that all on coach Stoops but I do know they have some talented guys back there....hmmmm.

Dear Dave...here's my suggestion. If you want to write an interesting article about Coach V...do so. Get the facts straight and make your case. Might want to gleen some facts from the posts above, because I believe these guys have a valid point. What has Coach V done to justify his position, which by OU standards is near NFL quality in coaching stature. Love the guy for his intensity, but that doesn't reflect in the numbers. Still don't see Bob dragging this out without some type of corrective action...ie "Coach The Staff...Bob"...either that or let's have a change. Change, however sometimes isn't all its hyped up to be...just my opinion...

Dave great article most of the more intelligent less volatile fans recognize the value of coach v. He may be one of the best recruiters in college football. I didn't hear any real complaints about the d until the texas game. when rr went down the qb of the d went with him. No one was in place to fill the gap. The vocal minority (above) has no clue what it takes to be successful in college football with the parity of talented players coming out of h.s. these days. Stoops and his staff are still amongst the elite of div.1 and I like the majority of ou fans recognize the success of ou football has everything to do with the coaches and staff. Yes coach v is a big part of that success.
