HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL WEEK 5: UNION 55, OWASSO 7

OWASSO — For the first time this season, Union demonstrated its offensive potential for an entire game, and that could be frightening to Class 6A's other state title contenders.

Union quarterback Chase Boyce had 289 total yards as he threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another to help third-ranked Union deck No. 8 Owasso 55-7 in a District 6A-4 game at Owasso Stadium.

"We had a great week of practice and everyone was on the same page tonight," said Boyce, who completed 20-of-24 passes for 272 yards. "We finally put a full game together. I had great protection up front. Our goal was to score on every possession we got the ball and we were close."

The Redskins' only scoreless possessions before taking a knee to end the game were due to a fumble and missed field goal.

Jeremy Smith added four TDs, all in the first half, as he rushed for 123 yards on 22 carries.

Boyce, in his first season as a starter, opened the game with eight straight completions. His top receiver was Tracy Moore, who had seven catches for 116 yards and two TDs.

The Redskins' offensive onslaught came against a Rams defense that averaged allowing only 18 points in their first four games that were all against then-top 10 opponents.

"I'm real excited about the way our team was prepared," Union coach Kirk Fridrich said. "Our players were hitting on all cylinders when the game started. Our coaches did an outstanding job, but more importantly our seniors did in the way they prepared for the big game."

One of those seniors was safety Howard Scarborough, who also is one of Union's captains. Scarborough had an interception, just after Union's lone turnover, to set up a touchdown that made it 28-0. He helped lead a defensive effort that did not allow a first down until there was 5:02 remaining in the first half.

Owasso tailback Jacques Washington, who rushed for 1,755 yards last year, was held to 31 yards on 12 carries as he returned to action after missing last week's game with a foot injury. Another Owasso running back, Soda Waltman, who rushed for 209 yards last week, was limited to 18 yards on six carries.

"We just focused on coming together as a team and swarming to the ball — that's what we worked on," Scarborough said. "We wanted to come out and set the tone as a defense."

Union (4-1, 2-0) led 35-0 before Owasso (1-4, 1-1) produced a first down. The Redskins needed less than a half to set their season high for points as Smith's 3-yard TD run with 33 seconds remaining before intermission gave Union a 42-7 lead as Boyce directed a flawless two-minute drive.

"He kind of put a stamp on the quarterback position, saying he is no longer inexperienced," said Fridrich, who faced Owasso for the first time since coaching the Rams to the state semifinals in 2006.

Boyce had completions of 6 and 55 yards to Moore to begin the game's opening drive. On the third play, Smith scored from the 3 to give Union a 7-0 lead after only 73 seconds.

Union's next three TDs came on drives of only 37, 29 and 35 yards.

Smith capped Union's second possession with a 2-yard TD run on the play after Thomas Roberson's 32-yard catch converted a third-and-18. Roberson's 30-yard punt return was followed four plays later by Boyce's 9-yard TD pass to Moore for a 21-0 lead with 3:31 left in the first period.

Scarborough's interception set up Boyce's 4-yard run to begin the second quarter. Smith's 1-yard TD run capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive that made it 35-0 with 6:33 remaining in the first half.

Four minutes later, Owasso QB Joe Lindsey provided Owasso's lone offensive highlight with a 20-yard TD run.

"When we pull together as a team, we have the potential to do what we did tonight," Fridrich said.

Just letting the Union bunch know that they better get thier dibs on De'Marco Cobbs before Jenks or Muskogee do. He is the best I have seen since Robert Meachum. Who ever wins the recruiting war on this cat, will win the Gold Ball in 09'.
