Now healthy, OSU commit helps Rams

OKLAHOMA STATE commit Brandon Webb's return from knee surgery has made a big difference for the Owasso Rams.

Without Webb, a Tulsa World All-State offensive lineman last year, the Class 6A Rams opened the 2008 season with three narrow low-scoring losses to highly ranked teams. Since Webb's return and the insertion of sophomore Joe Lindsey at quarterback, the Rams are 3-1 with their only loss coming to top-ranked Union. In Owasso's three wins, the Rams have averaged 48.7 points.

"The first three games were really tough to watch," Webb said. "They were all close, and I had the urge to play. I was excited to come back against Enid. I don't know what happened to us against Union, but we're going to be good to go for the rest of the season."

The Rams, who beat Ponca City 42-19 on Thursday, move up two slots to No. 8 in the Tulsa World's 6A rankings this week. Union remains No. 1 and Jenks No. 2.

Besides coming back from knee surgery, Webb also had another transition to make when he returned to action.

"He's playing a different position this year than he did last year," Owasso coach Bill Patterson said. "There's a lot of things he didn't get to go through during spring practice. There's a lot of things he's going through for the first time. Playing guard is different than tackle. You're right in there in the middle and doing a lot of different type of skills. He's kind of learning a new position.

"He's been very dominating at times, and it was a big boost to the offense to get him back. He has been a big difference for us."

Webb has been selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 3 at San Antonio.

Plainsmen rejoin rankings: Enid is back in the 6A rankings at No. 10 after a 33-17 victory over Yukon on Thursday. Tulsa commit Clint Chelf tossed three touchdown passes to set the Enid career record with 31, including 16 this season.

Hornets reach No. 1: Booker T. Washington climbs to No. 1 in the 5A rankings after a 63-0 victory over Hale combined with previous No. 1 Guthrie's 16-13 loss to Midwest City Carl Albert, which improves two slots from No. 4 to No. 2. Guthrie falls to No. 3. Washington, which was last ranked No. 1 briefly midway through the 2006 season in 6A, posted its largest margin of victory since 2004 — the last year it reached the state title game.

Cardinals roll along: Collinsville moves into the 4A rankings for the first time this season at No. 9 after an 18-0 win over Jay.

"It was a workmanlike performance," Collinsville coach Lance West said. "The atmosphere usually seems to be funky, and you can get listless when you play on a Thursday instead of on Friday. You get into a routine during the season, and it's a change when you play on Thursday. But our defense played great and we took care of business."

Collinsville held Jay to 77 total yards. The Cardinals' TDs came on an 8-yard pass from Lane Coulter to Thomas Isam, Dalton Salisbury's 18-yard run and Merin Oakley's 7-yard run. Kyle Rush had 16 carries for 110 yards.

The Cardinals visit No. 10 McLain on Friday.

Checotah jumps ahead: Checotah, which has qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1995, moves from No. 5 to No. 3 in the 3A rankings after a 54-41 victory over Metro Christian on Thursday. The teams combined for five touchdowns in the final five minutes as Checotah's early 28-point lead was cut to seven before prevailing. For Checotah, it was reminiscent of nearly wasting a big lead in a 45-42 victory over 2A No. 8 Eufaula in Week 2.

"I don't know if we won too much in the last five weeks that our kids just wanted a close game, but they about gave me a stroke," Checotah coach Brandon Turley said with a smile.

Photo Day: The Tulsa World's annual Winter Sports Photo Day will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Edison High School's Jim Sellers Fieldhouse. All area high schools are encouraged to attend.

Coaches from basketball, wrestling and swimming teams are asked to bring or send their top five athletes, who will be asked to fill out a fact sheet and have head-shot photos taken. That process usually takes each team about 30 minutes.
