Crystal Reeves wins by six strokes; Jenks' team run ends

EDMOND - Broken Arrow High School girls golf coach Jim Burdette wanted to capture the moment for his memory bank.

"This is what I call one of those mental picture memories," Burdette said as her star player Crystal Reeves was finishing out the 18th hole and her run to the Class 6A girls golf individual state championship Thursday afternoon at River Oaks Golf Club.

"I have about four or five of these of her. But this one is special."

While it would have been truly special to cap her 18th high school tournament title with a birdie at the final hole, Reeves settled for a two-putt par from just off the green.

Oh well. For the 36-hole state tournament, par was Reeves' best friend.

The Broken Arrow senior shot 4-over-par-75 Thursday to post a two-round total score of 151, which was good enough for a six-shot win over Norman North's Kaitlin Higginbotham.

In the team race, Edmond Memorial ended Jenks' run of four consecutive state titles by winning its first golf state crown in 16 years. The Bulldogs shot a two-day total of 651 to best Jenks' 675. Broken Arrow was third at 685.

Winning state was the last piece of an already splendid high school golf resume for Reeves. She had finished sixth the past two years, and did not seriously challenge the eventual winner.

This year, though, pressure did not enter her mind-set.

"All I was thinking out there was control my shots and control my thoughts," Reeves said. "My tempo was pretty good all day. I wanted to slow everything down and just think of today as a completely separate tournament. I wanted to go out and have the low score of the day."

Reeves accomplished that with her 75.

Reeves was the only player in the tournament to shoot consecutive rounds under 80 in very windy conditions. Wednesday's opening round had wind speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour. The wind out of the south topped the 30 mile-per-hour mark in the late morning Thursday, but settled down to around 20 miles per hour throughout the afternoon.
