ITA ALL-AMERICAN TENNIS

It is not exactly homecourt advantage, but the ITA All-American tennis finals will feature two players from the University of Tulsa and one from Oklahoma State in nearby Stillwater.

Sunday's 10 a.m. singles final in the Case Tennis Center has the No. 1 player Oleksandr Nedovyesov of OSU. The noon doubles championships features a newly formed doubles team of Philip Stephens and Arnau Brugues of Tulsa.

Nedovyesov won quarterfinal and semifinal rounds Saturday to continue his unbeaten fall season, defeating Southern Cal's Robert Farah in the semis 6-2, 6-1.

Farah was a familiar foe.

"We played once in the spring NCAA (at Tulsa), and I won in three sets," Nedovyesov said. "I knew he was good."

But on Saturday, Nedovyesov was much better.

"I played my best match so far," he said. "That's pretty good for me."

Nedovyesov served well and hit sharp returns to keep Farah, who was part of the 2008 winning NCAA doubles championship team, on his heels.

Nedovyesov will face LSU's Michael Venus in the final. Venus defeated Enrique Olivares of East Tennessee State 7-6, 6-1.

Brugues and Stephens trailed 4-2 in their semifinal doubles match with North Carolina's Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman. The Hurricane duo then lost only two games after that to advance 7-5, 6-1.

Brugues of Spain and Stephens of England have an opposite approach to the game.

"We bring different elements to the game," said Stephens, who is a transfer from Fairleigh Dickinson in New Jersey. "We both have good serves, but I am good at volleys and Arnau is good at ground strokes."

The differences don't stop there.

"We are really different in our game and personality," Brugues said. "But, we are a good mix."

Stephens agreed.

"We have the best of both worlds," said Stephens, who grew up in London and trained on the national team. "We complement each other in attitude. I think we are a good team."

Sunday's finals will see if playing close to home is an advantage.Scores, B16
