Tigers seeing red

Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel (left), shown getting hit during last year’s Big 12 Championship, says OU is the “cream of the crop” but notes that he andhis teammates would welcome another meeting in the league’s championship game this season. STEPHEN HOLMAN/Tulsa World file

Missouri stars want rematch with OU in title game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Let's cut right to the chase in the Big 12 Conference football race — Missouri wants another crack at Oklahoma.

Chase Daniel and Chase Coffman delivered that message on Monday's first day of the Big 12's media days. The annual three-day gabfest is a midsummer ritual, used to ignite a league-wide frenzy as we count down the dog days until the season gets under way in six weeks.

Daniel and Coffman undoubtedly jump-started the Sooner Nation's interest. But before OU supporters get too riled up, they need to keep one important thing in mind: The Tigers and Sooners won't meet in the regular season, so the matchup could only happen in the Big 12 championship game.

Oh, and there also is this: Daniel and Coffman heaped praise on OU as they made the media rounds at the Marriott Hotel, answering questions fired at them for more than two hours by sportswriters and sportscasters.

"I'm glad we don't play them (Sooners) during the regular season," said Daniel, the senior quarterback who finished fourth in the 2007 Heisman Trophy voting. "Seriously, I'm glad we don't have to face them. And I'm sure everyone would say that.

"They're the cream of the crop in the Big 12 right now. And if we meet them in the Big 12 championship game, that would be awesome."

Last season's Big 12 title game in San Antonio was the last time the Sooners saw Daniel, Coffman and the rest of the Tigers. Ranked No. 1 going in, Missouri exited the Alamodome after a 38-17 loss, which came six weeks after OU had whipped the Tigers 41-31 during the regular season.

Those were Mizzou's only two losses While the Tigers capped a 12-2 season with a 38-7 thumping of Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl, they have spent the offseason dealing with the fact that the second OU defeat cost them a spot in the BCS national championship game.

So, you can understand why Coffman, the standout senior tight end, said yesterday that OU "got us good last year. They're a great team. Hopefully we'll get another shot to play them."

If the media's preseason poll is accurate, the Tigers and Sooners will indeed return to this city on Dec. 6 to play in the Big 12 title game at Arrowhead Stadium. The Tigers were a unanimous selection to win the Big 12's North Division, while the Sooners were picked to win the South Division by 49 of the 51 voters.

A spot in the BCS national championship game also possibly could be on the line the first Saturday in December. A national title shot has been a goal for Missouri ever since they thrashed the Razorbacks in Big D last January.

"We haven't even won a Big 12 championship around here, so why are we talking about a national championship?" an exasperated Tiger coach Gary Pinkel said. "Are you kidding me? That (talk) is ridiculous.

"That's people not handling (success) the best way they can handle it. I'll handle that internally; give me their names."

Well, OK. When an Omaha World-Herald reporter asked All-Big 12 linebacker Sean Weatherspoon after the spring game if Mizzou was a national championship team, the senior said, "I definitely think so."

Daniel, the absolute heart and soul of this Missouri team, would not go quite that far on Monday. But the feisty three-year starter, said, "time will tell. I can't predict the future right now. But the way we're going, and the way we're working, it can be a special season."

Another reason the Tigers have a strong shot at stopping OU from winning a record third consecutive Big 12 crown is that Coffman, Daniel and three other Missouri standouts opted to play their senior seasons. OU was not as fortunate; the Sooners lost three excellent juniors to the NFL Draft in wide receiver Malcolm Kelly, cornerback Reggie Smith and linebacker Curtis Lofton.

Lofton and Daniel had a tenacious battle in San Antonio, often jawing at each other face mask to face mask after the OU defense repeatedly frustrated the Tigers' high-powered offense. Mizzou was held to its lowest scoring and yardage totals of the season, Daniel was sacked twice, and Lofton intercepted one of his passes as the Tigers managed just one touchdown after driving inside the red zone five times.

"We settled for field goals, and that's a perfect example of why we didn't win the Big 12 championship," Daniel said.

Daniel, who passed for 4,037 yards and 33 touchdowns last season, said yesterday that OU's game plan of only rushing its four linemen and dropping seven players into pass coverage was the key to the Sooners' smashing victory in the 2007 rematch.

"Oklahoma is not perfect at everything they do," Daniel said. "But they are really, really, really good at everything. And that's what makes Oklahoma a little bit different.

"Coach (Bob) Stoops is a great coach, and they've had our number the past three or four years."

One is the number Daniel and Coffman will chase all season. Not only the No. 1 ranking, but they hope for one last crack at the Sooners.

A good season (2007) does not make a great program. Chase Daniel is the best QB Mizzou has seen in a long while, and he will win some games; but Missouri won't win the Big XII, or even just the North. Sorry, sportswriters; you got this one very wrong. Gary Pinkel will always find new and unique ways to lose, in spite of Daniel. The Tiger is only made of paper. Despite the hype to the contrary, the Big XII North will be decided by Kansas and Nebraska, one of which will get the dubious honor of facing (probably) OU. Daniel doesn't have to worry about the lion's den this year.

Might as well make it three in a row.

Let's not put OU in the Big 12 Championship game just yet, shall we? There are 4 other teams in the Big 12 South that they need to go through first (excluding Baylor, of course).

I look for Mizzou to be extremely good on offense, just like they were last year. However, they gave up some points on defense, and if that doesn't get corrected, they'll lose more games than they did last year. Jeremy Maclin may be one of the top 2 or 3 athletes in America, and as reported, he's gotten bigger and faster (can that be?). Chase Daniel is a great QB, but as we've seen, he can get frustrated quickly, which diminishes his abilities. That said, the defense will be the key for the Tigers, and I think they will continue to ride the wave of success right into frigid Arrowhead Stadium in KC, and play OU for the Big XII title.

What a great season this is going to be. It's exciting to watch the teams like Mizzou and Kansas climb the ranks...and this year...to watch Nebraska build back toward excellence. I cannot wait for the season to start.

No sensible fan makes predictions this early. Far, FAR too many variables play into the success of any season. But, it's enticing to think about such a rematch.

Regardless...unless the two Chases are healthy...Mizzou will be nowhere near the top. If they're healthy...it's anyone's ball game.

My predictions:

Watch Nebraska rise again.
Watch K-State continue to fall.
Watch Colorado implode.
Watch OU beat Texas again...
Watch Tech beat Texas and battle OU for a South title
Watch OSU fail woefully (bold prediction...Baylor beats the cowboys).

"Watch Nebraska rise again."

Don't forget:

OU will beat Texas, but 2-3 losses to teams they should beat. OU will also Blow it big in the (Insert Name Here) Bowl

Nebraska will again be mediocre, Callahan did more damage than huskers will allow themselves to believe

The season Highlight for Texas will be coming from a 50-0 deficit to beat Oklahoma State

Colorado will be better (and Beat Nebraska again), but the Sooners probably won't get a rematch against the Buffs (who probably cost OU a humiliating defeat in the National Championship), because...

Mizzou will take the north, and probably loose in the Conference Championship to the Sooners.

OU will then blow it big, forgetting to show up for the (Insert Name Here) Bowl.

The predictions are based on History, and we are destined to repeat it again.

45_Fires_BDE,

Husker "red" is scarlet, as in O'Hara. Didn't she wear a Black Skirt in that film? I think she is starting at DE for the Black Skirts anyway.

Wow, some folks really know absolutely nothing whatsoever about football here, that's not what one expects from Oklahomans. Let's see...

"Missouri won't win the Big XII, or even just the North."

Missouri won the North handily last year, and is better this year. Of course they will win the North, and assuming they won't win the conference is immensely foolish, even were it not for the fact that the championship game will be played in, you guessed it, Missouri.

"the Big XII North will be decided by Kansas and Nebraska."

Both of which beaten soundly by Missouri last year, particularly Nebraska. NU has a new coach and...oh, wait, this person's name is "Blackshirt," so expecting anything making sense is really kind of unreasonable. Sure, you keep on thinking it's 10 years ago. The program will be back, eventually, but not this year, and never dominating the north to the degree you once did, for...

"even I know that the Big 12 North is a joke."

Actually, nobody "knows" that, because it's absolute idiocy. You're talking about a division with 2 teams in the midst of the national championship hunt until the final week of the season, both of which should have been in BCS bowls, and both of which had strong bowl wins. Every team in the north will be stronger this year with the possible exception of KU, and you've shown yourself to be years out of date with this "The north is no good" talk, which wasn't true last year and will be even less so this year. Every team in the north is a bowl possibility, which cannot be said of the south, and the top of the north division is as strong as any in the nation.

"Chase Daniel is a great QB, but as we've seen, he can get frustrated quickly, which diminishes his abilities."

Have any of you people ever actually WATCHED a football game? I swear, I've never seen so many people make such strong statements knowing so very, very little. In fact, Daniel is about the coolest, most composed quarterback in the nation, LEAST likely to "get frustrated and diminish his abilities. Short of losing to Oklahoma, one of the two or three most talented teams in the nation, where do you get the silly idea that Daniel is some hothead?

"they gave up some points on defense, and if that doesn't get corrected, they'll lose more games than they did last year."

They "gave up some points" because they scored so quickly. In fact, again, had you actually watched the games you'd have seen that the defense improved dramatically as the season went along. Returning 10 of 11 starters, including the best safety in America and All-American candidates at linebacker and lineman, the idea that MU's defense is weak is simply false.
This one was interesting...
"Watch Nebraska rise again."

Probably, but accomplishing much this season is far-fetched, adjusting to a new system and staff. They'll be good, but not challenge for the conference title this year.

"Watch K-State continue to fall."

Not sure why you think this, other than wishful thinking. In fact KSU will be very strong, nobody does a better job of bringing in the juco guys and fitting them into the system, and KSU has some of the best juco guys in the nation coming in (as does another team, see below)

"Watch Colorado implode."

Hilariously wrong. Colorado's improved dramatically the last two years, and will continue to do so. Hypolite's one of the best DLs in the nation, they have strong QB play, and will be a strong contender. Implode? Don't bank on it. Oh, and best freshman RB in the nation doesn't hurt, either.

"Watch OU beat Texas again..."

Yeah, probably. OU's got the top talent, by far, in the Big 12 and in the nation only Ohio State and USC are in their catagory. But we've seen repeatedly that doesn't neccessarily mean the trophy.

"Watch Tech beat Texas and battle OU for a South title."

Drinking the Koolaid, too, I see. Tech is NOT at Texas level talent-wise yet, not at all. They're certainly better than Tech teams of the past, but better than UT? Not yet.

"Watch OSU fail woefully (bold prediction...Baylor b

(Yes...limit the post size, but don't TELL people you're doing so, just cut them off arbitrarily, really professional, TW)

"Watch OSU fail woefully (bold prediction...Baylor beats the cowboys). "

Bold is a nice way of putting it. "Nuts" would be better. OSU isn't going to fall in any way, "woefully" or otherwise, unless devistated by injuries. Baylor has 2 or 3 players capable of making all-conference, but top to bottom is by far the weakest team in the league, and no way do they beat OSU. OSU's offense will be tremendous, and like KSU they bring in some top-notch jucos, IF they come around (a bigger if than KSU's, I think) OSU's as much a threat to finish 2nd in the south as Tech...not likely, but possible.

Oh, one other thing, while we're ranting...OU is red. It's red. You and Nebraska have the same color, it's the same! The "We're not red, we're Crimson" thing makes you look like clowns, it's as obnoxious as the nausiatingly pretentious "THE Ohio State University" hogwash those arrogant jerks constantly bore the rest of the nation with.
