Sims absent: David Sims, a safety that transferred from Butte (Calif.) Community College, hasn't reported to training camp yet and isn't expected until around the time that classes begin on Aug. 25. Sims, who is expected to compete immediately for kickoff and punt return duties as well as possibly at defensive back, reportedly still has academic obligations to fulfill before arriving at OU. The Sooners open the season on Aug. 30 against Tennessee-Chattanooga.

McCoy nominated: Oklahoma sophomore defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been nominated for the 2008 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

McCoy, an Oklahoma City native, is among 71 nominees nationwide. A panel of judges will select two 11-player teams in all college football subdivisions.

McCoy is president of OU's FCA chapter, was freshman liaison for OU's Bridge Builders program (in which he volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the local United Way agency), is an active participant in the White Ribbon Campaign, donated time to the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity, and was nominated for the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy, which is presented by the National Alliance of African-American Athletes.

Marrow donors sought: The OU football team and other members of the athletic department will participate in a voluntary bone marrow screening on Wednesday to determine their viability as potential donors to the National Marrow Donor Program.

Volunteers will complete a registration form and provide a cheek swab to submit to an international database.

The project is of special interest to coach Bob Stoops, who frequently visits children stricken with cancer.

According to a press release by the NMDP, more than 10,000 Americans each year are stricken with life-threatening diseases that can only be treated with a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor. Only 30 percent of patients in need of a marrow or blood cell transplant find a donor in their family. The other 70 percent can turn to the NMDP to search for an unrelated donor or cord blood unit.

Patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphomas or other blood cancers make up approximately 72 percent of transplants facilitated by the NMDP.

Allgood out: Sophomore tight end Ryan Allgood, a Sooner walk-on from Grove, had to quit football last week due to irreparable damage to two discs in his lower back.

Allgood's father said his son was devastated by the results of an MRI that showed the extent of the injury.

Allgood had made significant gains during the summer and had increased his weight to 257 pounds. Ron Allgood said his son may be able to remain with the team in a peripheral capacity but the family hadn't made that determination yet.

Too bad for Allgood. It sucks to finally realize a dream thru hard work, only to have it taken away by uncontrollable circumstances. I hope he stays in school and maybe help coach a little.
