Sooners rank fourth in AP poll

NORMAN — Oklahoma was No. 4 in the Associated Press preseason football poll released Saturday. A feather in Bob Stoops' visor?

More like a feather that makes the OU coach sneeze.

"I have no idea what we are. It doesn't matter," he said after Saturday's scrimmage. "You gotta win. It's simple. We're working on that in practice. That's all I can do something about."

For practical purposes, Stoops has a better idea — delay the first set of polls.

"Probably four or five weeks in, the first of October, everybody's played some and had a chance to see some people," he said. "Then start making some assessments. But that won't happen."

As Stoops likes to say, early polls help provide coffee-shop talk while filling newspaper space. He's right in that regard — OU's preseason ranking makes it worth pointing out that they've been ranked in the AP top five a total of 353 weeks, or more than any other program.

Of course, what ultimately matters is that OU has finished the season No. 1 in the poll seven times.
