Broyles' time is finally near

NORMAN — Imagine having tickets to a Broadway show for two years, and opening night is now just over a week away.

That could describe how some Oklahoma football fans feel about getting to finally see what Ryan Broyles can do in the Sooners' opener against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Aug. 30.

The only ones who have seen what Broyles can do are the ones behind the curtain, his castmates who rave about his ability in rehearsal.

"Every day you come in it seems like he's got some highlight and everyone rewinds it about four times," OU quarterback Sam Bradford said. "It's like, 'Did he just do that?' I mean, he's got some unreal moves. He's real quick, real shifty. He keeps playing like this, he's going to be a great player."

Said head coach Bob Stoops, "Ryan Broyles has been impressive."

Broyles has not played a down at OU yet, but he has been one of the team's most chronicled players:

At Norman High School, Broyles was All-State and All-American as a senior, grabbing 44 receptions for 908 yards and eight touchdowns, and rushing for 345 yards and 12 more TDs. On defense, he had 73 tackles and six interceptions in 2006.

During the recruiting process, he committed to Oklahoma State, then switched to OU. He re-committed to OSU the day before signing day, then flip-flopped back to the Sooners on signing day.

He had made an impression with his athletic ability during training camp as a true freshman and was actually on the depth chart at inside receiver prior to last year's season-opener. But Broyles was arrested on the Friday night before the game on a complaint of stealing gasoline from a Norman convenience store. He was caught by Norman Police in possession of a key to the gas pump and override codes. He pleaded no contest and was a suspended for the 2007 season.

He was again wowing teammates and coaches during spring practice when he sustained a broken collarbone and missed the Red/White Game.

"We thought last year early he had a chance to get on the field but had a situation, and as always, nobody's bigger than our program. You make a mistake, you don't play," said offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. "Unfortunately in spring, he broke a collarbone. That was a little disappointing, because you want him to get the experience."

At OU's open practice Monday, Broyles worked with returning starters and seniors Juaquin Iglesias and Manuel Johnson in the Sooners' three-receiver sets. Stoops compared him to former OU All-American Mark Clayton because of his shiftiness and sudden jukes.

"He appears to have just some natural instincts, very quick, very sudden," Wilson said. "If he continues to progress, you'd like think he'll have a fair role. Whether it becomes super large, it'll play out. But he definitely has the skill level to play at a high level. He's a good player."

Seems a shame that most won't be able to watch since the only TV is pay per view.

Your remarks are futile....OSU wanted this kid just as bad, if not worse, than OU. Could easily be catching balls for the Pokes...and they might have even played him in '07 w/ little panalty for his actions...who knows.
