Right now, Brandon Walker is focused on being the next Davin Joseph, Greg Roberts or J.D. Roberts. The next great guard in Oklahoma football history.

But at one time, he had designs on being the next Thomas Hearns, Joe Louis or Sugar Ray Robinson. The next great boxer from Detroit.

"My dad was a boxer, so my first sport was boxing," Walker said. "I started training when I was 10. I was pretty good, but I quit when I was 16 and I took on football full-time."

If Dad helped Walker find his first passion, Mom nurtured everything else.

"My biggest influence growing up was my mom," Walker said. "I saw how she worked so hard to try to take care of me and my sister. She influenced me that if she could do it, I could do it."

Walker's determination, combined with a love of competition, got him to Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. There, he fell under another influence.

"Devin Thomas, who went to Michigan State and plays now for the Washington Redskins, became my best friend," Walker said. "We kept each other going, pushed each other through it. We still talk during the season, see how everything's going."
