Reaching out to those in need

Gerald McCoy

Gerald McCoy embraces his celebrity as an OU football player. What better way to reach kids than to show them how to dream?

"I've got to lead by example," McCoy said. "Kids say, 'Well, look at Gerald. He's doing this, he's doing that and he can still do what he can for his team.' So I figure if I lead by example, the kids will see it and they'll start doing the same thing."

McCoy wants to succeed. He's disturbed about the Sooners' performance in the Fiesta Bowl, and a national title would be a perfect remedy. The former national defensive player of the year at Oklahoma City Southeast may be poised for a breakout season.

His big dream is to some day operate the Gerald Keith McCoy Community Center.

"I think I get it from my father," he said. "When I was a kid, we'd go to the community center and we'd be leaving and all the kids would be like, 'Hey G.K.', and he'd go inside and get all my friends and take us to McDonald's. If he sees somebody in need, he'll do whatever he can and give all he can to help. That's just him, and I just grew up around it."
