A daddy's boy and proud of it

Keenan Clayton

Before football or anything else in Keenan Clayton's life, there was his dad.

"A huge influence on me," said Clayton, OU's junior starting linebacker from Sulphur Springs, Texas. "If it wasn't for my dad, I probably wouldn't be here today. He taught me right from wrong from the beginning, when I was 2 or 3 years old.

"Me and my dad, we're like brothers."

They did everything together, from detailing cars to logging hours at the Sulphur Springs Livestock and Dairy Auction. Well, almost everything.

"My dad went to a 1A high school," Clayton said. "They didn't have a football team. He played track and basketball."

For football, Clayton relied on his cousins and a neighborhood stud named Damione Lewis, who would go on to star at the University of Miami before turning pro.

"They all used to rough me up," Clayton said.

Now, it's the Sooners who get their licks in. And when it's time for some encouragement, Clayton heads home.

"That's exciting to me, being around my family," he said, "especially my dad."
